The last time I owned a turntable was around 1989 ( I think ) . When CD emerged and promised audio Nirvana I jumped at the opportunity to own one of these wonderful , convenient , silver disc players . I used CD until I joined this forum six years ago and discovered file based audio with the help of Gary ( gazjam on here ) . I'e been reasonable happy with the SQ , however , I've discovered that I've spent the last 35 years or so trying to get my system to sound more '' analogue '' . Because of this I've been a bit disenchanted with the whole '' hifi '' thing and haven't been listening to much music lately .
I've been watching with interest the resurgence of vinyl and all things analogue the last couple of years and developments in the systems of me old buddies Gary and Tony , who have both gone down the analogue route . So , to cut a long story short I picked up something last night and it's kinda reignited my interest and awakened the tinkerer/engineer in me . This little beauty has been doing the rounds in '' Scottishmafia '' land . Gary originally owned it , but decided to go down a different route . He gave it to Tony , who also decided it wasn't for him , and now it has arrived in my gaff . It's sitting on 4 cans and I've just fitted a mains cable to it and it's spinning away as I write this .
Pictures below :D

This Goldring Lenco GL75 is in absolutely beautiful condition and everything appears to be working as it should . It has a Shure M44-7 cartridge body fitted and I ordered a new stylus for it today . I have a new ( old original ) plinth coming today or tomorrow ( thanks Geoff ) and I'm planning to keep it as original and unmolested as I can . This is going to be a steep learning curve for me so any suggestions from all you analogue guys on AOS will be more than welcome as I've never done this kind of work before .
So as I stated in the title of this thread it's '' back to the future '' for me and I'm really looking forward to spinning some vynil again . Thanks to all those who have helped already and to those who I know will help in the future .
I joined Lenco Heaven the other day . What a mine of information on this turntable :)

That looks to be in very good nick Brian.

The Lenco Gl75 is a very good TT to launch yourself back into vinyl. I may well bring mine up to MIBO.

Interesting you have decided to go back to vinyl, same happened to me 3 years ago and now I can't go back to digital in any form. I find the whole vinyl experience extremely satisfying musically and it reaches other parts of my brain digital just can't do. After 3 years of buying loads of vinyl I am finding the older analogue recorded stuff the best!

Next you will be buying a valve amp Brian!

Yup , thanks James . This is a fine example mate .
I've been hankering for something and I hope this will fill the void . I've already had a valve amp and had to get rid of it because we started to watch our 3 year old niece who made a bee-line for the amp which was lit up . So , unfortunately it had to go :(

I made an '' Ikea Lack '' cradle to make the GL67 easier to work on . I can now work on the top or the bottom by turning it either way . I also fitted some nice new MS Audio silver plugs to the phono leads and a nice new mains cable .

There was a Shure M44-7 cartridge body already fitted to the arm and as I thought it rude not to try it I found a replacement stylus on Ebay for £13 .
I'm now awaiting the arrival of some circlip pliers and some parts so I can continue.
I had the platter spinning for a few hours yesterday and all seems well , although I have no way of checking the speed yet .
I might go to Tesco or Asda , or the charity shops where I live this morning and buy my first album in 35 years :D
Anyone got any albums they would like to sell for a reasonable price ? :)
Or swapsies for a nice set of interconnects .

Hi Brian,

I have the M44-7, also came with my Lenco GL75 - this cartridge has some balls(high ouput) however with a replacement stylus it should boogie nicely. As you may be aware I have the M55e which is a wonderful match with the Lenco tonearm and sounds sonically superb with a JICO SAS stylus.

I would also recommend the AT95 cartridge with the Lenco, I tried one with mine and it sounded great and is cheap as chips. T

Think your going to have fun and enjoy this experience mate.:)

PS - I have the MS Audio plugs fitted to mine now and they perform well.

They are a superb deck to work on and you really appreciate the fantastic quality engineering that went into them. Imagine how much they would be if someone tooled up to make them again!

