Techie External PSU upgrade (for dummies)

Hi all

Apologies for reviving this topic, I am aware many discussions exist here and elsewhere on the topic. But the more I try to reach a conclusion on which route to take on my own Technics, the deeper the plethora technical information and heated debates I uncover. So I put the idea on ice for while, after spending hours reading through various threads and checking out various offerings. Now coming back to it, it would appear that Paul Hynes is no longer making custom PSUs for Technics, is that correct?

There is talk about the "internal regs" being a crucial part of this upgrade. That's where things seem to go from amateur to extreme enthusiast, and for most amateur tweakers like myself, it's way out of our depth (and budget).

So. For all intents and purposes, could the basic offerings from Custom Hifi Cables (the DC1) or MCRU be loosely considered the best bang for buck options (and possibly the least time consuming)? Or any other models or routes that spring to mind? I don't mind spending a little more if it represents a worthwhile gain, provided it's a sensible and relatively simple approach.

Appreciate any words of wisdom.

Paul Hynes did have a more entry PSU, which is now discontinued but I wasn't aware there were plans to discontinue others. Origin Live also do Technics PSUs.

Hi Mike,

The power supplies are still available. The SR2 has been discontinued, as it is now no longer cost effective to manufacture.

I have been dealing with some rather difficult family health issues since Christmas, which are fortunately being resolved, albeit rather slowly. My work schedule and activity on the forums has been somewhat limited through this period, but I am now back in the driving seat, and rapidly catching up.

The SR3-21, SR5-21/27 and SR7-21/27 can be used with the SL1200. Prices are shown on my AoS trade section. The AoS forum member 10% discount still applies to these power supplies and the requisite DC leads for these when purchased with the power supplies.

Neil has conducted a very thorough and impressive power supply test for the SL1200 that is well worth a read. See the link in the post above.

Thanks a lot for the input chaps. That article was quite insightful and helpful.

I'm very glad to hear that your PSUs are still available Paul, and I wish your family a speedy recovery.

On balance, it would appear the SR5 is a sound choice for a moderately modified table such as mine. I am quite tempted by the SR7 but the sheer size of it is quite daunting. I'm not put off by the extra bass extension though! I feel my table needs a smidgen more bass slam/definition to complete the picture. I currently have the stock PSU but with following mods:
- Litz tonearm rewire, foam filled tube, OFC leads
- AT150SA cartridge, ADC headshell, auxillary arm weight
- Mike New Bearing
- Funk Firm Strata Platter + bruil record weight
- Isonoes

To SR7 or not to SR7, that is the question..
