------------------------

Hi all.

A few days ago I received the new ALLO Audio music streamer and amplifier.

Let's unbox :)

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/336/32161106800_56c546121b_b.jpg

As you can see, very nicely boxed.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/355/32499260056_2352019811_b.jpg

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/441/31728234863_3c5a53315a_b.jpg

I have been using the IQAudio DAC+ for quite some time now and find it really quite amazing. As you know the IQAudio DAC+ uses the Rasperry Pi SBC (Single Board Computer). The new ALLO unit also uses an SBC but in this case it's a different build construction to the RPi.

The ALLO SBC is called 'Sparky'.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/406/32499363906_1263bc7b4f_b.jpg

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/347/32387860182_baf50e1ce6_b.jpg

As you can see, it's quite similar in looks to an RPi board.

The thing that makes the ALLO audio streamer different to the IQAudio is the re-clocker board called the 'KALI' which irons out any jitter. This is a HAT board of which fits on top of the Sparky SBC.

You also power through the KALI and not through the SBC.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/691/32417734861_33daa9ab65_b.jpg

Here are some specs:

The basic design includes FPGA based FIFO board
I2S input: 44.1 KHz, 48 KHz, 88.2 KHz, 96 KHz, 176.4 KHz, 192 KHz - 16bit, 24bit or 32bit
I2S output: 44.1 KHz, 48 KHz, 88.2 KHz, 96 KHz, 176.4 KHz, 192 KHz - 16bit, 24bit or 32bit
FIFO Memory: 4MB SRAM
Can be use with external Crystal Oscillators for MCLK or upgraded to a higher quality, multi-frequency clock that comes with automatic Fs switching and better performance
LED indicators (Power, Full, Lock, Empty, Sample Rate, Mclk)
DC power supply: (5V/3A) with Filter circuits
Multi-frequency output capability to support the full I2S working range from 44.1 KHz to 196 K
Automatically switching frequencies according to the input I2S signals
Extremely fast and very low propagation delay Flip-Flops are added on I2s signals output from FPGA, for synchronization with MCLK before sending to DAC
Ultra-low-noise voltage regulators for optimal audio performance
Integrated EEPROM for automatic configuration (with write-protection)

Then on top of that comes the 'PIANO' and in this case v2.1. The Piano board is the DAC and is where you will find the audio outputs.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/264/31728414193_55534e02df_b.jpg

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/353/32387891682_1743796ec2_b.jpg

You will probably notice that it has x4 outputs. Two outputs are for stereo out, and the other two outputs are for a sub-woofer stereo out.

Here are some specs:

Dedicated Two no’s of 384 kHz/32bit high-quality DAC PCM5142 for best sound quality
Available with different output connectors: 4 x RCA
DAC SNR is 112dB
DAC THD+N @ - 1dBFS are –93dB
Full Scale Output of DAC is 2.1Vrms
Dynamic Range of DAC is 112dB
Sampling Frequency ranges from 8 kHz to 384 kHz
Ultra-low-noise voltage regulators for optimal audio performance
Integrated EEPROM for automatic configuration (with write-protection)

The fun doesn't stop there either... Yup, you have guessed it, there is another board to go.

The next board that fits on top is of course the amplifier. The amplifier is called 'VOLT'.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/491/31728389853_eb346abe7f_b.jpg

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/618/32540498795_c39560f6b3_b.jpg

Here are some specs:

This class D amplifier goes up to 2 x 50W Max
The components used are specifically designed for high end audio devices (Würth Inductor, TI chipset, film capacitors and ± 1% thin film resistors)
VOLT AMP boasts 4 output filters, 4 EMI Snubbers, 4 bootstrap capacitors and gain setting components And Additional Provision for stepped attenuator volume control

Technical Specifications
Chipset: TPA3118D2
Output: 2 x 50W (Max) into a 4 to 8-Ω BTL Load
Class D Operation: 90% POWER EFFICIENCY
SNR: 102dB
Supply Voltage: UP TO 24V DC
Board Size: LWH = 58mm* 86.75mm * 32.06mm
Temp Range: -40°C to 85°C Ambient

ALLO have really gone to town on this design as a system in it's entirety because there is one more board to go. The PSU for the VOLT called the CAPACITANCE MULTILPIER

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/435/31728216043_7e91f233d4_b.jpg

Some specs here:

Max Vin (30v)
Min Vin (6v)
Dropout voltage is trim pot selectable from 0-3V (dropout voltage should be always higher than ripple / noise of PSU)
Factory default is 0.5V
Power dissipation is dropout Voltage x A used = W of heat
PSRR of 70db
This circuit is very suitable for class A and class D amplifiers or even to feed clean power to your SBCs

So altogether we have a superb little system here and I have to say it really does sound very nice indeed. The system also comes with two acryllic platforms for assembly too.

As for ease of assembly it's really very easy and only takes 5 minutes.

Here are some pics of the assembly process.

So, lets get on with how this sounds. (No Veils or blankets were used in this review) :)

I am reviewing this only two days in to hearing it for the first time using the SPARKY, KALI and Piano 2.1 boards in comparison to the RPI 2 and the IQAudio DAC+. Not a long time in I know but it's long enough to give you something to think about. Also, I am not using the supplied wallwart PSU as I use the SBooster BOBW PSU which is great because it comes with a selection of connectors. So before we start I have to say that at this moment in time there are still some software bugs that need to be ironed out. But this is quite understandable. The hardware however is solid.

This system uses MAX2PLAY for it's user platform and can be used with Squeezelite, Shareport (Airplay) as it's user interfaces. In this case I'm using Squeezelite as I have a USB drive connected and not a NAS box system.

The Sound:
The first thing I noticed was the amount of information coming through. Lots of detail which I have to confess I knew was there but it's never shown itself as clearly before now if you know what I mean. Because of this the stage is wider and deeper with lots of air. You can track instruments much easier.

The second thing I noticed was the bass. From when my dub track kicked in it made me smile. This is proper bass. Listening to lots of different tracks from different genre's the bass comes through easier with more definition and focus creating a much more realistic mid-range fluidiy.

From this moment in testing and in comparison to the IQAudio/RPi combo I think the ALLO most certainly comes out the most focused. But... the IQAudio does have a certain something which is more of a relaxed presentation. These are early days and I will be returning to the IQAudio/RPi system at a later date.

Now let's power up the VOLT!

The Volt has up to 50wpc output which is really quite enough for most.

I hooked up my 15" Tannoy Monitor Golds and awaywaywaywego!

Very impressive... for something that's so small this has to be the best digital amp I've heard. My speakers are not hard to power, far from it. So this may vary with different speakers but I have to say I'm very impressed indeed.

I'm going to keep this review open so I can keep on updating on how this opens up over the next few months so stay tuned.

