Soldering and Testing - Essex ?

All - A numpty needs some help so please be gentler with me ....

I have a pair of Rogers JR149's just sitting in my office waiting for me to fix them. I don't want to ebay them !

One has a problem that can only be a bad bass driver or dodgy component in cross-over (sound break up on bass heavy music). But in attempting to swap components to see if the problem follows to the other speaker I have now got some broken wires/connectors on the bass drivers.

So having proved myself to be ham-fisted with poor soldering skills i'm looking for a local resource who could re-solder/connect things and then prove the failing component - which I can then fix under my own steam (I hope).

So, i'm based in Essex near Stansted Airport and I'm reluctant to ask a local HiFi dealer so, any ideas where I can go (keep it clean) with this problem ?

Colin - I can only find Sevenoaks in Bishops Stortford and Armour. I know the former well and don't think they'd take this on but I don't know Armour - is that where Ken is ?

Apart from that, yes, i will learn how to solder properly so thanks for the link. That's less of a concern TBH, its the fault finding.

I have been searching and found London Sound (http://www.londonsound.org/) and Wembley Speakers both seem to be in dire need of a web designer :) but nonetheless are established businesses - ive left them emails and await a response. I travel to North London occassionally so this might work.

I know Mike Solomons who runs London Sound. He's a nice enough guy, but has charged me monstrous prices for work I've not been happy with.

Your speakers don't sound like a lot of work is needed. Simple stuff I'd say. A couple of hours max should see it all done.

I've seen the reviews of sw1x products and their website say they can fix/restore too. They are 15mins away so hopefully the fix is cheap as I also reckon a few hours should sort it. If I need a new bass unit or new crossover then falcon will supply and I can fit them easily enough. Many thanks Richard

I too have a non-working 6000KI, and am watching eBay for a working 6000 going cheap that I can rip the transport out of. If I ever find one you are welcome to what's left of the carcass to salvage for parts to fix your reduced channel problem, if you think that might help? No promises of when this might happen, eBay saved search is a patient beast.
I have no need of the KI really, but it is such a lovely player that I really don't want to just chuck it.

Thank you so much John that is a really nice offer - just what forums are about in my view !

However it may not be the KI.... the thing is that i use a coax from the KI to an Audiolab MDAC and run that thru to a Cyrus PowerX - that shows the channel problem. I have since switched the MDAC output into my other amp a MF XA2 (for vinyl !) and i get the same problem. What I haven't done yet is plug phono's from the KI to the XA2 and bypass the MDAC to see if I have the same problem. If I do then its the KI at fault, if I don't then its the MDAC - which will be a shame as its out of warranty. Drat !

BTW I met Slawa of SW1X this morning at his place in Essex to handover my speakers which he's going to fix and maybe upgrade some bits. I got a demo of his 1st system comprising of digital 16bit front-end, own designed and built speakers with pre 60's paper drivers, no crossovers and that was driven by a 2watt valve amp also of his own design. This had his entry level DAC in it and it sounded fantastic to my ears - dynamic, fluid, detailed with a massive sound stage etc etc.

He has 3 demo rooms and if anyone wants a refreshing education in whats important in hifi designs then talk to Slawa. Seems to me that his DACS are something else.

I hope that you enjoy the sound of your vintage Rogers speakers now and wondered if you tried to bypass (bridge) those fuses in the cross over, which in my book are unnecessary and detrimental to the sound.

I'm liking the concept of sourcing high efficiency older drivers to drive with valve based amp. I shall have a think about that how I can do that.

Anyhow i will bridge the JR149 fuses as you suggest. They are for the office so I'm never going to drive them hard. Also I'm swapping the cables - those ones must be 25+ years old. Suggestions ? After that I can give them a cosmetic restoration next. I'll send you a PM as there's something else I'd like to explore. Best regards, Richard
