Spied this on Gumtree but it may not be what you're looking for as I don't know the difference between the improved and non-improved :)

The original S2 was a medium mass tonearm. The Improved version had a thinner arm tube with a lower mass for high compliance cartridges such as at the Shure V15/III, which were popular in the 70s.

The SME 3009/S2 had an effective arm mass of 12.5g. The 'Improved' version had an effective mass of 9.5g - largely brought about by only catering for cartridges of low mass (and requiring lower VTF (< 2.5g)). It also uses a different arrangement to achieve lateral balance and equalisation of the force on the knife edge bearings.

Perhaps "Improved" was not the best description of the new model at the time, but in marketing terms it certainly worked!

Anyway, I'm still looking for the Non-Improved version with the greater mass ...;)

I should also add that after the old stock of steel knife-edge bearings was exhausted, the counterweight-decoupling flange was redesigned slightly so as to take the new nylon knife-edge bearing. Later still, there were small cosmetic changes made to arm pad for the lowering device; the latest version having the pad as part of the lowering device itself.

I believe the new arm justified the appellation "improved", as it separated the lateral balance weight away from the counterweight, so preventing it exerting a considerable torsional force on the rubber counterweight decoupling bush causing the whole VTF/lateral balance assembly to 'sag' with time. New rubber decoupling bushes are still available, but SME now no longer service the 3000 series arms.

Well spotted .. this must have only just been listed after I looked at PFM classifieds at 9.30 this morning !!

No problem Steve, I hope it's what you are looking for. I have the exact 1 your looking for but I'm afraid it's not for sale.
I had mine rewired and a dash pot refill by Jonny (Audio origami) it was well worth it.
