fixing an old telephone.....

i got an old bt phone with a twisty dial thing.. when you pick up the reciver it just makes a shusshing noise!
if i melt all the re melt the solder joints inside might that fix any dry joints, and as such fix the problem... worth a go or not?

fixed it now anyway... i think it needs a new switch (solonoid???) on the hand set lift switch thing... melting the joints has made it work about 95% of the time instead of 5% from my messing with it just now.. i might see if i can find a broken one on ebay and canibalise it to get the remaining 5% in the bag

Looks like a mid '70's 746..You should be able to service that switch.

how would i do that.. does it sould like a dry joint to you? (is that the right frase)

Have you converted the wire lead right? The switch should just be a simple sprung loaded switch! If you don't wanna mess abaout you can always get one off fleece bay for a tenner is swap the cover..The model number should be on the base looks like a 746 but not sure!

My Dad put a lock on our phone when I was a teenager - the sort that locked the dial from rotating - but if you quickly pressed the "hang up bit" (technical term)as it was pulse dialling in those days you coul still make calls (10 was 0) - a bit haphazard but the wrong numbers made for more fun! (Hello, is that Mr Wall? No, well is Mrs Wall there? You mean you've got no walls there? Well how do you keep you f****** roof up! *slam*!)

Those 746 series phones have a carbon granule transmitter which get noisy.

If it goes 'crackly' after a while while you're talking on it, try whacking the mouthpiece a couple of times into the palm of your hand. If that quietens it down temporarily it needs a new transmitter. They're piss easy to replace but finding a new one will be a problem.

Yeah, we got other phones in the house for that though! It's just to look pretty and be answered as aposed to being used to dial out. It's also useful incase there is a power cut and I'm not at home! Hannah doesn't have a mobile (she does but she doesn't charge it), so I wouldn't want her to be at home and not be able to ring out etc! It also has sentimental value as I bought it from the same shop at the same time as I bought hannah's engagment ring... I told her I had bought her a present.... You can guess the rest!!

seriously, who would do that.. i had absolutly no doubts about me and hannah when i bought the ring, and i cant imagine not being in the sort of relationship where it wouldnt be certain... i dunno, very odd! you gotta feel sorry for the guy though.... and there is loads like that on youtube!

I have a mint cream bakelite GPO 332L from 1956.

You can get anything fixed and it is surprisingly cheap.

There are several forums offering advice.

I had a defective microphone fixed and the part cost £4.99 inc postage.