Excellent post, Jo, and great pics! And all interesting stuff

It's also good to see all the 'bits' that Andre sells fully assembled, explained and illustrated, as part of the problem was that folks didn't really understand what it was he was selling!

All I'd add is who makes all this stuff, the details of which can be found here: http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?46117-ALLO-Audio-Hardware

I look forward to finding out what your think of the system once you settle in with it more

nicely done Jo. I wanted to run mine with moode, but so far its not working lol. Never mind, Andre is still to get back to me on the is version which is needed. I didnt want to learn a new system as i Wont be so able to hear the differences down to the hardware if I do. I never got the boxes either, and no sd card.

I've just seen this thread and, coincidentally, received a Kali and Piano Dac from Allo.com this morning. Hence I've paid full whack! No regrets however, as my first impressions are that the sound is very good: To begin with, I put the Kali with the RPi and Mamboberry LS dac that I've been using with the Moode player. It played straight off, and the sound was fuller and more realistic with the Kali in place. The one odd thing was that the pause control now caused the last second or so of playback to go onto constant repeat.
Kali plus Piano Dac gave similarly good sound. (I haven't yet really compared the Piano with the LS Dac though). The pause oddity was still present.
I do think that Allo should provide a bit of documentation with the products. Both the Kali and the Piano have tiny switches which are covered in protective film. The film has to be removed and the switches set for 'HAT' and, in the case of the Piano, for 'RPi compatability' if the Rpi is being used. Anyone who didn't know about this could have a frustrating time. Also, the Piano Dac arrived with standoffs for mounting, but the Kali didn't.
So I'm happy so far, and will post again after more listening and experimentation.

That's great! - Yep, it's certainly a very nice sounding bit of kit.

I also think improvements in the documentation would be good too. I've not had the repeating problem you have had though.

Hi Jo.

I've fiddled with some of the Moode settings, and the player will now pause after three or four 1-second repetitions! Very strange, presumably to do with the interaction between Kali and Moode software.

Mine has arrived and 5 hours later I'm about ready to send it back, I can only get AirPlay to work but no joy at all playing from usb, nas, or radio stations.

Max2play ( paid for full license ) has to be the biggest pile of over complicated software ever written!

Ympd player won't connect, Ampache doesn't work, gives me about 15 errors after install, my usb stick doesn't show up.

I've tried MoOde but the Sparky doesn't even show up after rebooting.

Anything else I can use other than max2play, I remember trying it before and thought it was crap, my opinion hasn't changed lol.

Well I managed to get it running woo hoo!

Only thing I've noticed is that it makes my HD-Plex Linear PSU run very hot?

I've not fitted the Volt amp section yet as it's plugged into my main system amp.

I'll have more time to play with it over the weekend, but to be honest I don't like Logitech Media Server software which Max2play uses. I much prefer MoOde but it just doesn't work with the Sparky ( RPi clone ) box?

I also didn't fit the PSU regulator, should I have? Didn't have any instructions so left it off and just ran the box with the Kali Reclocker and the Piano 2.1 DAC fitted.

You're right, the original HDPlex PSU that I have is only 2 amp, looks like I'll be giving the Sparky setup a quick listen, write up then sell it as I'm not spending more cash on another PSU.

Just thought I'd see if it was better then the Pi and IQAUDIO DAC, but for me running it via Max2play and LMS is a non starter, far too complicated to get going and I'm pretty computer savvy and have used LMS before but it still took me a few hours to get going.

The Kali and Piano DAC don't fit my Pi either as it's an older version, so I can't swap them over and try it on my Pi.

mikeyb
08-10-2016, 10:14
More hair pulling this morning, any of the 'players' I use through LMS keep dropping out I have to reselect renderer again, but then I can't control the music and have to go into LMS be setting page to stop the music.

I'm going to try and see if it will run Volumio and if that fails then I give up. My Pi using MoOde runs without issue and has done for months but so far trying to run the Vanaplayer using LMS is a nightmare.

jonners
08-10-2016, 11:31
I would recommend getting a RPi that you can use with the Kali and Piano running Moode, and giving up on Sparky. The sound is really very good. I'm running mine off a 1A TPS7A4700 regulator so a 2A supply ought to be OK.

struth
08-10-2016, 11:50
Rpi 2 will run on 2 amps or so. rpi3 needs 3 amps. I know a few guys have used the kali and piano on a rpi2 using moode or volumio. So its maybe your best bet Mike. An rpi2b is good n cheap. Might need a new box made up but you could use the sparky panels initially. The other board is to multiply the voltage from the 5v supply to the 19v for the amp board by way. Glad youve got it to work

Here's my initial thoughts/feelings about this system/components.

Andre (Audio Hdwr) offered that I could test/review the following:
Piano Hi-Fi DAC 2.1
Volt AMP
KALI Reclocker

Not a full-blown VANA system but since I already have a spare Raspberry Pi 2 Model B with an IQaudIO DAC+ installed it would be an interesting comparison.

So using that as a base I removed the IQaudIO DAC+ and installed the Piano Hi-Fi DAC 2.1. Dead simple - fits onto the Raspberry PI as per the IQaudIO DAC+ and so good to go - fingers crossed.

I have been using Squeezebox Server and a Squeezebox Classic for years now so that is the environment I am testing in – I don’t stream from the internet so won’t be looking at that side of things.

The Raspberry PI is running Max2Play v2.37 – I’ve been using that for about a year or so now since it offers a good web interface to control the PI and it’s installed software (Squeezebox Server and SqueezePlug) plus it has specific extensions/packages for the IQaudIO DAC.

After rebooting the PI I checked the IQaudIO settings in Max2Play to specify the DAC I’m using – well since the Piano Hi-Fi DAC 2.1 isn’t actually an IQaudIO product I guessed/crossed fingers that the setting of IQaudio Pi-DAC+ would work.

And it did :) Fired up the system, switched on the amp and selected the Raspberry Pi as the input – went to the iPad and started iPeng (SqueezeBox control app) to browse some music on the Raspberry Pi. I’ve got a playlist that I use to test whenever I change something in the system and chose that. No problem – all worked as expected, DAC recognised and working as expected.

Initial impressions are very good – usually everything goes through an Audiocom modified Squeezebox Classic into an M2Tech Young DAC. Using the Pi/Piano Hi-Fi DAC 2.1 the bass has less impact and the soundstage is not quite so wide but for something that costs significantly less than my usual system it does not disgrace itself. If I was just beginning to get into the world of digital/streaming music, then I would have been more than satisfied with what I was hearing and very happy with my system.

One thing I noticed is that the RCA binding posts and not quite as robust as those used on the IQaudIO DAC. The Piano Hi-Fi DAC 2.1 uses a single post for each cable whilst the IQaudIO DAC uses a double unit. When I was taking the connects off the Piano DAC I noticed that there was a degree of movement/flex as I pulled the connect off – maybe I’m a bit ‘rough’ with the connect but might be worth bearing in mind when changing cables/connecting the system.

