My current system

linn ds - tripath - pmc's

its not terible, but compared to the naim it cant keep pace with its self (i find it very odd that people dont belive in "prat" ... its bloody obvious when a hifi doesn't time well...anyway...) it sounds thiner and is less involving.
but.. to be fair the tripath cost a LOT less and for the money frankly its awesome... its just that now i dont have the naim i miss it already

roll on the valve kit!!!

The Tube Distinctions valve amps do prat big time.

Fo sho! Not so much with the naim pre though eh!! A fact I like concidering that all naim fan bois go on about is prat!

Really, that I do find interesting considering some permutations I've been playing around with recently. If you are saying that there was a lack of prat from the 82 with your new amp, how can the 180 restore prat if the pre-amp hasn't supplied it in the first place, assuming of course the 82/180 was sufficiently pratty in the first place:confused:.

I was there. I heard what Hamish heard. My guess is the issue is one of limited bandwidth of the 82 going into the wide bandwidth valve power amp.

I don't understand what I am about to say, I think Anthony/steve might be better to answer this, but something to do with the lower bandwidth of naim kit... Not sure! But it was very very aparent! I guess in simple terms it's down to synergy! If you read my thread about when steve came round I said the same then...
The findings were
82/180 - good timing but little overall depth especially in the lower mids
82/ps/td - much more over all depth to sound especially in the lower mids.. But where thee was more depth the timing became muddled
td pre/ps/td - timing returns and adds an openness and dynamic to the sound previously never heard with the naim kit!
And we arnt talking minor changes in the sound here, these were quite profound! Thi is infact the whole reason I wasn't going to buy the power amp of steve until Anthony agreed to make me a pre in a similar vain to steves!!

The bandwidth of an amplifier should always be wider than that of the device preceeding it; otherwise you run into the problem of bandwidth limiting.

That makes sence! In your experience can it have an effect the other way round? Ie in the circumstance as I discribe.. Or would you perhaps put it down to something else?

I'm not familiar with Naim equipment, except to say that Naim have their own views on things like bandwidth (gain-bandwidth product) and stability. I believe that Naim preamps are designed to be partnered only with their own power amps and are not intended to be used with amplifiers made by another manufacturer. Without knowing the input specification of Anthony's amp or that of your 82 preamp (in particular the output specification), I can't really say. It might be that the 82 is suffering from slew rate limiting - but I could well be wrong.

To be fair.. The technical side of this hobby completely escapes me so I guess it doesn't matter! Il not worry and let me yug holes do all the work! :)

Unless I'm mistaken, Naim preamps generally have a high input impedance (good) and a lowish output impedance (also good). Some of the lower-caste newer models are slightly different though, with a lower input impedance.

I also think that the bandwidth limiting you're stuck with in Naim's better preamps prevents slew-rate limiting in the power amp, although I think the bandwidth may be slightly wider now as the power amps have been fettled more than a little, judging by the radically different distortion behaviour these days (lower order harmonics instead of 3rd, 5th and 7th with crossover distortion too to magnify the prat factor).

Dave, I understand all the all the individual words but the combination... Right over my head :)
does any of that mean you can understand why me and steve heard what we did? Sorry to be so thick :)

The bandwidth of the pre goes up to 1MHz. The power amp goes up to 100 KHz.

I'm way out of my depth here!

Which pre Steve? Naims generally used to go to 50K before severe rolloff IIRC...

Those PMC's will need some control as well

Hi Hamish. Out of interest, which Tripath amp are you using? I am a fan of tripath and have been since I had a trends TA10.1 which I regret selling every waking moment!

Oh yeah! Duh sorry M8y! I am sure I have mentioned that the Bantam uses a Sure board? I am waiting for my 4 channel Sure board to actively drive my OB's.....
