View Full Version : Which Radio Station do you listen to?
I have the radio on in our lab everyday for about 8 hours and the station most preferred by all of us is Planet Rock however as they have changed the DAB signal it has now been impossible to obtain it.
Every now and then when we wanted a complete change we listened to Classic FM - nice and calm with a bit of Smooth extra thrown in.
Myself I like radio 3 and 4 although I do pick and choose on these stations.
Local radio can be utterly dull. Listened to radio Shropshire the other day and they spent nearly half and hour talking about the bus timetable from Bridgnorth to somewhere - I know this is a public broadcast/local information service but crikey it was dull!
So general consensus is that we club together and get a cheap Internet radio - any suggestions welcome.
Any insights or opinions on what you listen too would be interesting or not?:)
I listen exclusively to Radio 6 (which is DAB only), or Radio 4.
100% Analogue
Mostly Radio 4, occasionally Classic FM. Whenever I tune into Radio 3, it's bloody opera!

That's exactly what I do when opera comes on. For me best programmes on radio 3 are the Saturday jazz and Late Junction!
Most likely radio Scotland on bbc, although its rare. Mostly radio Paradise i guess, but no radio lately

Think so, yes, James. I get it on my tablet and either use my thunderstorm cover..sometimes send stuff via chromecast to the stereo. Not the highest bit rate but still sounds pretty good, and music is great. Not sure if r p ,s ap can do casting at moment.. Theve been doing a beta on and off. Need to check. Theres another on that does thats good too..
Had to check..yes you can cast it from tunein radio app. Still doesnt seem to work with RP's own app but sounds good with tunein
Smooth FM for me as it reminds me of how Radio 2 used to be in the 1980s.
BBC local stations are all boring chatter as they can't afford to play much music or employ anyone with anything interesting to say.

Classic FM, when driving,
Radio 3 & 4 driving and at home,
Radio 2 some evenings ( Jamie collum,etc).
Radio 6 in the past, great music, but some of the presenters got on my nerves...

At the moment we are listening to smooth extra DAB -passes the time of day nicely.

Not plugged the tuner in for years, so that sort of rules me out! :)
Proper FM radio - Radio 2
Internet "radio" - BBC 6 Music, KEXP and occasionally Planet Rock.
KEXP do some superb recorded sets with artists available on youtube. Sound quality is top notch.

Radio 2 all day every day basically... Planet Rock when at me marra's place.
Tandberg TR-2055 receiver, Philips CD850 (with home made discrete op amps) and Mordaunt Short Festivals is the workshop system, which is responsible for most of my radio listening.
Somehow I find radio 2 very irritating - not sure why exactly - it's just so blahh.

I'm not sure I know the exact definition of "blahh" :lol:
It has its problems yes but for a station to have on for hours everyday it suits my needs.. worst points? For me anyway the Elaine Page show on a Sunday, I can't stand her and the music from musicals she plays is even worse so the radio usually has to go off from 1 - 3 on a Sunday afternoon. The Organist Entertains.... bizarre! An hour of Wurlitzer music etc in this day and age...
Evenings are particularly good though, there's a Blues show, a jazz show, a country show (some like it apparently), a folk show and good music from dj's after these... I have been turned on to new bands by these programs so they have their uses, Mario Biondi being the latest from Jamie Cullums show.
Radio 6, Paradise Radio and Planet Rock all very good on digital radio but too much chew on... FM for me. I have a mains portable on as well in the bathroom to fill out the sound as I move around the place (I hate it when I miss out on some important part of the news or what that last track was 'cos I've gone to make a coffee and I can't quite hear it above the kettle etc) and my only access to digital radio is via PC and DAC...

This exactly. That show is like a nail down a blackboard.
Smooth play all the good stuff from the best decade for music with very little chat. It may be 2016 out there but in my house it is 1977.

We have had smooth on all day, it keeps us kind of calm when all the nonsense of work is going on around us.
It does feel like 1977 but my life is already stuck there!
There are worse places to be stuck ;)

Radio 2 in the week first thing, or Planet Rock if Evans is too grating.
Classic FM at weekends, nice and relaxing.
Later in the morning we change to Planet Rock, Shirley is a fan of Steve Wright in the afternoons, but if I am in the workshop I usually have Planet Rock on.
Love the rhythm and blues show hosted by Paul Jones on Monday evening on Radio 2.

I only really listen to 6music, generally in the car for an hour to work and back each day. It just seems to play a mix of music I know and enjoy whilst also throwing up new bands / music / styles of music for me to explore.
It has a few djs who annoy me but on the odd occasion I've tried commercial stations or heaven forbid bbc2 I quickly think things could be far worse and go back to 6music.
6 Music - Don Letts on Sunday night, and RadMac weekday afternoons

BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4 exclusively.
My partner likes to listen to LBC for the political debate phone-ins, but it often just annoys me. Anything else such as Heart, Smooth, etc. I just find so anodyne I stop listening. Used to listen to Jazz FM, but again I got bored with it. If I want to find out about new jazz music I might tune in to Jamie Cullem's programme on Radio 2. And 'Late Junction' on Radio 3 is great for world music and modern 'left field' classical music.
At night I might tune into the World Service on AM.

I like Radio 3 occasionally - Late Junction is a good show. Radio 4 pretty regularly, 6 Music - I really like both of Stuart Maconie's shows and Don Lett's show. And I'll have occasional dip into Resonance FM.

It was Radio Paradise introduced Agnes Obel to me... And so many more artists whose albums or tickets I've ended up buying.
It is probably my main source of new music ideas Jim. I am a paying supporter and also use their amazon links to buy stuff which helps keep them running, independent, listener supported and most of all advert free.
I also love the mobile app as you can rate the songs and comment on the playlist as you go. After quite a few years of listening it is interesting to see all the things I've rated if I ever run short of inspiration.