The next stage is to install the KALI Reclocker to see what impact that has on the system – but I need a suitable power supply for the KALI and am waiting for Andre to get back to see if the power supplies I have lying around are suitable.

Glad youve got it to work
I've ditched the Sparky and fitted the Reclocker, Piano 2.1 DAC and Volt amp to my second Pi system in the computer room and it's sounds excellent.

I've just gone back to my original Pi setup in the living room so I can keep using my HD-Plex linear PSU on it as it's an older Pi that won't take the Reclocker etc.

If I pick up another linear PSU to suit the newer Pi that needs 5v3a to run the Reclocker etc I'll move that one into the main setup.

My other option is to try Volumio as they have a distro for the Sparky, but that's for another day.

5v 3a PSU is what you need I think as that's what came with mine. You also need a 19v PSU for the Volt if used or for the Capacitor board ( I think that's what it's called lol ) that then plugs into the Volt.

Both PSUs at the same time, 5v powered first then the 19v one, and in reverse when powering off.

My bass was a little light and recessed as well, but I SSH'd into the Pi and set the alsamixer to -4.50db which was I think must be near 100 on the scale as next notch up was into the red, as it was originally way down at the bottom of the scale, as soon as I did that, oh boy bass was back big time, made me jump lol

Thanks for this - just been trying this out and changing the alsamixer setting 'Playback [dB gain:]' from -6.00 to 0.00 and the bass is back with a vengeance. Very nice - all sounding good. And I've still to try the KALI Reclocker in the system.

Interestingly (possibly) I've tried playing with the alsamixer setting 'PCM' which in my system was set to around '80' I think - increasing this to '87' or '88' has a similar effect to boosting the 'Playback [dB gain:]'. Not sure which is the correct/proper thing to do but may be worth experimenting with.

Either way enjoying what I'm listening to :)

Finally got around to putting all the pieces together today – and I have to say I’m very impressed with the system.

Took me a while to find some suitable power supplies – ended up with this one:

LINDY Multi Country Switching AC Adapter - 5V DC, 3A, 2.5mm Inner / 5.5mm Outer DC Jack
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005NF4C7O/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

for the KALI Reclocker and this one:

19V 3.42A 5.5x2.5mm POWER CHARGER REPLACEMENT
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01GHRU554/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

for the Volt Amp.

Andre had arranged to have a 2.5mm to 3.0mm adapter included in the kit for the Volt Amp so everything went together no problem.

Tried Moode 2.7 first – never really tried this before but thought it would be a change and was curious to see how it performed. Installed and booted up fine and after a bit of tinkering, hooking up to my NAS and the like started to have a listen. All sounded fine for a couple of tracks – until I tried to pause a track. Then I had the same problem that jonners was experiencing – the last second or so of the track is repeated before pausing. After checking out the thread relating to this and not wanting to bother Andre with replacing the unit (DAC I guess) I switched to using Max2Play instead.

My main system is based around SqueezeBox so am familiar with this and have a number of apps that I can use to control the server. So installed Max2Play (version 2.37 now), set up a mount point to the NAS, got SqueezeBox Server to do a full scan and away we go.

Brilliant – sounds better than I expected. For a system with such a small footprint it really does exceed expectations – the quality is excellent. I’m running this into a set of Q Acoustics 2010i speakers and the bass/tone/seperation is really good – only running at low volume at the moment (don’t want to annoy the neighbours) but the detail is very good.

I’ll try this in my main system later this week to see how it fairs but I’m guessing it’ll sound excellent.

Hi Dave.

Glad you are finding it good. It is a superb bit of kit. The KALI really does make the difference with the dac.

I am now running mine with the RPI 2 running Moode. It's really quite stunning. I just can't get on the LMS so Moode is better for me.

The Volt amp is a superb little thing too... I was so very surpised and at 50wpc it's flexible for a good percentage of speakers.

Think I'll be sticking with LMS - using Orange Squeeze on an Android tablet to control the playback or iPeng on an iPad.

yes you will see great improvement.
KALI will sync the clocks of the RPI and the DAC, no info lost, better sound quality.

Via coax? That suggests SPDIF, an output which the RPi doesn't have. Or are you using USB? To use the Kali you would have to route the I2S signals from Kali into the DAC. There's no SPDIF or USB out from Kali.

Sorry, forgot to include that I'm using the HifiBerry Digi+ board which fits onto the RPi2 board and has optical/coax outputs. I've read on the Allo website that for the Kali to work with a DAC other than the Piano, it needs to be a slave DAC. How can one find this out?

The Digi+ works in master mode and is not compatible with Kali. There's some discussion of the master/slave issue on the HiFiBerry forum.

Good moaning, I have had my 'Allo 'Allo DAC running for a couple of days now.

Why buy it?
I have been running a Pi2 + IQAudio DAC+ for the last year or so and have been optimising the 5V supply for it over the last few weeks. A bit of research and some pcb tracing shows that the supply arrangements are: 5V from the Pi is fed to an on board LDO which supplies 3V3 to the analogue side of the DAC, the Pi's 3V3 supply (from a switching reg) supplies the digital side of the DAC. Comments on DIYAudio claim the IQ DAC+ has some design deficiencies. I am not sure if this is what they mean. In comparison the Piano 2.1 DAC has separate on board LDOs for the digital and analogue supply pins and it gets its feed from the KALI, so avoids the switching reg in the Pi.
In addition there is the well known problem of the Pi clock not being a multiple of 44.1Khz so they need to do some manipulation of the clock to get near to the right frequency. The KALI sorts this and also removes the alleged high levels of jitter on the I2S output.
Conclusion: lower jitter and better supplies ough to provide much better sound and all the review seem to back this up.

Listening session 1:
Swapped the IQ DAC+ for the Piano 2.1. PS still fed from the Pi2 and still using Moode 2.3 (yes, I know it's over a year old). The Piano worked exactly the same and no settings needed to be changed (hardware vol and Low latency IIR with de-emphasis filter).
Initial impression, with low level listening, was of a bit more detail and control over the DAC+.
I left is playing for several hours and then listened again. Same impression.

Listening session 2:
As everyone else was out I was able to enjoy some more enthusiastic replay levels :-)
1st off tried the Piano without the KALI. Similar impression to the 1st session but also noticed a lack of dynamics and a somewhat flat and narrow soundstage compared to what I was used to with the DAC+. Had a good blast for 1/2 an hour then decided it was time for the "gamechanger".
With great expectation I fired up the Pi2/KALI/Piano2.1 stack, powered via the KALI from the same external 5V supply.
Initial impression was that is was a bit cleaner and tidier sounding than without the KALI. BUT... the same lack of dynamics and feeble soundstage remained.

