My dad had one of these Ford Capri Mk.I, 3000E, was a 3.0 litre V6 engine..Think he had it bored out to 3.2! Thing i remember the most was the brakes wernt good enough to handle the power, it was all over the road when he stuck the foot down...His was a 'K' reg with black vinyl roof, sounded just like that tho..

My dad had a Rover 90. It was great inside with loads of leather and walnut. There was a dinky slide out tray beneath the dashboard with chromed tools in it.
He used to call it the poor mans Rolls Royce.
Like most cars from that time it didnt like cold weather and he used to have to start it with a handle.
My dad had no car when I was young. :)

Brand new Mini Clubman Estate - I recall going to the dealer with him to collect it - about 1973...it didn't even have a radio - I was not impressed!
Austin Maxi - red with the 1750 engine - good motor, that - loads of room in the back for me and my brothers to fight!

It was already a pretty old car when he had it, and I remember a family holiday in the 60's to Cornwall which turned into something of an 'adventure'!

actually that's a lie!... He had a Capri (only ever memory of my mom is in that Capri) then he had loads of vw passats, he did like a passat!! Jan, my step mom had loads of Suzuki vitara's - all shit, the first one had a bloody bench for a back seat!!
There was a mint Mk 1 Capri in the supermarket car park the other day - It looked super-cool compared to all the modern cars around it.
1966 Oldsmobile Cutlass Convertible.
The reason I'm into American cars. When I was about 7, my dad swapped his Escort Van for a 1966 Oldsmobile Cutlass convertible, V8, with Hurst manual 'box... Picked me up from school with the top down, the first I knew he was getting it!

My dads 1st car was a Riley Elf when I was about 10, daft looking thing, a Mini with a boot stuck on it FFS, but it did have a red leather interior wot I thought was kwell. Couple of years later he got a Ford Corsair, anyone remember them, no, thought not.

My father had a few cars from a VW Beetle from before I was born. I can remember that car even as a toddler and loved to be taken out in it. Then it was a Morris Marina, an Austin Allegro with a 5 speed box! His first company car was the all-new Chrysler Alpine then a couple of Renault 18s in succession.
In the 80s he had a 9 month dabble with the MG Maestro - a total piece of shit although quick. Then he went German in my teens, first a Passat then called the Santana, and finally an Audi 90 that I learnt to drive in.

My cousin has a mint Mk1 in the garage - her father bought it new for her in about '74. Metallic bronze with brown vinyl roof and cream leather interior. To die for!

Another one of his cars was the Ford 'Granada' Mk.I Coupe, signs of a grumpy old man setting in, be about mid 70's when he bought it, was a powerful car but a lot heavier than the 'Capri'..These are actually very sought after now especially in Germany.

The ones i remember being driven in were a mk1 cortina, mk 2 cortina, vw beetle, Austin Gypsie, various tractors:lol:, mk 2 escort, mk 4 cortina, reuault 14, then i was driving,:eyebrows: Alfa sud was my first car,

My dad had a Hillman Hunter, Leyland Princess, Morris Marina, Cortina, Mk 2 Escort, Sierra, Mk 4 Granada, Mk 2 Mondeo, Merc A class and now a Vauxall Meriva.
My brother had some more interesting cars Mk 1 Capri, Mk 1 Escort, Mk 1 3.2 Granada Coupe.
My dream would be to own a yellow Mk 3 Cortina with black vinyl roof and chrome trim and wheels.
My Dad had the knack of picking dodgy cars.
An Austin 1100 which i learned to drive in. Not too bad.
A Triumph Toledo which i passed my test in. Quite troublesome.
An appallingly unreliable Fiat 128 which i eventually blew up, had repaired, and then it fell to rusty bits.
An Austin Allegro 1500 which was strangely reliable but still didn't inspire confidence.
Finally a Toyota Corolla, which was a breath of fresh air, but he never had chance to really benefit from it before he died.
Couple of years later he got a Ford Corsair, anyone remember them, no, thought not.

My father was a highly paid Toolmaker employed by BLMC.
His last car before he died was a 4 litre Vanden Plas with a Rolls Royce engine.
It looked good parked outside our council house.

That explains a lot, wasn't it always the toolmakers at the heart of all the militant union action at the old BL? So now we know it was MPs' dad who bears the responsibility for the demise of the British car industry.

From memory they were:
Austin A35
Ford Cortina Mk I 1200cc
then
Daimler V8 250, a car based on the Mk II Jaguar; it even had wire wheels,
Jaguar XJ6, Series 2, 4.2 litre
Jaguar XJ12, Series 3 (can't remember the engine capacity)
and finally
Daimler 'Double Six', a 5.3 litre V12 engine.

Yes it is.. Luverly, they were a good car but the engine wasnt so great..They were shitty V4's..Didnt make this car for long..

If it was an XJ12 it would have been 5.3 the same as the Daimler. Lovely motors, I also loved the first XJS.

Same motor as in the original Trannie van, IIRC the Corsair ran from '65 to '69 model years....so it was discontinued at the dawn of prog.

They were the mutt's nuts. Semi-auto gearboxes, hydraulic suspension that lifted up when you started the car (and could be lifted/lowered via a lever in the interior - how cool was that to play with?) and lights that tracked the steering. Oh, and they looked like something out of Logans Run. Still do now.
Cost a fortune if they went wrong though, but they were pretty reliable IIRC.
It had an eight-track stereo system that sounded great, but we only had about a dozen cartriges to play on it. Fond memories of listening to the Polovtsian Dances as we drove to Cornwall on holiday, falling asleep on the back seat and you're mum & dads conversation drifting further and further away...

I thought the Vanden Plas was a 4.2 litre block, whilst the Rolls Royce engine was a 6.7 litre chevy block:confused:. But I stand corrected:).

I always lusted after a Tickford Turbo Capri - the 2.8i V6 engine turbocharged - a massive 205 BHP!

Talking of Vanden Plas, I have one of these, same colour, unfortunately bodywork is not as good, however mechanically it's perfect. The engine (as standard) is very close to Mini Cooper 1275S spec. The car is no slouch and handles really well.

However.. No Vanden Plas down our road (my first 'proper' girlfriend did though, the 1300 !!...oooohh that leather:):):))
No he had a white Moggy Minor for ages which I learnt to drive in.
Followed by that Austin 1300 GT. Bloody hell, what a dreadful car that was.
You know...it was only when I went out to live in India that I remembered how noisy those cars of the 60's and 70's were.. whining differentials, and noisy exhausts. Bliss.

I had a 1300GT. It looked lovely when I bought it-white with black plastic leather roof covering. Within a year it had the dreaded car cancer and failed the MOT 7 times due to major corrosion including 'inner wing trumpets'. Then the gearbox went. I sold it to an innocent who didnt notice the blue smoke from the exhaust because the piston rings had gone too.
I still feel guilty....
