I have a problem with my turntable that is really winding me up. The amount of static electricity that builds up has now cost me another brand new LP where the platter mat has stuck to the record and me with my fists of ham has dropped the bloody record. The turntable is earthed through the pre amp and all connections are secure. There are no static pops or clicks through the amp and it all sounds fine. I've tried putting humidifier pots around the room and even slightly damping the carpet with a mist of water all to no avail. The mat is the standard Linn felt jobby. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Use some bits of double sided sellotape on the platter to hold the mat in place. Also, cleaning/wiping records whilst on the platter hugely increases the level of static (even if you use a carbon fibre brush).

Do you use a RCM ? ( Record cleaning machine ) I find using my unit helps nearly eliminate static ;)

i think (as ive told you before) you have reached a level where you really need to get a rcm to look after your vinyl.
the amount of static you get and the dust that is attracted by it is shocking! (pardon the pun)
you also need some anti static bags to put the newly cleaned vinyl in too,the zerostat helps as well.

+1 :) It works (plus you get clean, shimmering vinyl). Lovely.

RCM kills static or junk the felt mat & use a anti-static platter mat or a thunderon Conductive record brush

A Reso Mat will help too, made all the difference for me.

yep, they do work for that, however they sound crap on the lp-12 and dont fit properly due to the raised lip on the platter.

Use the TNT Audio solution then.

I use one (a Decca), and the way to avoid charging the record, is to touch the (earthed) turntable chassis with your left hand whilst wiping/cleaning the record with your right.

Touching a finger to the top of the spindle when you brush is standard procedure, although having used a Systemdek with a felt mat for many years this doesn't always work so great and the mat sometimes sticks to the record. The issue is really the felt mat, I have no such problems when using a butyl/cork mat or Achromat on my SL1200. Proper RCM cleaning and Nagaoka or MF anti-stat sleeves might help, they certainly won't make it worse.

Huge thanks to everyone for all the help and advice, a Zerostat has been ordered today and I shall look into an RCM and anti static record sleeves too. Hopefully next time you are here Jamie it will be sorted and no more sparks off the dogs nose lol.

See how you go with it, didn't help me in the slightest. Resomat completely cured it, maybe you can find sonething similar that suits the LP 12.

These are good for static... There are some felt/carbon mix mats too which do a good job

Is there a ground connection between the sub chassis and the cross brace which should also be connected to the mains earth
Have you tried earthing the arm base to the cross brace as well

Stop cleaning your records with a brush; letīs face it , it solves nothing click-wise.. Let the stylus clean the grooves and then and clean the stylus. Linn dixit and it works for me. I havenīt used my Moth RCM for years.

i use one too and have no probs either. I also clean and anti static with gun each record and keep in proper liner. Only need cleaned occasionally and never have anything on the stylus; and no static

I have ordered a Zerostat and some Nagaoka record sleeves. I checked all the connections under the Linn which are all good as are all the mains plugs. As a safety precaution I've used some double sided tape to stick the mat down so at least I won't have a fight with it when picking up the records. Once again thanks for all the feedback, it's given me lots of things to try along the way. Shame I can't feed the electricity back into the grid and get money off my bill :laser:

I can't do that because the rotating record is held down with a Mitchell clamp, so I touch the leveling thumbwheels of my Thorens. But agree with you regarding use of an RCM and Nagaoka inner sleeves.

Never liked Zerostat guns, because if used incorrectly they will readily charge up the record, rather than doing what they are supposed to do.

Fortunately I'm not plagued with static problems, but one thing I have noticed is that the lovely thick 'n' heavy vinyl of '50 recording seem to be absolutely immune from any static generation.

It gets really bad, the poor old cat is quite used to sparks up her nose. There's been no audible problems just records sticking to sleeves and the tt mat.

+1 for the RCM and poly-lined bags solution.

The difference is like night and day.

I'm not saying that they don't do anything but I don't use a RCM and have given up using poly sleeves - I still don't get any static issues. There is static on a new record when I first play it but it quickly disperses and doesn't reappear.

Static presence is going to be heavily dependant on the specific enviroment. Dry enviroment plus nylon in the carpets can generate a ton of it.

If they contain nylon then it could well be at least part of the issue.

As an experiment I zapped the curtains and the carpet at that end of the room, hard to tell if there was any effect but records don't " cling " to anything now. I'll keep a humidifier pot nearby and use the Zerostat regularly.

I'd like to hear more about how the SBLs are working out. Interesting speaker, but not one I can recall ever hearing.

I first had a pair of SBLs when they came out back in the late 80s. I had the classic Lp12 with Naim amps which was said to be the only combination that would get the best from the speakers. A few years later I was working for Harbeth and with AS's help worked out that positioning was the crucial factor, they are incredibly fussy and won't sound right if not set up correctly. The advice at the time was to get them as close to a solid back wall as possible to enhance the bass but they actually sound better, tighter bass and clearer mid range when moved between one and two inches away from the wall. Also demounting the crossovers from the cabinets warms the mid as well. I've not done this yet with the new pair as they are going to be stripped down soon anyway for new gaskets and resealing.
The main weakness is the gaskets between the woofer box and the big box underneath. They're quite simple to get to but very fiddly to reseal properly and get the metal spacer pads fixed firmly enough, patience is the best tool for the job.
Sound wise, when set up right they are very fast and lively with a subtle, clear mid range and warm, well defined bass. Some listeners might find the bass a little lacking in depth, even with the welly of the Naim amps but I am using a Musical Fidelity A3 integrated amp and it definitely drives them better, much more dynamic in the bass department.
They are a bit of a Marmite speaker, love 'em or hate 'em but I'm glad I've revisited them.

yep, they do work for that, however they sound crap on the lp-12 and dont fit properly due to the raised lip on the platter.
The Reso-Mat eliminated static charge on my records brilliantly. Plus I like the way it sounds, though can't speak for the outcome on an LP12. They also make them in a size designed to drop down inside a machined platter rim too.
