The dark web

Has anyone used it? Until recently I thought
It was something only criminals used but apparently journalists and charities also use it, so are you willing to fess up to using it? Obviously if you're a bit dodgy you can keep shtum:eyebrows:

I've read about it but never accessed it. Don't really have the need and it seems to involve some level of computer geekery to do it 'safely'. But as you say the bulk of it is non-dodgy it is just material that cannot be accessed by a search engine for whatever reason. That's my no doubt limited understanding, anyway.

Martin, that's pretty much my understanding, I guess the secrecy aspect got me interested, at the same time I'd rather not come across nasty stuff:scratch:

Grant,yes dangerous is also my thinking, flickin TV and the one show had a journalist that used it, he reckoned it was a US government project initially

As far as I'm aware it's just part of the greater web, but not accessible via 'usual' searches. Not had the need, but 'Tor' browser can be used I think. That one has US military origins if I recall.

US Navy created TOR so I wouldn't be surprised if US Military had something to do with Dark Web too

I've heard of it, usually in relation to paedophile activity. How would you find it, if you wanted to - do you Google 'dark web' ?

You can't access it through Google, that is why it is the dark web. It was mentioned earlier what you have to use but I've forgotten already which is probably why I'm not making a fortune in I.T

It is a computer geek thing I think. Like 'ripping' - I mean it is just copying so why not call it that? Everything has to have an exciting name because the reality is mostly desperately tedious.

There is really nothing inherently dark or hidden about it. It's a media hype thing, calling it that.

As far as I am aware the dark net as they call it is simply websites that do not have a DNS name for them. ie they only have the IP address, no symbolic name. All websites have the IP address, most the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx format and now with IPv6 the addresses are longer to cope with the vastly larger number of computers in existence now.

To locate the thing you want to look for say www.google.com they have domain name servers to convert that to the IP address the computers actually use as addresses.

Dark web is simply computers without the corresponding DNS registrations to allow that to happen. Could be loads of reasons why that would be. No necessarily criminal, underhand or fishy. But obviously if you run illegal sites then I imagine applying for DNS registration with the government (or governing bodies who would turn the info over to the law enforcement agencies) is probably a no-no. Hence they are on "dark web"

I got the Tor browser, had a look, didn't really understand things so came out, never looked again.
