View Full Version : Post your nostalgic images of the 1970s...
Although I was rather young for most of them, I have very fond memories of the 1970s, and the fun times I had then as a kid. Which products, pictures or items remind you fondly of this iconic era?
Here are some of mine:

Me too. Six lessons at 18/6d a go. Job done, passed first time. Getting my two kids through their tests a few years ago cost over a grand each!

Nice one, Jo. Loved watching all those programmes! :)
Surprised that Macca hasn't posted on this thread yet, as it would be right up his street...
Anyway, let's try and keep it to actual physical things though, which evoke for you nostalgic memories of the 70s. Come on, even some of you 'oldies' here who weren't kids in the 70s must have memories of physical items, such as I've listed, which instantly take you back to those wonderfully halcyon days...

Ah, gotcha now... The cassette player was a good one, and something I can greatly relate to! Let's keep it though to inanimate objects, such as your tape deck, and not images of old TV programmes, bands, etc :)
I had one of those mono cassette players exactly like this:
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/923/p8iMwp.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pnp8iMwpj)
It's the first thing I played music on, even before I got a 'Dansette-type' record player.
And what about 'Ghetto Blasters', before they really took off in the 80s? I had one like this in the late 70s:
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/921/YWcmbH.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/plYWcmbHj)
Also, the lovely NOS tapes we used to use with them, such as:

Spoilsport:D. 70s was all about dodgy fashion
Lol - not all of it. I've managed to come up with quite a few things that have nothing to do with fashion! ;)
Surely you can do the same? Can you relate to any of the images I've posted? :)
Marco.
I had one of these Philips cassettes. It went everywhere i did including work

Desperately cool, and helped to cut down smoking since more than one an hour would probably make you throw up.
Nice one, Granty. I remember the heaters and the Bird's Instant Whip! :)
Some of my nicest memories, as a kid in the 70s, were when my mum would take me into Glasgow for shopping and/or to go to the cinema, even perhaps for a meal at an Italian restaurant, when my dad was at work or doing something else at home.
We'd leave Orchard Park, where we lived in the south side of Glasgow, on a green and yellow bus like this, and go into the city centre (often in those days on bleak, rainy afternoons):
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/922/fzvYDp.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pmfzvYDpj)
And first of all we'd go to my mum's favourite store in Glasgow, called Dalys (it was often known as the 'Harrods of the north'), where she'd buy a new dress and handbag or something:
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/HPOGsw.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/poHPOGswj)
The inside of that store was absolutely amazing, with wood-panelled walls, chandelier-style lighting, crazy old lifts with black 'caged' doors, manned by some old guy in a suit, who would introduce what was on all the floors, as you reached them. A bit like it was on the TV programme 'Are You Being Served?'
It was all rather posh, but my mum loved it. I of course would be bored stiff, but knew I was going to be treated later, so the wait was worth it!
Then we'd pop into Woolworth's and get some sweets from the pick & mix, before going to the cinema:
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/922/7DwKLm.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pm7DwKLmj)
I used to love chocolate limes and Ruffle bars!
After that, we'd go the the Odeon, on Renfield St, often to see a Disney film, such as 101 Dalmatians or Dumbo (of course that's not what's shown here):
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/e1hpv7.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/poe1hpv7j)
Then when that was finished, she'd take me to Fraser's department store, especially during Christmas time, to buy me something nice, which was often the Subbuteo football teams I posted a pic of earlier or some Lego. Fraser's was always beautifully decorated at Christmas, especially in those days on the famous balcony:
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/922/bmEukN.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pmbmEukNj)
Stunning, and exactly what department stores should look like! At least that's how they did in their 'golden era'. Then before going home we might pop into the O Sole Mio restaurant, for a lasagne al forno:
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/921/XzvJ6e.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/plXzvJ6ej)
That was (still is) a fantastic place to eat, and in those days, very warm and cosy inside, with quaint little booths and typical 70s decor.
After that, it was back home in the bus, where I'd play with all my new toys! Wonderful days
Marco.

Cool coat, Shane! :respect:
For the Glaswegians here, old enough to remember some of the traditional, classy, city-centre department stores of the 70s (such as Dalys), which I illustrated earlier, I used to get my school uniform, cap, blazer, shorts and socks (for the prep school I attended) in Paisley's, situated in Jamaica St:

Another one to delight the heart of any Plymothians. A mid-70s shot of Robert Lenkiewicz's astonishing Barbican mural. The observant will notice a sign above the blue door that reads "Hi-Fi Discount Service". The two floors above Robert's studio were the premises of Wanstall Hi-Fi from '72 to '77. He used to get a bit peeved with us when the stock room was full as the ceiling below would sag down and touch the top of his easel! Quite a significant place in the history of UK hifi, the seeds of what became JPW and Heybook were sown here.

