Artists you love and can't believe didn't make it big

Ride, my second band,had a few albums but never ' made' it big time

Puressence - really like their first 2 albums (Puressence & Only Forever). From memory first album seemed to be well received by music press and I thought they were going to be big but it just didn't seem to happen for them.

Mate, ride were one of the big indie bands in the 80s, they just didn't stay the course. Easily as big selling as mbv or primal scream at the time.

Idlewild - from their early stuff played on Steve Lamaq show I have followed this band. First and second albums sounded like a Scottish Nirvana with all of REM's intelligence and melody. I know they went more of a folk route later on which may have kept them away from the mainstream, unlike many of their contemporaries including Biffy Clyro, Snow Patrol and of course Coldplay who they opened for on their early tours.

Still this has meant I've been able to see them on numerous small stages and meet Roddy and the guys on a few occasions. I still love that band, they can do no wrong by me.

The Chameleons. One of the best bands to come out of Manchester but it just didn't happen for them in a big way.

Add Kitchens Of Distinction to that list. The band name wasn't particularly helpful mind, but I put on 'The Death Of Cool', turn it up and I'm still amazed their expansive sound just didn't catch on in a bigger way.

Here's a "totally poptastic" left field entry from me. Boy Meets Girl, did one album which contained their one hit "Waiting For A Star To Fall" and then.................

Mind you they did write "How Will I Know" and Waiting For A Star To Fall" for Whitney Houston, and did some stuff with Bette Midler, so I suppose they got their pensions early:D

I can only think of one artist and that's Derrin Nauendorf ...

I've seen him live maybe 20 times and although his voice is probably not the best his guitar work is simply amazing.. up with the very best I think..

I liked him best when he was with fellow Aussie Dave Downing in the early days when he first 'hit' the UK.... I still use his 'Live At the Boardwalk' cd as a reference to test any new bit of kit...