I then went back to Pi2 & DAC+. Better is every way! The music is back in my living room!
The simple fact is that the IQAudio DAC just makes me want to listen louder and longer, and to a wider range of music.

I get exactly the opposite between IQAudio DAC and the Piano/Kali combo using MoOde, on the Piano/Kali I get about 30-40% more width/soundstage and better cleaner bass which results in more slam/kick

Did you make sure the alsamixer was set right on both setups, I know on mine that if I reboot or switch dacs I need to go back in via SSH and set the Digital output on the Piano/Kali to my preferred gain, currently set at -2.0 db on the digital setting, both analog levels set at max.

Yes, I just checked the settings in Alsamixer. Both analogue volumes are at max and digital is the same as the setting on the controller (because I use the digital hardware volume control).

I suspect the power supply routing is the issue. I notice some inductors on the Allo Allo pcbs, I might try bypassing these.
I also might try the KALI with the IQ DAC - this will need the 3V3 supply rerouting through from the Pi or somewhere.

I don't use the volume control within MoOde as this in turn reduces the Digital scale. I use hardware too but use the amp to control the volume with the digital scale set at -2 and I don't change this at all. On your system does changing the volume not cancel/change the digital settings?

It used to be that 86 was preferred for the IQAUDIO DAC in MoOde but Tim changed this to be 100 (0db) I believe, but 0db on my system is a bit rough on treble hence the -2db setting.

I always thought if using hardware volume you used an external amp to control the volume as the hardware setting should be set and not moved once you find a preferred setting?

What software are you using?

Starterman
10-11-2016, 17:28
The hardware volume is done inside the DAC chip. The Alsamixer digtial volume varies as the controller (an iPhone in my case) is varied - or vice versa, it's possible to change the setting in Alsamixer and iPhone "follows" it.
The 0dB thing was fixed within the kernels used by Moode IIUC.

When I power down and back up the digital volume stays at the same setting. This workes exactly the same for the Allo units as for the IQ. I believe I am comparing apples with apples here.

Ok fair enough doesn't work that way on mine, the digital scale must remain at our near 0db or it just sounds flat and lifeless.

If I used my iPad to control volume it took over and reverted MoOde back to software volume so it required changing back again to hardware and putting it back to 0db.

If I use volume control on the MoOde web page that again affects the hardware alsamixer settings and needs resetting. I always thought the alsamixer settings were set then there was no need to change them again, hence my use of amp to control the volume?

If I use my smartphone and say Bubble uPnP it can't change the volume as I have it set not to because it does exactly the same, it overrides the alsamixer setting and again needs be set back at 0db ( -2 in my case) on the digital scale.

Be great if I could control volume via my smartphone or iPad, save walking over to the amp lol but as it is I can't as it doesn't work that way for me without altering the alsamixer digital settings [emoji6]

Yip I have the Allo Piano DAC set at 98 (-2db) and I don't change it.

Originally on the IQAUDIO DAC Tim had MoOde set to 0db at 86, but was changed to 100 in a later version of MoOde.

I'm confused by the other posts saying that they use hardware volume control as I thought once set it was meant to be fixed and then use an external volume control, I've just changed my Bubble settings to use the phone volume control and although it worked it just moved the alsamixer setting which, as far as I thought shouldn't be changed once set at optimum for your system, ie: 96 on yours Grant and 98 on mine.

The Piano/Kali setup on mine is belting out some Porcupine Tree and I type and it's rocking very nicely indeed [emoji6]

For the IQ DAC+ to be master it would need a clock on board. I cannot see any evidence of one, so I think it operates in slave mode.

Yes I will try the KALI again. I need to figure out how the 2 inductors on the KALI board are connected. If one or both are in series with any analogue supply (to the DAC) they will probably end up being shorted.

Further listening to the Pi & Piano today and I removed the short across the inductor. Sounded better without it!
Then added the KALI and it sounded better still.
Now the strange thing is that 1/2 hour into the listening sesh the sound suddenly opened up. WTH is going on here - I really don't want to believe in running-in of components, but?!

Anyway, I am now very happy wih the Allo Allo stuff.
Next step is to get my filters programmed iinto purepath and see what benefits can be had from getting rid of my analogue (discrete) active crossover.

Hi Andre.

I have wondered if the 2.1 could be modded (via hardware or software) to use both dacs monolithically instead of having one dac chip dormant if a sub isn't used?

Just a little thought.. :)

Oh how annoying, I ordered mine because I thought this offer was fully subscribed
It brings to mind the old saying "If you don't ask you don't get".

On the subject of modding, it would be interesting if you could post up the power supply arrangements. i.e. the power flow from KALI via the 2 onboard inductors and to the Piano. I can understand the value of isolating different parts from noise but sometimes low impedance gives a better sound (those inductors have a DCR of 2.4 Ohms) especially for those of us using a nice low noise linear 5V supply.

PS: I am Dave S on DIYAudio, so keen to use the DSP filters built into the 5142!

I also might try the KALI with the IQ DAC - this will need the 3V3 supply rerouting through from the Pi or somewhere.

Have you tried this Dave? I'm thinking of having a go myself, running a 3v3 regulator off the Kali 5v header to supply the DAC. Question is, where to connect the 3v3 to the DAC? My inclination is to go to pins 1 and 17 on the IQ header, what do you think?

hello ,
please see replies here:

Starterman:
Kali and and Piano have on board individual filter circuit for the main 5v input and ultra low noise and high pssr LDOs.

Balck Adder:
We can control L&R as well as sub RCA connectors by software ... i can show you how.

Plays nicely, sounds very good with Volumio. I'll test it in the main system next.
I discovered that pins 1 and 17 were already joined on the DAC, so I just connected the 3v3 to pin 1.

I have a rpi2 and I'm very interested in the Piano 2.1 and Kali combi.

Is it possible to feed power to the pi with a different powersupply then the Piano 2.1 + Kali?
Or is it going to backpower?
I power my pi now with Battery supply (as an UPS) and would like to feed the Piano+Kali combi with a linear power supply.
Is that possible?

Also, does someone have experience with shipping costs to Asia (Bangkok to be precise) ?

There should be no problem using a linear supply into the Kali for the DAC and Pi.

If you want to power the Pi separately then you will need to ensure there is no power connections between it and the DAC/Kali but I can see no real benefit of such an approach.

The Allo products are primarily shipped from India (see their main site - allo.com ) so you will need to work out your shipping and taxes via that site.

Thanks for your reply. The benefit would be that a linear PSU will have a cleaner, and thus better sounding, supply.
Because a clean supply is a good basis for DAC and Kali, I would like to feed it with linear power supply.
It unfortunately will give me problems when we have a power cut (which happens quite often here).
That's why I would like to supply the pi itself with the little bit more noisier, but powersafe, battery-supply (UPS).
Best of both worlds I would like to think. You think that's possible?

