Hi :)

Too short :lol:. Welcome to AOS

Whats your first name ? What system do you have/use and what kind of music do you like?

I used to live in Douglas. I liked the island but the winter shut down was very dramatic to say the least.

Well that's short and sweet.

Actually 'selfaddict', do you have a first name? We like to use first names here on AoS - it makes for a more friendly forum.

Also, can you tell us what sort of music you enjoy and what you play it on?

Welcome to AoS anyway!

Hello again to all of you friendly people.

First name is Juha and in deed from Isle of Man.
My system is after very resent big buy and sell activity on and off line:

Luxman L-505u integrated amplifier
Funk Vector TT with Roksan Nima unipoint tonearm(+HD cable) Koetsu Black cartridge(not with me just yet)
Dali Helicon 800 speakers

So purely analog system, I just need to find a nice phono stage for my system next. Luxman has really really nice internal MM / MC phono stage, but after listening my system via my friends The Balanced Audio Technology VK-P5 , I "saw the light" and just wanted moore.

Music taste is "anything goes" -department, all depending the mood myself or my 100 sidepersons happnes to be :-)

Hello Juha,

Thanks for that. Regarding the Balanced Audio Technology VK-P5, Neil ('Dalek Supreme D L') is a fan of BAT designs and I'm sure will concur with your impressions.

Nothing wrong with that, though I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'sidepersons' - Fellow listeners?

Evening Juha. Good system there and I'd love to read more about your turntable experiences and how the Funk with Nima is working. The Koetsu Black should balance it beautifully I reckon...:)

Sorry about that, I mean it as a joke, but jokes do not translate well...

"Sidepersons" = the many different personalities one has, which in some cases can have a very productive or non produtive conversation with each other :lolsign: .

Indeed I am Barry.

The BAT VK5 is very good especially the SE version with BAT super pak capacitors (can be upgraded later on from a standard VK5). These turn up S/H not often, but I have seen a number over the last year. However it works best using the balanced XLR outputs. If your amp has XLR ins then that could be an option.

Hello Dave.
I really like my Funk Vector with Roksan Nima, especially now with Luxman and Dali's. Previously I had Arcam C30 with P1000, which have been sold.

At present I have Audio Technica AT-120e MM cartridge, so I cannot really say a lot what this combo is capable, but hopefully once I get my Koetsu Black I can tell you more about it. I just purchased the cartridge second hand and I expect that I need to send it to The Expert Cartridge Company for full refurbishment, but I see when I get it next week.

Hello Neil.

The model my friend has is the basic VK5 without the six pack. It worked like a treat with my balanced inputs on Luxman.

May a I ask have you listened the VK10, which is their reference model? I would be very interested to hear how you rate this one compared to VK5 with or without the upgrades.

Well we have lived here now for 6 years and I will never get used to this weather :mental: . You are right about the winter shut down, everything goes to hibernation on winter. Bad weather cuts ferries and planes. But what one would not do to fund his very expensive hifi hobby;)

Hi Juha

Yes.....:eyebrows:quite a lot. I own a VK10Se, which is fantastic imho. I took a punt on one about a year and a half ago...unheard and I love it. It works well with my Bat VK31se pre and Bat VK75 power amp. If you look at my system in the gallery section of the forum you will see a photo of it and other bits of my main system. I use it fully balanced both on input and output.

I have to admit that I have not been in any of the local night clubs in six years I have been here, so I cannot truly comment on that. But if it was the hip place then I am sure it is still, because nothing changes here very quicly ;)

Paint drying changes quicker than the Island. I was there at the local Art college which is part of the main college on Home Field road near where the TT races start from every year.

Hello Neil.

Very impressive looking system in deed. My friend is planning to turn his system gradually to full BAT since he bought VK-P5. I think that shows that he really loves the phono stage, and after I heard it in action I want one as well :).

What is your personal opinion, is there any point buing VK-P5 or is it best to wait and see when a "bargain" VK-P10 comes to the market and buy that. I am quite happy to use my Luxman phono stage and wait...

Sadly bargain VK10s don't appear. They are mostly made to order. I don't know if anyone even stocks them. I suspect that even the UK distributor probably does not keep them in stock, but orders them in as he sells them (thats what happened with me). I had to wait 2 months for mine, made for me, using Jensen paper in oil capacitors rather than BAT ones.

Tell your friend to be careful. Bat pres are a bit fussy with what power amplifiers you put them with within the Bat range.

The Vk3 (and its variants only match the VK55 power amplifier.) Its a question of gain from the pre its very high. The VK30/31/51 pre-amplifiers etc match the VK55 quite well , but not as well as with the VK60/75/150 power amplifiers.

I owned a BAT VK55 for awhile but found that with the Bat VK31se pre I have that it just didn't drive very well. The BAT VK3I pre was a better match from a speaker driving point of view but not as good a pre. The VK31se with a VK75 was a much better match. However using a VK3I with the VK75 gave way to much volume. I can't get past first few notches on the volume control and my speakers like a bit of power. So not as good a match...go figure.

Hi Juha,
Welcome to AoS.
I'd be getting the most out of the system you have (or will have once you get your Koetsu sorted out). I've a feeling it will sound far better than you expect & it may satisfy you for a good time before you really feel the need to change it.

Cheers

Hello Chris and thanks.

I think you are right I am just too impatient sometimes. I need to give the system time to "burn in" and see what it really is capable giving to me. Dalis and Luxman are only 2 weeks old, so I really cannot expect too much at this point.

I have noticed a huge difference with Dalis and the Luxman allready after 2 weeks of using CD player to burn both in, about 6-7 hours/day. The sound has transformed from being a bit muddy to very clear/clean and bass has become much more articulate as well. This is what I am after, very revealing uncoloured sound.

When I bought Dalis, I was told that Helicons really need up to 250 hours before they start revealing what they are capable of and they never actually stop improving. So I am very interested to see what future will bring to me.

And I cannot more highly recommend Supra Sword speaker cables. I just love the sound what they are delivering, again very clean/clear/uncoloured compared to my old chord Carnival Silver Plus Bi-Wire cables. Chord were not bad, but not in the same league.

Just to qualify some of the things I said earlier:
You might well lust after some exotic US marque, but don't forget, Luxman really do know how to build gear...............and I'm not saying that the BAT stuff is better or worse............but before BAT were even a twinkle in anyone's eye, Luxman were clanging together some stuff that is still highly desirable - even today and it still performs way beyond the norm.

I own classic US gear (Levinson & ARC), classic Japanese gear (Accuphase) and relatively modern Japanese gear (Accuphase again), so I have no blind hatred of US stuff - but I do put Luxman into the same box as Accuphase. Oh, & I think you'll love the Koetsu Black - I've owned 3 of those!

Peel is lovely in deed and nobody makes better smoked bacon than the old smokehouse near the peel harbour. It is just mindblovingly good fried and mixed with good pasta.
