It sounds nice but it didn't have much to beat, I was using an old Sony MD before. It has got a nice chunky facia and is narrower than my Quad Pre/Power so it's discreet. It's quite smooth and tuneful. The bass line is alot easier to follow than on the MD player. As I said initially, it's only for our bedroom so it's plenty good enough.:)

I was looking for a mint Quad 66CD but in the end I couldn't see the point in spending approx £200 to £250 on a 15 year old (or more) player, also it had to be mint which is quite rare.:(

Never thought about going down the music server/squeezebox/Dac route?

I was going to get an ipod Classis 160GB and a Wadia 170i but the thought of loading it up was too much for me!

I like the look of the Sooloos but it's a bit pricey.:stalks:

Hydie, looking back on your desire to get a Quad 66 CD player, I really would have counselled against it now, as it's well over twenty years old, has a non-available mech and the basic performance out-of-the-box wasn't too hot. With high-current mains filtering and careful choice of signal leads, you could transform it into something very much better. The 67CD tended to answer most of these criticisms at a stroke.

If you were ever to want a musical sounding mid-priced CD player with upgrade and mech serviceability, I'd look at Avondale's ACD3 (Naim derived) or the AAA5 (Arcam Alpha 5 based). Neither are midi sized unfortunately, but Les can service the mechs, has a stockholding of spares and tweaks them very sensitively IMO.

Just a note for the future.......

Hi, I realise the 66 isn't the final word in CD players but I've always liked Quads longevity and serviceability and it would have sort of matched my 34 and 306??? I wanted a 67 years ago but they were a bit expensive for me at the time. The system I'm using sounds quite nice ..Cambridge Audio Sonata, Quad 34, Quad 306 and ProAc MiniTowers.:)

Have you fettled the Quads yet? The 34 leaks its supply caps I understand and if the 306 is anything like the 405 series, it'll need caps as well. Also, don't forget the preamp (I think it's the pre) inverts the phase on these, so connect the + speaker lead to the -ve terminal on the amp on BOTH channels to invert the absolute phase. Hopefully, you should hear an improvement.....

I had a service on the 34 at Quad but no mods done. The 306 I bought secondhand and will this year have it serviced and have the speaker outlets changed the the external type rather than the recessed type. I haven't really thought of "hotting" either unit. I take the attitude that they are not really top ranking gear and live with their moderate performance. Thanks for advice.:)

Quad always got the basics right IMO, but often fell down on the finer points of tuning, 'cos it was the view of the then design people (not particularly Peter Walker) that these things were un-necessary..

Enjoy your music. It's the opinion of those better qualified than me that Cambridge make some of the best SS equipment around these days and it's only the low price that makes audiophools ignore them IMO....