Ok I will check the site again, thank you Mel

It's certainly possible to power the Pi separately. You just have to remove the jumper that's near one of the corners of the Kali, next to the pwr led. That will stop the Kali supplying power to the Pi.

Daft hobby!...

I find it usually takes around half an hour to get used to a new setup, and then everything seems to snap into focus. Thus, first impressions can be misleading, need a bit of time. :)

Having been using my original HiFiBerry DAC for a few years I have decided that the time has come for a change this has been prompted by a couple of things:

-Since I became a born again vinyl listener I find the 'old' HiFi Berrry quite difficult to listen to.

-There seems to have been a lot of improvement in this area particularly in the area of master clocks and reclocking (Kali and Audiophonics V2 & V3)

Because of the nature of these things I will have to take a punt on one or other based on online reviews I have decided to go for the Kali+Piano option over the Audiophonics, although I do regret the Piano DAC RCA connectors not having securing nuts like the Audiphonics as this would make fitting either a pre-made or home-made case easier. I am always slightly afraid of straining the connections on the PCB when I fit my interconnects!

The advantages, as I see it, of the Kali set up are:

-I can try different DACs without a complete upgrade

-I don’t have to do anything about switching and it has a power supply ‘clean-up’ built in

-There is room for upgrade; I could potentially have 3 separate linear power supplies (Pi, Kali & DAC)

I currently have a 5V/3A SMPS but am waiting on The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR4tuhqPppVp-PD0q17sPEA) for his review on linear power supplies!

Question for Audiohdwr and that is whether there is still a discount available for forum members? I know I am not a big contributor to the forum but I would like to write a review comparing this to the original HiFi Berry and my turntable and if I can persuade my friend with a rather more upmarket set up to compare it to a Linn Klimax DS!

Thanks to everyone here for their feedback on this setup which has been of great help.

I think it has sonic disadvantages to power the pi through USB because you use the regulators on board.
When you power the pi through GPIO pins it skips these regulators, which should sound better, BUT it doesn't have protection for higher or lower voltages anymore!

Could you explain why, please. I'm interested to know.

Richard it looks like the boards are supplied with standoffs. Look at the Allo site and find the manuals for the boards you bought and they say what is supplied. I bought a bundle too and have just been looking on their site for technical details and links are provided just to the right of the description section.

Despite reading the Allo sites description of this item and their manual I just cannot understand what it does - can anybody explain its purpose in plain English for me.

With all the components assembled (inc. the Volt amplifier) it looks like the package needs 2 power supplies, a 5v one for the Kali/DAC/Pi and another 19v one for the Volt. However, while Allo sells a 5v supply they don't do a 19v one so what type of 19v suply is needed - just an ex laptop unit?

Or does the CAPACITANCE MULTILPIER take a feed from the 5v supply and somehow modify it for the Volt amp?

No the wallwart isn't needed if you use a 19v supply as it powers everything.

I didn't order the wallwart but it came with one anyway which was handy as I ended up not using the Volt or the Capacitance device.

Hi All,

I received a Kali (https://www.allo.com/sparky/kali-reclocker.html) + Piano 2.1 DAC (https://www.allo.com/sparky/piano-dac-2-1.html) just this morning. Initially, I used Moode 3.0 (http://moodeaudio.org)which worked quite well but AFAIKS it doesn't yet have a setting to run the two chips on the Piano DAC. So I reluctantly installed Volumio 2 on a micro SD card and powered the system up.

I'm comparing it directly (using an A/B switch) to an Audiophonics V1 es9023 DAC board with the XO (http://www.audiophonics.fr/en/diy-dac/audiophonics-i-sabre-dac-es9023-tcxo-raspberry-pi-a-b-20-i2s-p-10296.html) clock option running on a Pi2B

Music material currently is Daniel Lanois / Acadie (https://g.co/kgs/peJ9xr) streamed from a NAS and from various 320kbs Spotify files.

My initial impressions where a little disappointing in that both DACs sounded pretty much the same. I rechecked everything and noticed that I had a power supply on the KALI - AND - on the Pi which is a no-no. (I hadn't read the instructions  the good news is that the Pi survived the over powering or maybe it has some sort of protection... anyways, don't do that, only power the KALI with a good 5V/3A PSU which will in turn supply clean power to the Pi.). I had to restart the Pi several times before Volumio would load. I think that also caused some confusion on my part. Somehow, I thought that the Pi wasn't getting any power :mental:...

I'm not sure that this mistake made much of a SQ difference. With the proper power configuration it was still pretty close to the Audiophonics combo. So, I'll just let some more music through it for some hours hoping it would "warm up" a little....

And indeed, several hours later, it's becoming quite evident that the sound stage on the KALI / Piano2.1 combo has something going. It seems to be much better defined with a very "spacial" feeling to it. I'm not sure it's because of the settle in period or because I'm just getting used to the new sound(stage) ? but it is quite easy to make out.

More to come ...

Funny nick names that our Capacitance Multiplier board is getting :)
odd board ; capacitance thingy hehe

yes, the CM board filters the noise and ripple generated by the 19V power supply for the VOLT amp to negligible levels.
i just wanted to clarify that the 19V power supply feeds only the AMP... you still need a 5V PSU for the KALI.

Rupert, make sure you check the alsamixer settings by SSH into the Pi and turn the analogue outputs up to max and make sure you have the digital output at your preferred setting too. Mine is set at 0db currently. But I have previously run it at -3db.

If these are set right then you'll find a decent jump in output quality.

Ah, don't use Volumio so I'm not sure, sorry

oki, yes, that's why I switched to Volumio for this board as it has a specific setting for the Piano2.1DAC...

Continuing some more listening...

I did an amp swap (from a class-D LJM L15D with two beefy transformers) to my trusted Dada Quad 306 and also found a way to simultaneously stream high res files from iTunes over Airplay to both DAC's in order to be able to switch from one DAC to the other without any delay ...

First off, the Quad has made the sound a little more cosy, which is hard to get used to after having tasted the precision and slam of the class-D amp combined with these DAC's.

But, even in this configuration, I hold on to my first impressions. The sound of the two DACs is very similar, both have clocks but the Kali+Piano2.1 still seems to have an edge in terms of imaging. YMMV. I must stress that I am comparing a first gen. (V1 (http://www.audiophonics.fr/en/diy-dac/audiophonics-i-sabre-dac-es9023-tcxo-raspberry-pi-a-b-20-i2s-p-10296.html)) audiophonics DAC with the clock option. I had falsely stated that it was a V2 (http://www.audiophonics.fr/en/diy-dac/audiophonics-i-sabre-dac-es9023-v2-tcxo-raspberry-pi-20-a-b-i2s-p-10176.html). From what I understand the big difference between V1 and V2 is the layout of the boards and a more precise clock (2x) in the newer version.

