What and where are they used,as I mistakenly bought a pair of British made Mullards when I should have bought ECC82. My phono stage uses a pair of 12AX7 and 12AU7 and I bought a pair of Mullard 1964 ECC83 and they have improved it no end, the ones I removed were a Marshall branded 12AX7 and a Fender ECC83. I don't know what ECC81 are used for and may just hold onto them as an investment if they sought after.

ECC81 is a mid gain valve, against the '82 low gain and '83 high gain.
Can be used as driver stage or input stage for power amp, or gain stage for a preamp.
I used one a the 2nd valve in an all valve phono stage.

They are commonly used and are pin for pin compatible with ECC83 and 82 but different in characteristics. Higher current and greater transconductance than 83 but lower mu.
I have Mullard mil spec ECC81's available NOS.

Thanks Jez, but I'm not looking to buy but bought a pair mistakenly when I needed ECC82 which I now have.
