Yes to everything except that even if you do not bring any kit you will no doubt get a chance to play whatever music you bring (if you are pushy enough ;) )

Well actually I was looking for software to play back on my Nagra IV-S. The maximum spool size it can take is 7". All I have recorded are some radio plays, which I don't think would be suitable for the bake-off.

I don't know Ali, all I can say is the equalisation is CCIR. I've used Agfa PEM368 tape and some Memorex tape, but the great majority of my tape stock is Pyral on metal spools sold by Ferrograph.

I don't like rules so there are no hard and fast ones, thought we'd just kick off and see how it goes. Lots of kit to hear, but we do have all day.

Those of you who are going to want to eat at the venue, I will need to know in advance what you want to eat and when, broadly speaking. I have to let them know so they can have enough food in stock and when the chef needs to be there, as he isn't usually on all day. There is a menu on the hotel's site. It is cheap and cheerful. If anyone wants to eat somewhere posher there is a 'gastro pub' about a mile away that is open all day and is about 3 and a half stars on my scale. (They always overcook my steak but the surroundings are pleasant and the service is good).

Anyways, if you want to eat at the venue please PM me with food and a rough time, by next weekend, latest. (This doesn't apply to breakfast if you are staying overnight, just day/evening food).

I'm not sure what I'm doing yet, mate, food wise. I'll probably just have whatever's going at the venue (I'm not fussy), and take things from there. However, if on the day I feel like it, I may go to the gastro pub. I enjoyed it the last time we went. I'd also be willing to taxi folk there and back to the venue, if folks want a drink :)

Btw, I think I'll probably also go on the Friday, as I'll enjoy the 'setting up' day as much as the main day itself, [I can easily shoot home afterwards, as the venue is only 40 mins away from me], so on the Friday (4th) do you want me to pick you up at home and take you to the venue, along with the kit you're bringing, and if so, what time?

Just to confirm Ken's (QWIN) edit on the other thread that I'll be able to come to this now - my son plays basketball at u/16s national level so has games most Saturday's, but that weekend his game has been moved to the Sunday.

Really looking forward to it - loads of gear I've never heard before and as long-time open baffle fan especially keen to hear Ali's speakers. Not planning on bringing any kit, but will bring some CDs and/or files if there will be a computer there.

Do it Oliver. It'll be an education for those who have not heard this excellent TT/arm combination. Shame you don't have a good MC to bung in it yet though. Nothing wrong with the Acutex, but the 774 really comes alive with a Decca or ZYX :).

I think it is 1200 on the Friday. Although as I understand it once breakfast is over the room is then vacant so they may not be too bothered about an exact time.

They won't mind but I'm not 100% about it from a security angle. We'll have to play that by ear. There is 24 hour reception so someone is about all night, but even so, might be a risk. Also we have to leave some tables set up so they can serve breakfast on Saturday morning.

Martin, I appreciate why it might be necessary, but I don't do ordering food in advance, as I'm the type who eats what I fancy when I'm there. If the venue can't cater for that, then I guess I've got no option but to eat somewhere else, probably at the gastro pub.

It's a bit of bizarre/restrictive arrangement, TBH, mate. Most places give you a menu and you order what you want when you're there..... What happens on every other day when the place is open and punters want something to eat - do they have to order it in advance?

What if its passing trade, and folks don't know that they're even going to be there in the first place? ;)

Marco: They just want to make sure they have enough food and staff to cover demand. They don't want to disappoint anyone. They do a carvery on Sunday but they are not open all day every day for food. It isn't easy to find somewhere that has decent accommodation and parking that is within affordable limits. Okay so maybe I should have booked the Holiday Inn and laid on a hog roast but maybe we do that next time.

Anyone worried about food I assure you there are a dozen sources of all manner of food within 5 minutes walk of the venue. It's not in the middle of nowhere.

Food is on from 1800 to 2100 Friday and Saturday, but they will do food in the day on Saturday should anyone want anything. They do have plenty of food in, they just wanted some advance notice in case 20 people all wanted a steak or something. Also checked the plug sockets and their should be sufficient. I will bring some extension blocks along too.

One rule is strictly no bringing your own booze. They are well stocked and not expensive so shouldn't be an issue but their policy is that if anyone is caught bringing in their own liquor they will bar everyone immediately, party over. So please no-one do that:)

My food choices are always spontaneous, and generally last minute, based on mood or how tempting something appears on the day, so the thought of having to decide in advance, about a week ahead what I'm going to eat in a pub, fills me with about as much excitement as I'd have planning every meal at home in advance...

You know those daftees who, when they go shopping, buy 7 days worth of food in the one hit, and have already decided what they're going to eat on each day - or worse, the 'creatures of habit crew' who MUST have a certain meal on a certain day, because that's what's always happened! :doh:

Anyway, it's sorted.

It is STILL a mess up there. Must have been one hell of a pile up.

Many moons ago I was working for Dunlop in Coventry. I left work at 3pm on a Friday and got home to Bristol at 11pm. MASSIVE crash. M5 closed for hours and all A roads off of it stationary.

I've heard the 57s quite a few times now at Tonys place and I absolutely love them . I'm sure they'll impress at MIBO .

I've also heard Alis R2R ( in fact it was the first one I had heard for many years ) and was absolutely stunned at the SQ .

It looks like there's a lot of fantastic gear there already , and much more to come by the looks of things .

Having read and heard about the Quads but never seen in the flesh, I was surprised to see the actual size of them against the rest of the equipment, so the photos really help in that respect.

I'm laid up and a bit deaf as a result so can't really comment on kit but some really interesting stuff there. Not your run of the mill collection of bits that's for sure.

Thought the massive open baffle system was superb with massive scale and presence, the little t amp playing through the regas threw a nice airy image out, tight and energetic.

My head cleared a bit and I got to hear the JBLs.... which i really liked....very interesting .

Just got almost back but stopped at the local. Jerry will be glad to know the Apart Champ turned out to be a great ESL 57 driver. Made some damn fine noises with that and a modified Rega TT plus a Kin preamp.

I think the platter material used on the modded Rega TT is seriously good. In fact for some obscure reason I think that was the most enlightening aspect of the whole event. For me, that is.

Ok thanks Grant, as said I'm sure same pics will be on here soon with a good write up etc. Not just a few photos on Facefart. I kind of do the same on Facefriend with work, post some pics for friends to see, then same pics and proper write up ( which takes more time) later to my work web site.
BTW no photos of anyone ,apart from people i know were posted on faceoff.

Hi Dave,

Grant has explained it, mate. As this event was AoS-born, then here (on this thread or on a separate thread in Community Network), is where the pics should be hosted, as others and I don't 'do' Facebook, and have no intentions of starting either.

It's just a small bugbear of mine, the same as in The Gallery, when folks post links to external sites where pics exist of their kit, instead of embedding them here so that they appear instantly for all to see, as soon as the thread page opens :)

Yes, quick and easy it may be for the person involved, but not so convenient for those of us who do not wish to use Facepish, and only want to see pics of the event here on the forum! ;)

The exact same applies with system threads in The Gallery. Quite frankly, if you started a system thread there with simply a link to your Facebook page, then it would be deleted as being 'unfit for purpose'.

That, btw, is simply a general point I'm making, and no reflection whatsoever on what Rich has done, the reasons for which I *fully* understand :)