Also, maybe my system is not resolving enough to get every little drop out of the two PCM5142 chips on the Kali / Piano2.1 combo (LJM L15D, Quad Dada 306, SC LDR pre, KEF LS50, Q Acoustics 2020i, NVA and Klotz cables). Volumio seems to have the optimal settings for the Piano2.1. AFAIKS, Moode 3.0 still needs some tweaking at the time of writing to properly drive the Piano2.1. I have a feeling that much can be done on the tweaking / software side to get the most out of these devices but that possibility also opens a door to an large, almost infinite number of options which could influence the sound in some subtle way. I don't think I want to go through it. The sound is already great to my ears ;-) and I could easily settle for it. Maybe some larger speakers one day ?

On the build side, I prefer the Audiophonics DAC. It has RCA's which can be bolted to a chassis, thus relieving the board from any stress from un / plugging cables. The Piano's RCA's would probably break off after a while if used in a chassis. But it would be easy to de-solder them and route some wires to chassis mounted RCA plugs.

Back to some tunes ;-)

Piano 2.1 with no sub connected and PI3 + Moode 3.1 with DAC set as IQ pi Dac+ (no other default changes applied)

I have just got the Allo items and intend to compare to the Audiophonics V3 DAC shortly. However, initially I notice a lack of lower bass registers. On another forum I noted what seemed like an Allo employee saying the 2.1 default setup has a an 80hz cut off on the main RCA output as this is where the configuration cuts over to the sub DAC and this could account for what I hear. Does anybody know if this is the case and how can it be changed? It appears there is an app and some pre set configurations which can be used has anybody come across these? (it seemed this was not the TI software used for the filter set up)

thanks for the great feedback.
we will soon release something new that will take care of that issue. Does that mean a custom case?

You could try the setting on Moode for the IQAudio Pi-Dac Pro. Or move to Volumio, which has the Piano 2.1 settings.

..... Also, maybe my system is not resolving enough to get every little drop out of the two PCM5142 chips on the Kali / Piano2.1 combo

Correction: in stereo 2.0 mode, only one chip is used.

Currently, the other is only active when driving a sub... but, it could be that in a near future a possibility will become available to use one for each channel (dual mono). I'm not sure though if it will be a software update or if it will need a new board to do this. Maybe Andre can elucidate on this ?

Interesting times ;-)

First off practicalities: I bought the Kali + Piano DAC (Stereo only not 2.1) which arrived with 4 male/female standoffs and 4 female/female standoffs all 12mm spacing and M3 thread. I am using a Pi 2 and for the moment they are all mounted on wooden coaster which I drilled and recessed the holes using a template from here http://www.raspberrypi-spy.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Raspberry-Pi-Mounting-Hole-Template.pdf (make sure you measure the calibration square – my first print from a browser was way out I had to print from Acrobat and turn off any auto scaling). I am not sure what I am going to do longer term I still have the issue of cables coming out 3 sides but this will do for now. My power supply is something that I turned up a Kings KSS15-050-3000 which is a 5V 3A SMPS nothing special I believe they can be picked up for around a tenner (£10).

Using the latest Volumio image I booted it up and all looked good, went to the Playback Options and switched on I2S DAC, selected Allo Piano from the drop down and saved and then restarted Volumio as prompted.

Right now we are ready to go with headphones as I share my listening room with my wife and daughter who are addicted to ‘Strictly’ and here comes my first and so far only problem! I can’t plug my headphones (AKG K550) as it clashes with the power jack so just to check everything is coming through as expected I plug in my earbuds with a smaller jack.

‘Strictly’ done I have the chance for a short audition which consists of:
• Frank Sinatra - Come Fly with me – Live at The Sands 24/192
• Joni Mitchell – River – Blue 16/44.1 CD Rip (Well it is nearly Christmas!)
• Cara Dillon – Black is the Colour – Cara Dillon 16/44.1 CD Rip
• Oscar Peterson - Hymn of Freedom – Night Train 24/96
• Buddy Holly – True Love Ways – From The Original Master Tapes 16/44.1 CD Rip

First impressions are more detail, clearer bass and more space.

With the Sinatra there was definitely a clearer impression of being in a big night club type auditorium.

On River the piano sounded far more natural as does Joni’s voice

On Black Is The Colour there are a couple of very noticeable things the first is a sound at the beginning that on my old Hifi Berry and in the car sounded like the ‘Ulla!‘ from Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds turns out to be an organ and Seth Lakeman’s backing vocal which previously had blended into the background and disappeared are now clearly those of a man contrasting with Cara’s glorious voice (sorry I saw her live last week and fell in love with her voice and now just about have the full back catalogue :)).

The Oscar Peterson Trio sound more vinyl like, I haven’t got this album on vinyl but the sound is less harsh and has the feel of ‘We Get Requests’ that I do have on vinyl – need to listen to this more.

Finally to Buddy, this is probably the best mastered CD I possess and this is the best track on it all of the instrumentation is clearer particularly the strings and what I think is a bass sax sounds wonderful.

So 1st Impressions are “Wow”. This usually means that in a couple of weeks I will like it even more. Sorry if the description of the sound is a bit lacking but I have never been that great at putting it into words.

For info I am using a UPNP set up with Asset UPnP running on a Pi 3 with a drive mounted to my NAS and controlling the set up with Bubble UPnP on Android phone and/or tablet.

Now I am thinking if it sounds that good with a cr*p power supply what would it sound like with a LPS? I have been looking at the Sbooster, Long Dog (MCRU), Russ Andrews and Teddy Pardo but they will all have to wait a while.

BTW - M3 Thread wouldn't go through holes in Pi so I used 3mm drill, twisted between my fingers, to enlarge holes slightly.

ru

ps. I have gone back to Moode 3.1 and I cannot make out any major SQ differences to Volumio.. just saying !

My offer to Andre was to review the Vana player rather than the DAC and this is still my aim.

I tend to be a technical person and SQ to me is viewed more of a different sound rather than a better or worse sound. At present I have a number of DACs ranging from Meridian, Naim, Cyrus through to a few PI dedicated ones and I like to listen to all for different reasons. Personally there is not one I dislike amongst any I have. Unless I actually compare any 2 in a controlled way then quite frankly I would honestly find it hard to name any in a blind test (with one possible exception).

The Allo reviews to date have been a bit confusing in that there are 2 DAC boards, one of which has the default TI configuration and one which has the Allo custom configuration (and no documentation says what the later is). The reviews in this link tend to give a reader a view they all relate to the same product when this is not strictly true.

I currently have the 2.1 Piano and really like the apparent wide clear soundstage BUT I currently view this as possibly the 'tweaking' a supplier can do to make a product stand out from the crowd - however a longer term listen can result in a different view.

