The big Radford is still playing up and I have guests here for the the next week.

Anyone got a chunky valve or solid state power amp that could power the Tannoy HPDs, not too far from me?

Ideal would be a Bill Beard KT88 or somesuch, maybe a Lyngdorf, something like that?

Not looking for anything too pricey as it's a stopgap really, say £500-ish?

Happy to buy but if there's anything I could borrow for a week or two that would be even better.

On the bright side, might be a chance to experiment a bit.

I could loan you my IncaTech Claymore MKII integrated ( 100W pc ) which has way more grunt than my TQ Claymore lol, if that was any good ? Would have to be posted though.

Mike.

Shame about the Radford, they are usually very reliable. Do you know what's wrong?

My Radford STA25 III has not really been touched, only output valves swapped to preserve the original Mullards. Bought the amp about 1975.

That said, it will probably go bang soon.

Quad 303 or 405-2? They are relatively cheap and reliable.

Getting very good sound using this into BBC Rogers LS3/6, also tried it with HPD 315's, good, but not the power you want:

I wonder if there is any cheaper, new, good quality amplifier. Power supply is an from an old laptop, 16V, and I have glued on an additional heatsink, a old processor heatsink from a PC.

Third time it's blown an EF184. Something not right that needs tracking down. I'm sure whatever it is won't be a big drama but I suspect the job to track down the issue might take a while.

Going to Will for the repair?

EF184's are a particularly fragile valve... but very good.

Off to Valvebloke/Ampregen, who is in easy driving distance thankfully.

I have a new consignment of Philips Miniwatt (UK production) en route from Italy to replace the Mazdas that are in it, it's possible (though perhaps unlikely) it's a bad batch.

Hello Tom,

I have several SS power amps I would be willing to loan you:

Quad 520f (135W/channnel) (XLR inputs, Neutrik 'Speakon' outputs)
Quad 303 (45W/channel) 4 pin DIN input, though I have a DIN to RCA lead)
Quad 405-2 (50W/channel), two available one with RCA input connectors
Quad 405-2 monoblocks (100W/channel). RCA input connector.

Problem is getting them to you. If you are willing to collect them (and return them when finished), PM me.

Regards

So you have the limiters in your 405-2's?

So you have the limiters in your 405-2's?

I have three of them. One that I'm using as a 'spare' amp is fitted with limiters (I use Quad 57s), the second is also fitted with limiters. The third is a heavily modified 405-1 and is also fitted with limiters. I will have to check the second amp to see if the limiters can be removed; depending on the circuit version the limiting was done either through a (removable) resistor or a pair of zener diodes.

The MK1 was a plug in resistor for each channel, as you say, The Mk2 was a plug in link, if my memory is right.

Got a 100 watt Luxman L-435 but it is a drive to Bristol. And to return it however it is also for sale.

Lots of knobs and an ace phono stage to experiment with.

Na ... forget all this. Entertain your guests with a banjo singalong. There's nothing like a few rousing choruses of Camptown Races to make a lasting impression ime. :D
