Anyone got a spare SPU headshell, or a dead SPU in shell, or knows of one in existence somewhere?

There are several on ebay - not cheap though.

There aren't actually - most aren't complete or aren't properly intended for use with SPUs, as opposed to some other cartridges or other Ortofon models (SPU cartridges are a funny shape and need the right internals in the headshell if they are to fit). If there was something suitable on ebay I'd have bought it by now.

No. It's missing the crucial part that cradles the cartridge. You can't bolt an SPU into this headshell as it stands. It's also not heavy enough - the gubbins that's missing (or the base, in those headshells that have one) enable it (+ the actual cartridge) to weigh the 31g or so an SPU should weight. Am looking for something complete I can bolt my Royal N into.

The 'gubbins' you refer to is available from Ortofon. http://www.ortofon.com/spu-n-adapter-p-453-n-1579

How did you manage to use your Royal N in the Fidelity Research headshell?

Actually I have two of these adapters but they have neither the correct shape or sufficient weight to do what I'm looking for in these ebay headshells.

This is what you mean, but it's made of plastic or some kind of light alloy (not sure which) and weighs next to nothing - this is great for using an SPU cartridge in a normal headshell but it's insufficient for use in an SPU headshell:

Instead you see here a couple of cartridge examples - much more substantial weight, correct spacing to take the 'tongue' at the top of the SPU cartridge, and a hole for the screw that holds the base on. Total weight with cartridge about 31g. Modern and vintage examples. The transformer versions use the integral transformer as a weight (ingenious!) but where there's no transformer, a weight needs including.

Tom, I have two of the empty Spu headshells if you decide to go down that route. They are badged SME but are the same as the Ortofon ones.

Also have that lovely Fidelity Research (7 series) integrated headshell/cartridge that would work great on your Ikeda. Suitably heavy to keep you happy for hours . :)

Still on the hunt BTW.

Brian I sent you a PM about the SME headshells but you never got back to me?
