Me? I may leave the family at home to get on with it and shoot off down to my brother's with the pooch to enjoy a 'non-Christmas'. My brother detests the event too. :D
I used in the past to try and get away to 'parts foreign' to avoid Christmas. But it is now a global phenomenon, that even staying in Muslim or Hindu countries there is no getting away from it. :doh:
So this year, my GF and I are going to batten down the hatches and hibernate through the whole period of over-indulgence, and cynical, crass commercial exploitation.
I used to love Christmas as a child, because then it was magical and didn't start until Dec 19th. Now it starts mid-September and I hate it!
I used in the past to try and get away to 'parts foreign' to avoid Christmas. But it is now a global phenomenon, that even staying in Muslim or Hindu countries there is no getting away from it. :doh:
It helps greatly in that respect when you have religious beliefs, and thus shun the commercial nonsense and celebrate Christmas properly for what it *really* is! ;)

It's still "magical" for me, for reasons previously explained. That, and the fact that our cosy little lodge house lends itself very much to wintertime and creating a nice Christmassy vibe! :cool:
*However* I don't want to hear about it until mid October at the earliest!!

I love Christmas. Lots of good childhood memories and I do think people in general are a bit better willed towards one another.
I'm also minded that it can be the the cruelest time of year for many who are missing lost loved ones as bereavement seems to really hit home when there are get-togethers and parties and there's an empty chair.
I always try to take at least a week off work, as it's the end of the year and I think we've all earned a rest - apart from my poor wife of course who has to do all the cooking but I always try my best to help clear things up......like the turkey and roast potatoes, trifle and that sort of thing.

Yes, I'm equally as 'helpful' to my wife in that respect! :eyebrows:
I set and decorate the table (usually for three, but this year it'll be four people, as a friend will be visiting), which is rather time consuming the way we do it, with the different types of cutlery and glasses, for all the various courses and wines), and prepare the wine, which as we enjoy something special at Christmas, needs decanting and/or served at the correct room temperature.
I also make up a compilation of music suitable for playing in the background whilst we're eating, which is usually a mixture of Gregorian chants and something classical, which is suitable for the occasion.
Including decorating the table nicely with holly, candles and fresh flowers, Christmas crackers, etc, and getting the lighting right (so that the room has a cosy and intimate feel) it all takes time! I also do all the washing up afterwards, but hours after the meal once I've digested the food properly, had a wee sleep, whilst monging out in front of the TV, and sobered up! ;)

Well I'm pleased to see I'm not the only one who hates xmas with a vengeance! The crass commercialism, never ending fecking jingle bells haranguing one from every angle, the way it's all encompassing and one is almost forced to participate, the shut shops and pubs, the no trade in the aftermath for weeks or months cos everyone is skint, having no family as such, the loneliness as all ones mates leave to spend it with relatives... So probably me, the cat and a frozen pizza again as usual.... Bah humbug :D

Yes, well actually we had a bit of a dry run on Saturday with a full scale Christmas turkey dinner for my sister in law's birthday as it's her favourite. Yum, yum etc! Absolutely gorgeous it was.
Further good news is my better half made soup out of the remains so turkey broth for lunch tomorrow :D
Our whole social calendar seems to revolve around eating!
And to a degree ours.... Glad to see a Brit brought up with some proper food culture, rather than simply a part of the 'chicken ding' generation! :doh:

Both mine and my wife's family hadn't much spare cash growing up but we always had plenty of good homemade meals and home baking.
Our mums defined "home economics " - eating well cheaply. Typically meant making everything yourself. As kids we didn't think anything of it at the time but looking back they worked miracles, we really were blessed with good nosh, especially at Christmas!

Same but different here. The old man had plenty of money, but was so tight we might as well have been poverty stricken.

Used to do the xmas dinner every year for long and weary. pretty much the same as mum did it, and her mum to. I still make the stuffing for my daughter, and occasionally my neighbours too lol. Always did the turkey well before and had it cut and frozen. Saved time and some risk in case it took longer than usual etc. reheat in stock in oven and it was delish; very succulent. Sausagemeat and oatmeal stuffings really add to occasion.

Bit of a trip for me , 4 hours each way and over 400 miles :eek: Think I will be staying down south ;) so you are safe :D

Del and I are just back from spending 4 nights in Austria (in a remote location approx 1hr south of Salzburg) in a lovely hotel, celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary... We had a really great time, and are now looking forward to spending Christmas and New Year with friends and family, guzzling lots of goodies!! :cool:
