Tweeter protection

Luck me I managed to pick up a pair of Td1000 8 ohm tweeters to replace one that has blown is there any way of protecting the tweeter each speaker is being powered by a arcam alpha p8 power amp .
I like music loud but not to the point where there is distortion any tip or advice please .

The crossover in the speakers should have a capacitor that prevents low frequencies getting through to the tweeter and overloading it. But even with the capacitor in circuit you can still blow the tweeters again by ramping up the volume too high, or using a low powered amp and running it into overload distortion.

Some more details of the problem and what you are trying to achieve would help :)

Depends what blew them. But the arcam is only 50 watt so you may well have overloaded the amp and caused the tweeter to blow that way. A bigger amp, if you like it loud maybe.
course it depends on the speakers and what they are rated at, but if well over 50 w then the amp may well be the culprit

Whilst it's best not to overdrive speakers, there are ways to protect the tweeter to an extent.

Raise the crossover point. This can be detrimental to the sound, but with some speakers it can work. Rega speakers tend to feature bass/mid drivers with hard, light paper cones that can drive well into the upper mid with no problem and a highish crossover point may be OK.

Use a steeper treble filter in the crossover. This reduces the amount of damaging lower frequencies that can get through to the tweeter. But you then run into phase problems and the matching with the bass unit roll off can be affected. Treble efficiency will drop too.

Use a fuse in line. It works, but can affect the sound quality.

Use electronic protection. There are a few ways of doing this. Investigate. It's not something I've tried. Never had the need, even though I've probably built fifty pairs of speakers (and never blown a tweeter :)).

Cheers looks like I was just unlucky I am only the second owner of these speakers one of the copper joints on the front was very thin .I am using two P8 amps one to each speaker so dont think they under powered I will just have to be carefull with the volume :rolleyes::rolleyes:
just thought of another thing they have been standing in storage for 20 years at least and the guy who sold them to me did turn them up a bit to much in the demo going to fit the new tweeters and run them in properly and on the plus side I have managed to get a nos set of voice coils just need someone to replace them .
