Latest news says there is an attempted takover of Turkey by the military. This could get interesting in a hurry.
Times Israel seems to have the story but can't get on the website.

Government say they are still in charge, reports of gun fire, military say they have take the country over.
Just what the world needs, more trouble. Feel sorry for the people of Turkey and any holiday makers there. Hope these military people are not militant types.

The outcome is obviously unpredictable. But the Turks could do worse than see the back of Erdogan. He's a very vindictive, pompous and arrogant prick.

No doubt the government would say that, but if the military are doing this collectively and are organised, they would no doubt succeed. Who'd stop them?
Not sure there is much between the sides , but there has certainly been a lot of accusations of corruption on the current Govt

News saying its a faction and not the whole of the military. News reporting some military and police fighting rebels. Russia now flexing its muscles issuing statements re its nationals. The martial law order is being ignored.

Erdogan seems to have done a bunk and can't be found. Predictable. He'll probably turn up in Paraguay or somewhere similar to live off the few billions he's squirrelled away.

Doubt it Neil. They'll be a small force and in the face of total military domination will capitulate.
Apparently a military helicopter from the area Erdogan was thought to be in has just been shot down. Maybe he was in it (with a bit of luck). The Turks deserve better than him. He's a nasty piece of work.
Hopefully it will be decided one wayor other soon before too many are killed. I am not qualified to say who is the better tbh.

According to Reuters it was a rebel helicopter, not a Government one. That as maybe but he was elected and democracy being overridden is not good.

Doesn't Greece have compulsory national service. Pretty sure they did which is why so many of their young men leave the country to study and work.
If so potentially a lot of guys trained for combat they can call up? Perhaps any Greek members on here can keep me right.

That's what the Italians thought in 1941. They took a beating from the Greeks and the Germans had to bring up 25 panzer divisions to sort it out, delaying the attack on Russia.

Yes, Greece still has compulsory military service. At current reckoning, the strength of the Greek army alone, active personnel-wise stands at roughly 90.000 - it jumps up to c. 250.000 when active reserves are called in.