That's where I am at present. I am sure the 2.1 is missing some lower register bass compared to equivalent TI based DACs I have. What is there is very sharp and clear however. I just want to compare the 2.1 to a 2 and then look into the effect of the Kali, Volt and Capacitance Multiplier on the sound. I guess that's when I give my personal review.

On the point of player effect - I also have tried 3 different players and not heard any significant difference on the Pi DACS.

Jonners your post indicates you may know how to switch modes on the Piano - at present the only option (aside from the TI software) is the Max2Play software which Allo promotes as the default option for the Vana player. I have not yet tried it (it seems there is a short free license for it) but I plan to look into it as soon as time permits. Is there another option you are aware of?

Mike in a previous post you said:

"My bass was a little light and recessed as well, but I SSH'd into the Pi and set the alsamixer to -4.50db which was I think must be near 100 on the scale as next notch up was into the red, as it was originally way down at the bottom of the scale, as soon as I did that, oh boy bass was back big time, made me jump lol"

Maybe I am hearing that same "light bass" as I have not changed any defaults in Moode 3.1

Its the actual settings used for the 2.1 setup I am trying to investigate as I do not fully understand why there would be a need to apply a cut over level to the main DAC (or even the sub DAC?). I don't have a sub but would have thought the sub speakers onboard filtering would take care of selecting the bass level it needs so in theory the sub DAC could run as a normal config? Just thinking out loud here as no experience of subs.

I have been running a sub in my Hi-fi system for a few weeks just to help the little standmounts that I have, I'm pretty sure the standard cut off is 80-100mhz so that's maybe why the Piano 2.1 is set at 80.

I've since removed the sub as it's not really needed now that my phono stage is much better than my built in stage in my amp. I didn't really need it with the Pi anyway.

There are settings in Volumio for the Piano 2.1 which give a choice of 2.0, 2.1 or 2.2 operation. If using one or two subs there's an option that is supposed to set the crossover point, between 60Hz and 200Hz. I say 'supposed to' because I couldn't get it to work in 2.2 mode as intended. I posted my findings on the Volumio forum and Allo replied that there are bugs in the DSP which they are trying to fix.

Andre, do the setting changes in Volumio and Max2Play actually write to the DAC to make the changes persistent (i.e. until the next change) or do they only apply software filters which control the DACS during the actual playing of music?

Jonners, thanks for the info on Volumio I will check out the discussion there.

There are four different digital filters that can be selected for some of the PCM 5xxx chips. I can't hear much difference between them.
Some of the other settings are a mystery to me too.

I have been running the Kali reclocker / Piano 2.1 combination on RPi 2 for some time.
This represents a fantastic value and great sound quality at very little money.
Running Moode 2.6.

Been doing lots of A/B testing RPi2 / Kali/Piano 2.1 against Desktop PC / Windows7 / JRiver / Asus Xonar Essence STX sound card.
Started the same song on both devices at equal sound level. Using large Genelec monitors.

I am addicted to 96K resampling. Resampling brings out the digital effects and soundscapes
on modern music. So both palyers were running resampling at highest quality.

Some friends could not tell the difference between PC / RPi. They could not believe
that the small, inexpensive RPi could sound this good.

After many tests, I can hear only one difference. The Kali/Piano/RPi/Moode combination
introduces a small amount of soft compression on the sound. This is a matter of
opinion, but I would like it without compression. The PC/Xonar Essence is a bit
more lush and open. The RPi slightly compressed.

I have plans to test Volumio. Also the Volt amplifier with Sparky SBC.

1+ for Moode 3.1

I (think) I noticed that the sound actually "opens up" after a week or so. My boards have been running almost non-stop for the past days and I'm very surprised at the robustness of the Moode 3.1 software which hasn't dropped a frame since I started the run-in.. I also used the max. up-sampling rate for a day or two to find out how the Pi3 would handle the beating and it barely got over 40°C @ around 8-11% of cpu usage according to the "Audio Info" window in Moode :carrot:

Upsampling to 384kHz in Moode 3.1 using the Advanced Kernel setting will bypass the Piano DAC chip's internal digital filters (which some reckon to be a weak point). Sounds good to me. :)

With the caveat that I don't really understand how these things work I just put them together and follow the instructions! Wouldn't putting it up to 384kHz mean the Kali wouldn't work as that maxes out at 192 according to the spec? If that's not the case 24 or 32 bit?

If that is the case, is there a way of defeating the filters without maxing out the up sampling i.e. an off switch? It strikes me they might be a bit like tone controls that I said goodbye to in nineteen eighty something!

According to the sales page on Volumio, the 44/48MHz version (which is the only one sold now) will go up to 384kHz. The Moode 'Audio Info' certainly shows that's happening.
There's no other way of defeating the filters, and they only work way up in the ultrasonic region to keep those frequencies out of amps that don't like them.

are you setting up your NAS as a source in Moode or accessing it through a upnp service such as Twonky or Asset?
was mode a typo and you meant to put Moode app, either way I haven't come across that app on android perhaps given your mention of ALAC you are using iOS?

I am planning to swap out my Pi 2 for a Pi 3 and try out Moode again because SQ seemed better listening to upsampled Suzanne Vega's Cracking through headphones but my wife can't understand why I visibly flinch when it skips! Is it just me or do others have a physical reaction to things like that? Sorry I digress!

I will also try attaching a USB drive to the Pi/Kali/Piano set up to see if it makes any difference - eliminate the variables one at a time 😀

The NAS is set as a source in in Moode.
You are correct in suggesting it was a Moode browser being used to control the player and not an actual app (sorry for that mistake).

I also don't up sample unless I play DSD files which the Kali/Piano combo seems to need. All Moodes settings are otherwise default apart from the kernel being changed to advanced.

I can't upsample to 384Khz, nothing comes through whatsoever.

Right now I have it disabled.

Using Pi2, Kali, Piano 2.1, Moode 3.1

Any ideas?

Seems weird. Is your music directly connected to the RPi via USB, or via the network?

Good idea. My USB drive is directly attached, and occasionally if I'm very attentive I get the sense that a tiny skip has happened. Not enough to make me go 'ouch' though.

Had a thought: Does your Kali have the 22/24MHz clocks or 44/48MHz?
If the former, it would be unable to go up to 384Hz.

I have now swapped the Pi 3 running asset with Pi 2 on the Kali/Piano set up and on 1st impressions it seems to have illuminated both the clicking and skipping switching between tracks, all FLAC, of various types 16/44.1, 24/96 & 24/192 I have yet to hear any clicks or skips :) - using Moode 3.1 with max upsampling

Listening through headphones (it was 6:00 am!) I listened to one of my current favourites (Cara Dillon - Upon a Winter's Night - O Holy Night) as it is just 2 female voices a-cappella I thought any skipping would be very obvious and there was none. However there was some clicking, that of the singer's tongues against the tops of their mouths  -is there a name for that noise?

