Welcome to AOS Leo.

Tell us more about yourself please. What Hi-Fi you use. What music you listen to. And what plans you may have for your system.

As mentioned. You need a region or town shown in your profile.

Enjoy the forum,
Geoff.

Bye.

Cheeky.

I'm all about professional, broadcast quality audio. I tend to buy and use broadcast kit - it typically is more reliable and sounds better than domestic home "hi-fi" stuff, and more versatile.

Serious question. What constitutes broadcast kit? Would I be right in saying that this would be LS3/5A's truthfully reproducing Alvar Lidell and his RP dulcet tones, or does it go as far as the reproduction of recorded music?

You might get some differences of opinion on that.

Welcome to AoS Leo,

So what broadcast kit do you use? I use an EMT 930st TT, arm and cartridge and a Studer-Revox C221 broadcast standard CD player. My speakers are Quad 57 ESLs which are (or were) used by the BBC (inter alia) to monitor the quality of their broadcasts and by Philips in their quality control suites. I also use a couple of Denon 103 cartridges, designed for NBC.

I also use Quad 510 and Quad 50E monoblock amplifiers, as well as a Quad 520 in my second system, all of which are used by the BBC (in fact a couple of 50Es are ex-BBC items). My tape machine is a Nagra IV-S, used by the BBC and RAI.

I would agree that 'broadcast kit' is often more reliable (it has to be if it is used 24/7), but some would argue that not all of it "sounds better than domestic home "hi-fi" stuff". Discussion of this could make an interesting thread - why don't you expand on this?

Enjoy the Forum
Barry

I won't upset the audiophiles who will, quite rightly argue that their £2000 amp sounds better than something from Canford Audio which you could drop out of a plane and it still survive. It's a different target market and as Barry rightly says, broadcast equipment has to run 24/7.

The full kit list is long with highlights including some super condenser microphones, outboard processing via some dbx units which I have love/hate relationship with and a pair of DN-951FA's - managed to get a pair of them before they were discontinued. They're a nightmare to maintain (the lasers are driven hard and are prone to failure as a result) mind you.

Horses for courses in many ways... some pro gear such as mic pres and some outboard is popular precisely because it's so coloured! This is seen as part of the creative process.... which is another can of worms altogether!