Are you going to strip and re grease the motor? If it is running silent and no problems I would leave it, unless you like messing which I am sure you do! It can be tricky getting them to run quiet again after when reinstalling them in conjunction with the idler wheel. Obviously if it's noisy then it's a must to regrease.

brian2957
27-07-2016, 07:59
The motor is running beautifully and seems very quiet James so I mat leave well alone for the moment . I'm not sure about the bearing , so I may have a look at that when the circlip pliers arrive .
Agreed regarding the engineering in the GL75 . I've been very impressed with it so far and yes , I've wondered how much it would cost to produce today . The old 'uns are the best eh! :wheniwasaboy::D

The bearing is very easy to sort, just be careful not to loose the ball bearing at the bottom of the shaft. I would use lithium grease rather than oil to regrease it once you have polished the shaft.

walpurgis
27-07-2016, 09:45
I've neve understood this 'polishing' of the bearing shaft thing. All it does is take metal off. The shaft and bearing already have established wear patterns where they contact. These are best left alone in my view. Attempting to remove signs of bearing contact is unnecessary.

There are philips screws under the lever that can be loose ed for fine adjustments. One for each speed.
If its way out i would check the idler is in correct position. Sometimes if not fixed tight they can slip on shaft

Welcome to the vinyl side Brian.

My GL75 was originally running slow due to the ball bearing being missing from the bottom of the shaft

Are you getting any wow, this could confirm that there is a lot of drag due to a missing ball.

Once I fitted a new ball bearing it was fine and I had to adjust the speed settings to slower positions.

I stripped the main bearing last night and it was dry as a bone . The shaft and bearings look OK so I lubricated it using a mix of EP80 and STP . I had a quick listen last night and all seems well .
The motor seems to be running very nicely . It's very quiet and tolerances seem to be OK so I'm not sure whether to strip it and relube or leave well alone .
The only problem I have is setting the speed using the strobe . I'm at the end stop of the fine adjustment and I'm not quite up to speed according to the strobe disc . Not sure what's going on here , I think the idler shaft may be bent .
To be honest I'm really surprised at how good this deck sounds and it it doesn't get any better than this I'll be mighty happy :D

While sercicing the main bearing of the GL67 a couple of things ocurred to me . Firstly sitting the relube oil in a cup and into some hot water changes the viscosity of the oil and makes it easier to work with . Secondly a little grease placed into the plastic cover which fits onto the bottom of the bearing helps to prevent the oil from running out of the bottom of the bearing . Just my 2p worth :)

I know

I changed the v blocks tonight . The old ones came out in little pieces . I gave everything a good clean and installed the new ones . Quite a fiddly job but well worth it . Initial impressions are very good . Unfortunately I can't crank the system up tonight to have a good listen
There's always tomorrow :eyebrows:
These instructions are excellent .

Did you use Desmo blocks Brian?

brian2957
31-07-2016, 07:42
Yes I did James . Problem is I don't know what's good and what's bad , these seemed decent and they fit nicely .
I thought the v blocks in the GL75 were OK as there didn't seem to be excess play . The old one came out in tiny bits
I haven't had a chance to have a proper listen yet , but initial impressions are very good :)

Great fun the Lenco learning as you go:) Sounds like your V blocks were knackered if they were in bits. I took mine out and they looked perfect but when I replaced them with the Desmo V blocks I noticed a lot less play in the tonearm pivot and the sound was way better!

Did you manage to figure out the protractor I sent you. That is set up for the Lenco dimensions from spindle to pivot and will allow you to adjust cartridge overhang spot on. Essential to get the best sound.:)

brian2957
31-07-2016, 11:01
Aye the v blocks seem to have done the trick .
The protractor is for another day James ( soon ) :)
I have to say that I'm thoroughly enjoying working on this cracking piece of hifi kit and listening to the fruits of my labours :D

I've only got one LP though and I'm driving the wife mad playing it on '' repeat ''
Anyone got any '' doubler'' albums they would like to sell , or swapsies for a nice set of RCA cables :D

Possibly the thick as Molasses Bearing oil is creating drag ... thereby reducing axle speeds.
Try some Sewing machine oil as experiment ?

Hi Brian,

stick one of these in your M44-7 or M55.