I remember Goldbergs, Grant. Was the SCWS building something to do with the Co-Op?
Marco.
It was scottish coop head office. They had warehouses and factories all over glasgow. Dad was boss of a big coop so we got to go there a lot. Lots of goodies at wholesale prices for senior directors and family...about the only perk tbh.
My father used to work at the factory where they made Champion spark plugs. The freebies weren't as good as when he worked at Cadbury's. When he worked there, he'd bring home mis-shaped chocolates, mostly Bar Six, which was Cadbury's attempt at a rival for KitKat.

Nice one. I thought it was something to do with the Co-Op. There are some beautiful buildings in Glasgow, which often go unappreciated, and that is one of them :)

Interesting stuff, Joe, especially about the spark plugs. I'd have loved to have seen those being made!
I also remember Bar Six, as my dad used to sell all that stuff in his chippy. There was a huge array of all sorts of wonderful chocolates and sweets in a glass display cabinet, just in front of the cigarettes.
Here are a few classic chocs I remember being sold in the shop:

Nope, matey. Must've missed that. Looks like an interesting shop, though! What kinda stuff did they sell? :)
Do you remember Paisley's and Daly's department stores? John Collier ['the window to watch'], for suits, was another classic!

They sold shirts where you could get your initials embroidered on the pocket , Levi Staypress , Doc Martins . Basically all the stuff that was in fashion at the time . Still do today :)
The only time we were anywhere near Paisley was when we went to the seaside
I do remember John Collier though :)
Ah, nice one. I use to go to the Army & Navy stores for most of the stuff you mention. That's where the bulk of my 'uniform' for secondary school was bought :eyebrows:
Also, I tended to avoid shopping for clothes in the city centre, as it was usually very busy and a bit of a ball-ache, so used to go into Shawlands a lot, which was only down the road from me, and in those days packed full of decent shops :)

Aye but could you get a shirt with your initials on it :D
This is from of a set of images that we have of myself and my brothers playing football that appeared in the Daily Express.
Our pet Roe Deer just loved to join in.

They bring back so many memories of my/our childhood growing up in the countryside in the early 70's, learning to shoot (shotguns/large calibre rifles), fish and drive by age 12, different times.
Amusingly, one of our teachers was called John Collier.
A schoolfriend of mine once tried to burn a hole in Mr Collier's jacket by focusing the sun's rays on to it through a magnifying glass. When he realised what was going on, Mr Collier said 'What on earth do you think you're doing, boy?', to which Sean calmly replied 'Setting fire to your jacket, sir'.

Wot? D - A - F - T - E - E ? :eyebrows:
Which primary and secondary school did you got to, btw? Did you always live on the 'north side' of the city, or what? :)

:lolsign:
Love it! Bet he got caned, or a few strokes of the belt for it, though?
We used to get up to all sorts... Leaving tacks, pointy side up, on the teacher's chair, firing 'missiles' at him or her from the back of the class, often via the use of a 'peashooter' (the empty shell of a plastic pen), and my personal favourite, very carefully sticking 'little notes' onto (usually his) back when walking past, which read: 'Kick me, I'm an arse'.
Some of them would walk around all day with those 'wee notes' stuck to their jackets, to the great hilarity of all the kids reading it, until another teacher spotted it and pointed it out! :D

Nah mate out in the sticks , not far from where I live now but still ten miles outside Glasgow . Never was a city boy :)
Loving those pics, Mike! Must've been great fun growing up in the countryside :)

Awesome. I got into that in my mid-teens, but mainly shotguns, which I used for hunting rabbits/birds and game with my dad. We went to a farm, near Stewarton. Started off with a little 4-10, then moved up to a 20-bore (a lovely Beretta), then finally a 12-bore, and used both side-by-sides and over-and-unders. Did some clay-pigeon shooting, too.
My dad even had gunpowder and a cartridge making machine, so used to make his own shotgun cartridges! We use to have quite an extensive gun cabinet at home. These days, due to the stricter laws, we stick to (pre-charged) air-rifles, and do indoor target shooting at a local club.

Here is my portable compact cassette player, under the name of Radiola. It was made by Philips as the internals are identical to the Philips machines.
I have just renovated it, fitted a new set of belts and adjusted the mechanics so it works properly. Still sounds cr*p though.
Interestingly the microphone lead acts as the carry strap complete with length adjustment latch. Not come across this before.
