External speaker 'lining'

I have read a bit about stopping rear reflections on the back of the panel of open baffle speakers. This will be invisible from the front, but with the baffles a little closer to the rear wall than is desirable could do a job.

Some people are covering them with felt, but this seems a bit 'thin'. On the other hand carpet seems a bit thick.

Does anyone have recommendations as to what can be used. It needs to do the job but be reasonably visually attractive.

The felt or towels can and do help. What i heard was adding some bottles or glasses in front of the felt sitting on something like a shelf or table, in line with the rear of the main driver works a treat.

Not sure that would go down well in our shared room, unless they were filled with Prosecco :)

Many years ago somebody built a speaker called the Boffle. A cross between a box and baffle. If I recall, there was a system of smaller panels at the rear to distribute and diffuse output from the rear of the main baffle.

Absorbing or redirecting rear output from open baffle speakers has been tried many times. Success is limited though, due to the large wavelength of lower frequencies, which tend to be rather omnidirectional in any case, leading to the inevitable cancellation effects.

Bass is difficult to damp. Loose fibre materials seem most effective. Dense felt and foam just tend to redirect bass signals rather than absorb them.

Doubt they would be seen. But any non flat reflective would do.. you can get them in black foam that do the job. They just disperse the wave before reflection

Carpet underlayment 'felt' ..from 3/8' to 1/2" thick is a reasonable fitment to the insides of Speakers.
Maybe on the outside rear as well ?
There is a thinner Black felt used in Auto upholstery work that could be a reasonably attractive choice.
There is also a surprisingly attractive 1/2" thick Felt type Insulation Material.. made out of recycled /shredded Blue jeans.
