View Full Version : Hafler DH-120 Power Amp

Whilst I'm on a sales roll today, let's see if we can find a home for this:
Hafler DH-120 power amp. It's not in great cosmetic condition. There are numerous scratches which have been touched in. The fascia isn't too bad so it would look ok in a rack.
It's operational and sounds very decent. It has variable outputs (per channel) which operate cleanly without crackle. Could be quite useful to if you need to adjust gain in your system. No horrible hums etc audible on my system.
I did notice that the right hand side heat sink (as you look at it) gets warmer than the left. It might even out if left switched on or it might be a sign that it needs re-biasing. No evidence of anything amiss inside and the output on both channels seems pretty even.
It's had one of the speaker outputs replaced as pictured.
I'd like to see £50 for it.
Collection only from Bicester (M40 J9) I'm afraid as I'm fed up with posting things for them to arrive not working / damaged / not at all.

just to add my threepence worth - this is a very good amp (was it built from a kit?) and an absolute steal at the asking price. :)

Thanks for the positive comments. Would like this out of the way if anyone wants to come and get it.
Nice passive synth on this too... Came out in early 80,s and was either fully built or kit form. One of the great amps around today from that period. Bet it still sounds great too.
Someone buy this as its gonna annoy me lol

Yes, swapping to it from my Sugden AU51p doesn't make it sound bad at all.

My DH200 has uneven heat as well. If circuits the same, it might be the 'idle' adjuster on each side (you can increase Class A by upping it...)

As long as the difference is not huge I wouldn't worry about it.. mosfets are much more tolerant of "maladjustment" than normal transistors in this respect. So long as they are within say 25% of each other it won't make any difference.
Why has this not sold? Weird. Probably has the edge on a Quad 405 maybe even on a 306, and for £50....

Can I ask for opinions from the hive? How would this compare to the power amp section of my Pioneer SA-9500? Would this be an improvement running the pre- into this? The rest of the set up is a rega Tt into a firebottle and a caiman dac. Speakers are cura ca21. Obviously I'd need to try it, just looking for justification for the drive to pick it up...

Yes it probably would be an upgrade. I remain amazed, shocked and disappointed in the world of hi fi that this bargain remains unsold... now't as queer as folks as they say:scratch:

Oh yes. It was also available as a kit so loads of info available. Seems like I'm getting to be unofficial salesman for this! No connection with seller BTW! Just perplexed as to how come such a good amp, going this cheap, is generating so little interest:scratch:
David Hafler was kind of USA's Peter Walker and was responsible for some landmark designs such as the Dynaco Stereo 70 valve amp and was the originator (in the USA anyway... probably Blumlein got there first here in UK) of the ultralinear output circuit for valve power amps... and of course the "Hafler derived rear channel" mock ambisonics... The DH series of mosfet power amps were amongst the earliest such things in mass production outside of Japan and were very well thought of in their day (early 80's ish but were probably available for 10 years or so)

It's tempting because I live in Cheltenham, so not that far to drive really. It's the age of the thing that puts me off and the fact that I know I'd end up spending a lot of time (and probably money) messing about with it (researching mods, recapping etc) when I'd rather spend my free time doing other things.

I wouldn't let that put you off. They tend not to go wrong. That's why you still see quite a few about. My mate has my old one and it's going strong and they don't need 'upgrading'.

You're probably right but that wouldn't stop me trying.
Have been advised by the seller that this item has now been sold.
(Why he couldn't do this himself is a mystery.)

All you need do is to make a new post stating the item has been sold. It's as simple as that!
As a rule we leave all sales threads intact, as they can be of interest to potential sellers and buyers who want to see the sort of items that are advertised in Private Exhibitions. However if the seller insists the thread be deleated, we can do that for them.
Anyway I'm glad you have finally managed to sell the amp. I'm at a loss as to why such little interest was shown here, but it's nice to know that someone out there has got an absolute bargain.