I am still using the NAS - Asset upnp (pi2) - Pi3/Kali/Piano set up controlled with Bubble upnp on Android. I am sticking with this because I like the interface and smart way Asset handles "the", I couldn't go back to 80% of groups being listed under T.

The downside of switching the Pis is that indexing the music took longer but I may get another Pi 3 in the New Year or even wait until the next Pi version appears!

A couple of questions to finish with:
-In this mode the 192k blue led on the Kali is permanently flashing - does this match others experience and is it OK? (Andre?)
-In terms of 'burn-in' is there any point in setting up a long and varied playlist and just letting it run 24x7 without any output on i.e. power amp off?

Thanks and happy Christmas

Currently all Kalis seem to be 44/48MHz, but when it first came out there was a 22/24MHz option. You may need a good light and a magnifying glass to read the numbers!

hi to all.
we used to deliver the VANA music system based on our sparky single board computer with the 22/24Mhz KALI because Sparky could not go over 192khz sample rate.
After, we decided to only manufacture the 44/48Mhz KALI to have 1 product for both RPI (up to 384Khz) and Sparky.
the ones who got the VANA players first certainly got the 22/24 KALI version.

Hope this helps

Hi Andre.

I think I may have a problem with mine.

My KALI has 44.1khz and 48khz family lights and it also has the up-sampling 192khz LED (amongst lower rate LED's).

The thing is, I can't get it to work at 384khz. I just get no sound whatsoever.

A bit of trouble shooting here... Does anyone have the RPI compatibility DIP switch set to 'ON' on the 2.1? I still have mine on the sparky setting.

Also, the HAT on/off dip switch on the KALI is set to off.

Hi Josie,
From what Andre wrote above, isn't it likely that you have the 22/24MHz version? That is limited to 192kHz.
I'm using the RPI, so I have RPi compatibilty set to ON on the 2.1; and HAT on the Kali set to OFF.

Hi all.

Yes, problem solved. Got the latest KALI from Andre (with many thanks :) ) and it's now upsampling 384khz setting. :)

However, I'm still getting an occasional skip. I can re-create it too on a specific track so it's not random. It's not the track either because if I rewind the track and replay where it skipped it plays fine, no skip.

If I set it to 16bit 44.1khz setting it no longer skips in the same areas but it still does, just less frequent.

I've tried changing the buffer size all the way up to 32,768 but no difference. Also tried the USB fix in Moode.

So. I'm currently using the RPI2 so just wondering if it's that, maybe?

Any ideas chaps?

Are you streaming the audio or is it connected directly via USB? Are you playing wav, flac, mp3......?

in moode, there is a "audio info" window which shows the processor usage of the Pi. On a Pi3, the usage barely goes over 10-15% while upsampling (as a reference point)

I'm using 2 different DACs with Moode on advanced kernel and have not noticed any skipping yet. I also play a lot of hi res files which would stress anything if processing was the issue. All my PI's are 3.

4) ctrl-x y <return> to save the file

Could your broadband connections have some factor in this. I used to get this on occasion and think there was a fault with rip but it would play fine next time. When i switched to another router etc it pretty much stopped, bar a very occasional one..

HDMI is an output connector on the pi, so that would never work I think.
Optical input is not present on the Piano or Kali if I'm right, but maybe you could buy one more board to add this functionality, quite sure Allo doesn't have this but must be available somewhere.
Why would you feed the output from your tv to your pi??

I was thinking that if it were possible to use the DAC on the Pi it would improve the SQ from the TV. After some extensive searching I think it's a non-starter and I would probably be better off getting a second hand DAC ON EBay or wherever.

My personal opinion is that if you want to try to make this work, just because you can, just because it's cool to try, you might get it to work, but not very easily and not very cheap too I think.
If you just want a better sound quality from your tv to your hifi, the cheap eBay DAC is the way to go.

If you decide to go go for option 1, let us know, because it would be cool to hear your plan and for some help from here :)

Very excited... Today I got the latest version of hardware from ALLO.

It's called the BOSS. It's a single card that combines the KALI and DAC in one.

Not tried it yet but a full review and of course some pics are on the way so don't worry. :)

Okay...

So, I've now had the BOSS running in the system for a few days and what can I say... very, very nice indeed.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2241/32806710815_444aff8eaf_h.jpg

One thing I found over using the KALI/PIANO 2.1 combo was that the transient details have been improved for certain. For example, one of my reference albums I use is by Shpongle. With lots of focused and dynamic bass and oodles of transient effects. On one track there is a water drop style effect. This with the KALI/PIANO was great but with the BOSS in charge :) there is a noticeable improvement in space and depth.

On other albums like Muddy Waters, The Beatles, Goldfrapp, PJ Harvey, Teenage Fanclub, Ride, The Rolling Stones, Lemon Jelly, Iron Maiden, I found the improvements the same, drums seem more fluid and the timing is simply stunning.

The bass has again been improved in dynamics. It has more kick with more air making it that little bit more realistic and not over zealously fatiguing . With the mix of improvements in timing and nano resolution this little baby really puts a grin on your face.

There is certainly some wizardry here and it's most certainly the best sound I've heard so far in the RPI configuration. This is moving towards a very analogue sound, and (dare I say it) a very 'vinyl like', with a natural presentation with no harshness. There are no horrid aspects to what I can here that you can get from some DAC's.

All in all... I find it's a very nice improvement over the KALI/PIANO combination. I don't listen to much classical and if I do it's mostly on vinyl but I do love ambient music, acoustically or digitally created so I find this to cope well with very delicate passages but on that note I do find the IQAudio's tone slightly more attuned to this over the BOSS and the KALI/PIANO.

The BOSS makes me think what we are all trying to achieve with digital and for me it's both accuracy and drama to which some DAC's (RPI based or otherwise) can give an uneven keel on presenting.

Quite respectively on balance the BOSS has it. It's a little gem of a DAC.

BTW: At the moment of testing this, Volumio 2 didn't allow any up-sampling so there is even more scope.

ALLO.com
10-02-2017, 08:58
Wow! (as usual) .
Great detail, I can visualize it.
That bass has been mentioned by a few of the ones who received the first units produced. Its thanks to the high end super capacitor we use and the electricity jolt it sends over precisely when needed.
Stock will be available before the end of the month.

What do you guys think?

Andre

Being more a classical music lover, isn't the bass too pronunciated? Or would the Piano 2.1/KALI-combination be better in that respect?

Hi Jogchum.

On balance I'd say the BOSS because I feel the space it gives and the timing seems to be more apparent which is a good thing and there really isn't much in it between the PIANO/KALI and the BOSS.
