I can't quite believe it myself but I've been doing Girly Things tonight.... sewing would you believe....:eek: while the toons are on of course... :D

Nothing wrong with a bit of sewing. I mend my stuff as needs be. Quite good at it actually, better than the females in the house. :D

Still do a bit myself although no machine these days. Probably as well lol
Used to convert old shirts to short sleeve fitted collarless ones. Was a cheap way to be fashionable back in the day. They came out very well

The wife's dad was a tailor and he was a Dab hand at these things

Just been adjusting a waistband on a skirt.... it was just a bit too large..

Using a rather marvelous machine we purchased a year or so ago at great expense.. :doh:

How much is a good sewing machine these days? (Something like a Husqvana, Elna, Singer or Frister and Rosmann.)

My Sewing machine is now 106 years olde and still perfectly fine :) Singer... British engineering at it's best.

Mum used an old singer... It was treadle powered and worked great if you could get the hang of it.. When she was given an electric one she didnt like it and took years to get on with it.lol. She ended up preferring the electric but took about 10 years... She never got on with new typerighters, preferring the manual action and refused to use a word processor, as it required a llight touch that she had been taught not to have.. Boy, could she type on those old things though...

Yes, my mum had a treadle one too! It was great! My grandma used to be a seamstress and had a big Singer... it was huge with a dodgy (add on) electric motor from the 30's which took the place of the peddle treadle. It had frayed wires and gave her electric shocks now and then... lol The belt was lethal too! Fingers... belt... Ouch! - It was obviously out of bounds to us but she made allsorts on it and used it mostly every day.

Aye, the belt was strong..think it was leather. Hers was big too. All wraught iron and wood and was size of a kitchen table lol. I have to sew by hand now and im not good at that! But if i want it done it has to be me... Daughter is hopeless at it.

lol.. Yes, it was leather.

Proper machine. And yes, it was huge. Table size. The iron arm was huge and the balance wheel was I think about 10" in diameter. Proper monster. She said it would sew anything... probably leather.

We've got one of these Janome DC3050 computerised jobbies... it's an amazing machine. I think it was about £300
