Well I think this might be a little different to other people's hifi journeys in that I feel that the system I have now has reached my own personal nirvana, & certainly have no plans for further upgrades from now, other than perhaps improving my Firebottle Plus phono & trying different cartridges. But as we all know things just sort of happen & we end up taking another path, but we shall see.

I have always been a vinyl guy, I remember trying to rescue my mums Beatles records from misuse before I was 9 years old, & later on when I was a club DJ on the verge of making a name for myself giving it all up because I hated the damage lugging my records around venues, despite how careful I was with them.

Over the years I have had differing systems, first mainly Japanese gear, then Rega, Linn, Naim all came & by the middle of the '90's I settled on a Michell Orbe full fat, with a SME 309/Ortofon Rohmaan, Unison Research Simply 4/Simply Phono, & Audio Physic Spark speakers. I was very happy with this for some years, until I moved from Sheffield & came down to live in Poole, & it was all put into storage until I got myself sorted.
That took a lot longer than I thought, & instead of leaving the gear until I could use it properly I decided to sell it all & start again when the time was right.
Around a year ago I had a Quad 33/303, with a Funk Firm deck & Ortofon 2M blue, & Rega Ela speakers, & while it was very nice it didn't thrill me, so again I tried a bit of box swapping, & tried variously a Quad 34/306 combo, Quad ESL 57's, Heco Celan 500's, Funk Firm Saffire, Icon Audio Stereo 60 valve amp amongst others. Things were getting better, but still not quite right.

So, once again moving house, in the last few months have collected what is now my finished system. I will probably get shot by the Mrs when she knows I have taken photographs in the house as it has been stripped for refurbishment & decoration, but I put all my gear in the room that is scheduled to be done last so I could use it until we get to that point.

First up is the Origin Live Aurora Mk2, with a Audiomods Classic tonearm & Dynavector MC cart, & a Firebottle Plus phono stage. That is connected to the mighty Triode Corporation 845SE valve amp, & fed to my very recent additions, Art Moderne 6 floorstanding loudspeakers.
I also have a Musical Fidelity X-Ray CD player & X-Dac, sounding very decent but not employed very often.
Oh, I also have an old Dual CT1140 tuner, I do listen to the radio a fair bit & like most I am a sucker for VU meters!

Hi Daniel, thanks for the comments, you are welcome to pop over for a listen, but as the place is a shell at the moment the mrs has put a ban on visitors until we have got it shipshape, shouldn't be too long though!

The quads did hit the spot but once we knew we were moving I was resigned to the fact we just wouldn't have the space for them.

Cheers,
Brook.

Nice looking set up Brook, although those exposed valves would be freeking me out re: any accidents

You know that one bit of kit that you wish you'd never solid - the Triode is it for me.

Looks stunning in its new home.

Ian, when I saw it at yours I couldn't believe you were prepared to let it go & wanted to leave quickly in case you changed your mind!

Thanks Martin, the radio is actually a modern but very good copy of a 1936 Art Deco mirrored radio designed by Walter Dorwin Teague, & called the Spartan Bluebird.
I don't normally hold with copies but as an original is north side of £4k I had to make an exception in this case!
I collect vintage radios, mainly American Jetson types, from the '30's, '40's & early '50's, & this one just looked right at home with the rest of the gear.

Yes it does. Have you got any pics of your vintage radio collection?

I don't at the moment, most of my stuff is still in boxes after our move, but I will post some when they are back on display.

Well, despite me saying at the start of this thread I wouldn't be changing anything in the foreseeable future, I have recently changed my entire vinyl front end, so now I have a Inspire Eclipse SE V2 turntable with a Heed speed controller, a Consonance Opera unipivot 12 inch tonearm, & a Benz Micro Wood SL MC cart.

Early impressions are wow!

I find mine does help audibly so need to keep it. Ive a regenerator in front of the line. Alas you would need it to be accessible for the switch, but they do make excellent distrobution points too, and in your case it fits in very well decor wise... best ive seen actually... its a vert attractive set up

Well, time moves on and things change as they always seem to do, and so yet again I have had a change around. I have never been far away from achieving my ideal sound, but as I am sure many of you will know, making one small change leads to some major ones, and so it has proved again for me.
I was loving my Inspire Eclipse TT and really wanted to keep it, but I had a new passion for old mono Jazz LP's and a growing pile of them to prove it, and I was getting tired of forever having to change cartridges to listen to them. I did toy with the idea of adding another arm to the Inspire, but to my eye it wouldn't have looked good and I was loathe to spoil what is to my eye one of the best looking decks out there, so it meant I have to decide on a second deck to fulfill mono duties. Unfortunately this meant selling the Inspire to raise funds, so I actually had to decide what two decks to choose rather than one.
I had always hankered after an old Lenco deck of some description, so I decided the time was right to use one for my mono records. I had a look around and did a lot of reading, joined Lenco Heaven of course which led me to talk to two knowledgeable guys on there who helped me enormously, so I settled on a GL75 with certain upgrades, a new plinth and a new arm, made and built by Brian from Lenco Heaven. The results were better than I dared hope, and for what is not a lot of money I had a deck that looked right and sounded right. It is no slouch with a stereo cart strapped to it either by the way.
Now to decide on the stereo deck, and having heard my pal Non-Smoking Man Jacks Cranfield Rock I decided one would fit the bill, although I couldn't find a Cranfield quickly so decided on a Townshend Rock Elite, with a view to some modifications along the way. I sold on the Rega RB300 arm that came with it as I was aiming a little higher than that, and replaced it with a little know arm made by a guy i found while doing some reading and learning. It was on sale or return too so I had nothing to lose and gave it a try. Early indications are it is quite a bit better than the Rega, but the TT had already been sent away for modification so I have to wait to hear it in all its glory. It is now ready for collection, so I can't wait to hear it and I will post details in another post once it has bedded in.
I forgot to mention earlier that I had already changed my amplification, a Art Audio Quintet power amp with a lot of modification, and a Art Audio Vinyl One Reference phono preamp, again modified, with an extra line in added so I could connect the Moon Harbor CD player that has also been sneaked into the system, along with a DIY pair of transmission line speakers, based on PMC GB1s but with superior electronics & Sea's drivers and tweeters. I am happy with these but have something standing in the wings should I need them!
So now I am back up to date, have I reached the end finally? I doubt it, I have discovered I quite like tinkering, it is part of the fun for me, although I am very happy for now.

Well spotted but not quite. We have to keep the air vents so I just decorated the vent as well with the same paper as it blends in better.
