I've just bought one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131927031664?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT and wondered if I could power it with a portable charger like the batteries which they use to recharge phones . The wallwart is rated at 12V 0.5A .

Yes no problem, as long as the battery pack is rated at 500mA or higher.

Thanks mate .

Anyone got any recommendations ? Haven't got much of a clue about these things I'm afraid

Screwfix have a selection of 12v lead acid batteries of a useful size at modest prices. I have a few, they're pretty good.

When not in use, mine are on a window sill facing the sun being charged by a Maplins 12v solar panel. I have a bunch of new stock of them if you need one. Probably got a spare battery too.

Doubt would be any better than your linear supply mate. Be better getting the likes of Nick's PS if you want an improvement. You could try your car battery for a quick listen to how a battery sounds.

12 volt power packs are pretty expensive and short on the ground tbh. cheapest ones Ive seen have been the car start ones of that size but no idea if they would work. A linear might be better. Ive still got my double linear one if you need to try one.

Thanks gents , I was just wondering if this was feasible . TBH it's sounding pretty good with the Chinese linear PSU I hooked up to it last night .
Thanks for the offers Geoff and Grant , I'll probably stick with what I've got .

If it has decent regulation internally, external PSU's will have little or no effect...

Check the output of the wall wart supplied with it. If it is unregulated then you may find more like 17V or so coming out of it. In which case a 12V regulator is likely fitted internally and this will need at least 14.5-15v to operate "in regulation".

As nearly all wallwarts have gone over to SMPS circuitry in the last year or so the above is far less likely than only a year or so ago when it would have been quite a common scenario...
