Speedos

Does anyone know which is more accurate, your speedo or sat nav. I was told years ago that most speedos were at least 10% down on the reading. I find that the difference between the speedo and sat nav is sometimes more than 10% and my car is not that old.

Is the sat-nag showing that you are going slower than the speedo suggests?

I have always believed that speedos show a higher than actual speed. The sat-nag will be the more accurate.

Don't speeding offenses have to take in a 10% margin of error to allow for the inaccuracy of speedometers? So to be done in a 50 zone you would have to be clocked doing at least 55?

IIRC, Construction and use regs demand that a speedometer be either correct or over-reading at 30mph. Given that if you build a hundred speedometers designed to read correctly, then half will read over and half will read under, manufacturers design them to read over. Nowadays probably less since speedos became electronic rather than mechanical.

Reminds me of a friend of mine who used to buy, 'do up' and sell cars. He bought an Austin Mini for about fifty quid, with 240,000 miles on the clock. I remarked to him that this was a little high. Not a problem, says he. In a trice he had the dash off and the clock out. 'Just make a little adjustment here and we can fix that problem'. He took the back off the unit and a little bit of paper with some writing on it fell out onto the floor. I retrieved it. It read: 'Oh No! Not Again!

Hey, I wore those items for years when i was a racer. Lol... Ah, those were the days when young and fit!

As for speedos, ive not come across many that are accurate, and as said, most over read. Would be nice to know if a sat nav is accurate or not

AFAIK, Sat Navs are extremely accurate. I think if you maintain a steady speed, they can be accurate to 0.1mph.

Na! Too busy training....one of the reasons i gave it the heave-ho... Took too much time, and when young and randy, with a love of partee, then something had to give.
Adults are inclined to push kids to hard, and it has a negative effect often. Sad, as i was good, and had a good chance of going to Commonwealth games that year.

Mind you, the gals used to mix with the boys on occasion lol

Thought that but wasnt sure Ali. We often went to jobs on convoys, and used to try and stay at set speed, but every type of motor had a different speed to what the speedo said.some as much as 10 miles an hr. Didnt have sat nav then. I used to use a sat nav and it had all the speed bit and told you what speed an area should be etc, so i usually went with its reading more than what the speedo said

Sometimes the sat nav is about 7 miles more than the car speedo (depending on speed). Mind you I drive a Renault so maybe it is something lost in translation:)

Sat navy are way more accurate the the speedo unit in the car, speedos need to over read so that due to different tyre rolling readings and wear on tyres that you can't be guilty of speeding due to inaccuracy of the factory fit device, sat navs of course need to be accurate for time and distance in order to be able to tell you when and were to turn.
