Anyone got a Shure M97xe ( or similar ) cartridge they would like to sell or swap for a very nice set of silver hybrid interconnects .

I've got an M95ED spare (along with loads of other older Shures). Think I've got a new original stylus for that too.

M44, M55, and M75 variants all ideal if he has them. Not so sure about the M95 or M97 types, that might be a bit of a stretch, but I'm willing to be proved wrong.

Thanks Hugh , I have an M44-7 , with a new stylus , fitted at the moment and it sounds very good indeed . . I would just like to try a better cartridge .

Firstly, I haven't heard an M97 but (and at the risk of putting myself out of a sale), I wouldn't say that the M95 was 'better' than a 44-7 with a decent stylus. They sound a bit different. The M95 was the first of the Shures to sound a bit less warm - I guess a little more 'precise' in the bass but to be honest, there's not a night and day difference.
I have several M44-7 and I like them. The fact that their popularity on SL12xx means that a half decent, reasonably priced, 'genuine' new stylus is available is also a bonus. Some say that the older brown body versions of both that and the M55 are preferable to the later black bodies. I have both but I've never compared them side by side.

In the realm of old MM cartridges that sound good I recommend the Ortofon VMS30E. They are no longer made but were not rare back in the day (early to mid 80's).
Excellent tracking ability, neutral, good transparency and front to back depth. One of the best MM's available IMHO and certainly at a reasonable price.
I'm an MC fan myself but find the VMS30E to mainly lose out to MC's in dynamic clout. Compliance is lower than the VMS20E and they track at 1.6g

I take it you're a Shure cartridge fan Geoff :) In your opinion is the M55E better than the M44-7 ?

To be honest, I've never done a back to back test on the same deck to be able to answer that.
The M55E certainly has a few followers on here and one advantage of that cartridge is that you can buy a Jico SAS stylus for it (if you're rich). They only do standard tips for the 44.

Hah ! No Jico for me then Geoff . Do you know if the M55e stylus fits the M44 body ?

Yes, the M55E stylus will fit the M44 body, but the combination will not have the same specification as that of the M55E.

Hah ! Couple of weeks ago mate . I got it up and running very quickly and I'm quite surprised at how good this GL75 sounds :)

Didn't buy it BTW . Gary had it then gave it to Tony who then gave it to me . We're a generous lot up here you know :D

Nice one - it was only a matter of time before you crossed over to the dark side.... :eyebrows:

Just watch that vinyl bug bite! :D

Marco.

P.S Are there links/pics of this momentous occasion? If so, please supply (must've missed it when I was on holiday).

Brian I have both the M44 and M55e and I would say the M55 e is the better of the two.

Uncle Marco has this cartridge and he like it too :)

The M55e doesn't seem to be readily available James . Can the M55e stylus be fitted to the M44-7 body , and if so , is it worth doing ?

Hasn't this been discussed elsewhere? A quick answer would be "Yes" and "Yes". The M44-7 comes with a 0.7mil spherical tipped stylus, so replacing it with an elliptical stylus can only be better. However the M44E has overall a slightly lower specification than the M55E.

 Sorry Barry , I remember now . I seem to be going round in circles a bit . Early stages of dementia methinks
I really need to start taking notes :)
