FS: Magneplanar MG1.6QR panel speakers

I've got speakerswapitis - so it's time to move this fab pair of speakers on.

I've got the original box, although flimsy would be an understatement!

Excellent condition and PWO.

They cost me £600 cash plus a considerable amount in petrol!

£550 firm. Collected from LD6 , mid Wales.

I might perhaps possibly maybe consider p/ex or swap for another pair of speakers.

They need a fair amount of wellie - so forget about using your 3wpc 2A3 SET valve amp. ;)

P.S. - if you want a great amp to drive them you can have my AMC 2445 power amp (90wpc and some serious current) for £150.

Configurable as a 2 or 4 channel amp, depending how you connect your cables.
Use it as 2 channel for the Maggies. :thumbsup:

Damn - the wife has just noticed that there is a small (2mm?) hole in the front grille cloth of one of the speakers.
Centre-ish near the top.

It doesn't affect performance, but it's there. You can see the dark spot in the photo.

... I find the 2001-ish grey slab look of the speakers a bit oppressive, so I cover them with a stylish net curtain to match the room decor anyway and the hole is totally invisible through that. :)

I got a pair of Thiel CS2.2 that I would have liked to swap for it just for fun. But the distance is an issue. The last time I drove to Wales and back (last month) it took me 8 hours of driving time :eek:.

Thiel CS2 2 - almost exactly the sort of speaker that I don't want in my 2nd system! - large, intrusive - that's why the Maggies are up for sale -- but I would be seriously tempted! :lol:

I've had Thiel 2.3 in my main system getting on for 10 years ago and liked them a lot - it would be fun to have the 2 2 in my 2nd system for a while. :)

Those NS1000M were one of the best gifts I ever received from anyone. The cost of the delivery charge pales into insignificance compared to the amount I recuperated off the back of them. It even paid off the mortgage of my house with just one payment :). Brought me luck they did. Not parting with them, ever.

I've got the smaller version of these the MG1.2QR, best speakers I've ever owned, wish my room was big enough for the 1.6 version. Sure anyone buying these would be very happy.

I have a pair of Magneplanar 1.7s which are the successor to the 1.6s. They are both great speakers but challenging to get the best sound out of them. I have them in a bedroom which I am using as a dedicated audio room. I have them over 4 feet from the front wall with my listening position about the same distance from the rear wall. This allows them to disappear and to achieve their best imaging. The biggest problem is with amplification. Although they will play at decent levels with modest amplification they really need a huge amount of current to "sing"! However, when driven properly, they are (in my opinion) one of the best bargains to be had in hifi.

I've set then up in the lounge and played the radio through them, they are now on TV sound duties.

I have found few speakers to sound as natural as Maggies (including my near 40 year old Rogers LS35a speakers). Piano and voice sound especially good on my 1.7s. In fact, they probably explain why I am listening to much more jazz and acoustic music these days.

They are on the second system, driven by my NEC A820E.

If they drive Maggies they will drive ESL63s. Maggies are fiendishly current hungry. Whether they are a good match is another matter. I find speaker/amp matching to be largely a matter of trial and error.