Bit pricey but will give you stunning sound on the Lenco!

Well I've done all I want to do to the GL75 for the moment . It's been quite a steep learning curve and I've had to pick a few peoples brains on the way . Particular thanks goes to Geoff ( walpurgis ) and James ( jimbo ) for their help ( and patience ) .I bought my first two albums , since I gave up vinyl in 1989 , in Glasgow yesterday and I'm just sitting back and really enjoying the music . Here's a list of what I've done so far :
Fitted a new stylus to the Shure body already fitted to the GL75 arm .
Stripped the centre bearing and relubed .
Replaced the v blocks .
Replaced the tonearm cable and plugs .
Lubricated all linkages .
Spent some time restoring the wooden base Geoff kindly sold to me .
Fitted a new lid .
Fitted oak cone feet .
Spent some time learning how to set things up and making adjustments accordingly .
Bought a couple of favourite albums . Poured meself a nice coffee and sat back and enjoyed the music :D

Just a thought. Lift off lids have a habit of sliding about.

I use these to keep them in place: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Black-Plastic-Safety-Eyes-6mm-8mm-9mm-10mm-12mm-Amigurumi-Soft-Toy-Teddy-Bear-/201634903722?var=&hash=item2ef26076aa:m:mv0VOEGAYmJCN42lm4gg7QQ

Just drill a suitably sized small hole and push them in. One in each corner, just within the lid edge.

brian2957
06-08-2016, 09:53
Thanks mate . There's tiny little rubber feet on each corner so no sliding here :D

Thanks for sharing your adventure Brian. Great reading and great to see the support of the AOS group. I did the same as you about 3-4 years ago, after being away from vinyl since 1993. I just love listening to vinyl and now have 200-300 albums.

I'm not sure that I am enough of a wordsmith to describe why, but there is an emotional reward from looking at albums and listening to vinyl that digital can't match. I haven't played my music server since I got my first turntable 3-4 years ago!

Enjoy,

Don

13-08-2016, 07:40
Thanks Don , I know what you mean . Gary has taken my digital reproduction pretty much as far as it could go without spending a fortune . I've been watching with interest the return to vinyl many people are making . The GL75 was languishing in Tonys cellar as he had decided to buy a Rega turntable . He said I could take it away and see if I could do something with it and it's been surprisingly easy to get the GL75 up and running . This was made much easier with the help Geoff ( walpurgis ) James ( jimbo ) and Andrew ( rexton ) on AOS , so thanks to them . LencoHeaven has also been a fantastic source for information .
I know what you mean by the '' emotional connection '' which vinyl music reproduction brings . I now find digital a little bit '' dry '' in comparison . The art work on LPs is the icing on the cake isn't it :)

Welcome to the dark side, daftee! :mex:

:interesting:

You've chosen a nice T/T to begin your journey with - and yes, you *will* be on a journey (a nice one), trust me ;)

Looking forward to hearing the beast next time I'm up, mate. To top up yer fuzzy warbles I'll bring some doublers and bits and pieces with me of music I think you'll like, which is surplus to my requirements, and that you're welcome to have - and all of it will be minty.

Smart move running a vinyl source along with your streaming set-up, which will open up a whole new world of music for you. Get along to some local car booties.

Enjoy!

Nice you really enjoying the deck Brian and the new rediscovered world of vinyl. My journey has been all consuming over the last three years as the vinyl bug bit hard!

Yes , the GL75 has taken up a lot of my spare time James . In some ways it has been a bit of a labour of love as I learned about this turntable and began to appreciate the engineering involved .This has been rewarded with some real musical '' satisfaction '' and I've really enjoyed the journey so far . Thanks for all your help mate :)

How's the new stylus sounding Brian, getting some nice sound out of your growing vinyl collection?

brian2957
03-09-2016, 16:28
Yes it's sounding very good indeed James . I really like the SQ of the Shure cartridges and will at some point upgrade to the JICO SAS . I intend to make some more upgrades to the GL75 while maintaining the general integrity of the turntable . Any upgrades I make will be incremental and reversible . I will post here when they are done .
