What great kit, sadly I haven't a clue to value but I would bet that shipping the two decks from South Africa would be quite prohibitive. The cartridge and Audio-Technica arm would post quite reasonably.

What sort of money are you looking for, as I think that would be the best starting point.

Hi Clive - that is exactly what I am looking for a valuation as I have looked on E-bay and some other sites but have not come across anything like this that has never been used! Just an update the TD125 is the version without the tone-arm.

Thanks

Is the TD125 a Mk1 or Mk2 and is it in it's plinth or is it just the motor unit?

The systemdek around £150 - £200.
Shure cart around £120 - £150
AT arm £250 - £350

Having said that , if you sell on ebay then expect the unexpected as prices vary hugely and also the shipping costs will be expensive so may result in a lower selling price.

Hi it is a Mk II in its plinth.

17890

No arm though..

Since the items are new and unused, I would expect the following:

Thorens 125 Mk.II in plinth ~£400

Audio Technica AT 1100 arm ~£200

Shure V15 Mk.IV MDR ~£250

You probably will be able to get more, depending on how and where you advertise the goods - especially the Shure cartridge.

I don't really know much about the Systemdeck, save a friend of mine has one, so maybe ~£200.

Zero chance of £400 for the td125 with no arm shipped from SA. The bog standard 125 plinth is terrible and the controller board WILL need to be serviced, the caps will be shot. Probably make more from selling it as parts rather than as a whole.

I would say the same might be the case with the Dunlop, signs of a damp issue maybe with the mat.

My figure was an estimate taken from recent sales on eBay. The fact that it is unused significantly increases its value; buyers will already understand the need for a service, so that will have little bearing on the sale price.

Just look at the sale prices for NIB Garrard 301/401s and Thorens 124s

Still think you're way off the mark. 20% vat plus 4% import duty plus shipping plus couriers 'admin' charge, even £300 is optimistic for a tt that pretty much goes under the radar as far as 'classic' tt's go.

Agree the 125 is not as classic as the 124 or Garrards, but they are gaining increasing attention, just as Goldring G99s are. After being 'rubbished' by the Flat Earth fraternity of Linn/Naim groupies, enthusiasts are starting to realise the 125 is a very good deck - I would choose one over a Linn LP12 anyday.

Yes, with VAT and import duty it becomes closer to £500, but that does not reflect the value of the item in itself. It is, as I say, "New in Box".

No such thing as a bargain now for such an item or items in this condition.

These machines are rare in this condition and getting rarer by the day.

Age does NOT automatically dictate the need for "re-capping" - a rather generalistic term I feel that is thrown around easily but demonstrates a rather lacadaisical approach to proper fault finding and rectification.

We have 50 year old tape recorders at my workplace that have not had a single component replaced in their lives and are run day in day out.

I feel Barry's estimates are entirely realistic in a market now bouyant with regard to anything retro.

Hmm, 40 year old electrolytics caps that havent been powered up for 40 years need replaced and anyone who says otherwise isn't giving good advice.
TD125 is a great deck, I ditched an lp12 for one, but the controller will need the caps and the pots replaced. I've restored 7 or 8 now.

But hey, eBay can get you great prices if you get a bidding war.

I think it depends much on storage conditions, but in general I would agree. I have bought items dating from the 50s, electrical in nature, and the wiring and capacitors needed replaced, to make them safe.

It's the little tiny buggers that fail - the big capacitors used in power supplies and motor servo circuits rarely give trouble.

As you say you should use caution if powering from an idle state after more than a decade but honestly in my own experience i usually have to replace 2 or 3 capacitors before all is well.

I have seen problems with cheap and nasty components but only in domestic equipment thus far.

I will never advocate blanket re-caps before proper fault finding and diagnosis / rectification has been carried out. Such operations lead to misery later on.

It's the 709 op amp that usually goes in a TD125.

The storage conditions were dry & cool, also we are far from the coast so little danger of rust and decay caused by humidity.

Clear evidence of Globalisation/instant comunication erasing geography effects.
Many assume there is a Universal Market place The "I saw it on Ebay valuation"
Reality is some places/markets pay foolish prices while others do not.
As example I have an '82 Yamaha, it's restored /pristine. etc.
In MY part of the world these trade hands for ~2500$ ...Maybe.
In Ebay.UK these often list for ~7500 gbp's. Occaissionally 10,000.
Different place, different Market.
There's No logic to it IMO
Naive thoughts of shipping Mine to the UK, involves pricey shippings and massive Import taxations.
Still, greed fantasies often trump common sense ;)
