Hi
After an age away from hifi (though not music) I've started to renew both my interest and equipment! Still using and enjoying the speakers, amps and CD player that I last used 'professionally' as a hi-fi critic in 1989. But have added a NAS drive and streamer to bring me someway up to date. I'm currently ripping my last vinyl before saying goodbye to my turntable and am covering this is a blog at:

Interesting blog and you digitisation mission looks like a proper undertaking. I only got so far with mine before returning to the black stuff.

(Just looked at you blog and yes you did review for Hi Fi Sound and for Hi Fi Answers! I devoured all those magazines then and thought you were one of the very few who were not carried away by the whole absurd Linn/Naim infatuation prevalent at the time! We are indeed honoured to have you as a member.)

That's an interesting choice in equipment you have there, the rather nice MC202 being an old favourite of mine (wish I still had one).

Hi Geoff - I've very wide tastes but have always kept away from C&W and trad/big band jazz game for almost anything else. My classical taste have downsized and I more often listen to chamber works and string quartets. I much prefer period instrument recordings and have been delighted to discover bands like Les Siecles and Anima Eterna Brugge working through 20th century music with same historical approach as if it were Bach or Telemann. I'm re-educating my ears as to what is considered good mastering and working my way through Bob Katz's Honor Roll of Dynamic Records from www.digido.com which is throwing up some fascinating sounds and amazing music - recommended.

Me too! If I had to describe my music tastes to anyone who asked, my reply was always "Everything apart from country and western and big-band jazz". Nowadays I would add rap, grunge and thrash metal to the list.

Well I do 'flirt' with the edges of country and western: Linda Ronstadt and Norah Jones, and I do like some early Louis Armstrong and King Oliver, who played in jazz bands.

I can't stand country and western! It has to be my least favourite genre. I wouldn't class Norah Jones as C&W though, even though she has covered at least one C&W track that I know of. In fact she 's fairly hard to categorise I would say... and I like her music very much. Some music I have polarised opinions on could be said to be related, by some anyway! I love big band jazz ie Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and indeed most forms of jazz...except trad jazz which I can't stand!
I also can't stand thrash metal but then again I love some of the older metal bands, Sabbath, Purple etc. It was done with tune, melody etc back then (which is my number 1 priority for any music). Same with soul music. I love most of the classic Motown etc stuff but almost all of what would be termed soul/R&B today I hate with a vengeance! It strikes me that they actually try to remove as much tune and melody from it as possible and then try and make it the audio equivalent of being smothered by melted chocolate... if that makes any sense to anyone!
Edit: Oh yes and hello David!! I also remember your writings in the mags with nostalgia.
