Croft 25R (Modified/Upgraded) Pre-amp

Up for sale is my Croft 25R pre-amp.

It is just 3 years old and is in excellent condition.

This pre-amplifier was returned to Glenn Croft for modification soon after being purchased. Glenn upgraded the line stage to a cathode follower circuit designed for use with the 12BH7 (or E80CC and ECC99) valve. The main benefit being to reduce the excessive gain of the standard version and to better enable it to drive both valve and low impedance solid state power amps. The standard 25R does not work well with low impedance solid state power amps which is what I originally had at the time. As I understand things Glenn also prefers the 12BH7 valve which he also uses in the 25RS version.

The 25R incorporates a superb onboard phono stage which I understand is a slightly improved version of the standard RIAA phono stage which is available as a free standing separate component retailing at £500. The onboard phono stage avoids the need for a separate box, use of a powered socket and potentially expensive interconnects.

The pre-amp will be supplied with the original unbranded 12BH7 valve originally fitted by Glenn and the normal Raytheon 85A2 regulation valve together with a Westinghouse 1958 black plate D getter 12BH7 and Mullard 85A2 regulation valve both of which have more recently been purchased and installed and which have improved performance further.

The pre-amplifier will be supplied in its original box.

This is a stunningly good preamp at a very reasonable price. It would cost double that new with all the work that has been done to it and bridges the gap between the 25R and 25RS.

This is the preamp I have and I am more than happy with how it sounds. I think this is the sweet spot in the Croft range and massive value for money at the price John is selling it for!

I must confess to being a bit surprised this hasn't sold because I thought it was very competitively priced bearing in mind its age, condition and the quality on offer. However, I have noticed a number of other well priced Croft items that have been advertised recently each of which seem to have struggled to attract buyers.

I'm not sure whether it is just Croft equipment or whether the second hand market is just generally flat at the moment? :confused:

I can echo that, I think it's a combination of summer holidays, and probably most people who might be interested already have one. It's an excellent amp, the right person will come along

It's a MM phonostage but would work very well with a SUT.

Yes, further to Rexton's answer there would be a need for a SUT or head amp if using a low output MC cartridge.

I used both a Cinemag and Lundahl based SUT with my Lyra Delos and Hana SL MC cartridges with great success. I also used one of Firebottle's 2000 MC Head Amp's (check out the information in the Trade Impressions section) which also provided superb results at only £150 brand new. Best of all it's battery powered so doesn't take up a mains socket or need a power cord.

Plenty of positive reports and information about this head amp on this forum.
