i notice some of the guys on aos use their full names , bearing in mind that the whole world has access to this site including many with a criminal nature is it something we should be more aware of,
its in my mind today because a few metres away from my house yesterday there was an armed robbery and several weeks ago our local halifax had 3 visitors thru the roof at opening time who robbed everyone.

the same can happen on internet sites

Here neither!

Hi Phil,

I appreciate where you're coming from, but since all we ask new members for is a proper first name (people can even make one up if they want!) and some very basic location details (such as 'Basingstoke, UK', or whatever), big bad men are hardly likely to be breaking into their home and stealing all their gear...

If members choose to be even more specific than that, that's up to them. I live in a relatively small town in North Wales and have quite an unusual name; I have even described my house before, which is also rather unusual (and first did this on audio forums in 2002) and I've managed to escape the 'baddies' so far :eyebrows:

The reason we ask people to 'give a little of themselves' is to create a friendlier atmosphere on the forum and make it feel like a community of real people, not a faceless 'message board'. Think of it as moving into a new town and the locals taking an interest in you to make you feel welcome and part of their community. Would you rather that or them ignoring you and not caring less?

Anyway, we like to interact with real people here and so prefer proper names in signatures. This why we have our particular ethos, rather than referring to someone as 'Xerox 477712', 'hifinutt', 'Captain Kirk' or whatever ;)

I trust you can appreciate this and will thus fit in and enjoy yourself here

Marco.

Guys - all joking aside, Hifinutt is making a valid point - it is worth bearing in mind and being careful, identity theft is very big business.

Indeed - a d.o.b. would be a good start - when did you take yours off your profile page? :eyebrows:

I only know it was there because I remembered we share the same birthday (different years though, you old git ;) ) but it is a valid point - don't ever publish your real d.o.b. online if it can be traced back to your real name - with that info you can get a birth certificate, and from there...

I am a very private person by nature and strictly control what information about me is on the web.

The vast majority of this forum is publicly accessible, which is excellent as it enabled me to read a lot before joining. However, it's a double edged sword as there are some things I'd like to post but I won't because of this public accessibility.

People should try use the forums picture hosting facilities for dicey pics if they can so the outside can't see unless they join that is..I think Marco's pretty much stringent enough regarding letting new members in!

Hmmm... I understand where this thread originated and I fully understand what is being implied. I guess with security, we all take a chance everytime we lock up and go to work. Obviously I have no answers here, I guess it's the nature of our present day society but I think all of us should be cautious.

Of course if someone wants to break in whilst I am at home that is a different approach. My time with the British Army taught me to always be armed to the teeth.

I like to describe my stereo as being decidedly below average and generally unlistenable, in the hope that no one will break in and pinch it.

Some days when i think it sounds crap and actually is below average, i wish someone would pinch it.
