I took the pooch for a walk around a local park yesterday and was struck by the complete lack of management this year. The whole area is overrun by weeds, including vast swathes of thistles and nettles. Local authority cut backs I suppose. It's a shame, as it's a nice park.

Is it just me, or has anybody else noticed that nettles and thistles seem to be growing to huge sizes this year? Even in my garden there have been nettles growing to a metre or more tall in next to no time.

Yes our council encourage over growth, you know long grass & all those weeds that look like flowers poppies etc..

What's wrong with that? Just looks like a normal park to me.

Plants and weeds are doing well due to all the rain and of course the extra CO2 'pollution'. Like a tropical rainforest on the waste grounds round here at the moment (we don't have a park that's for southern softees) ;)

Its under repair actually. Its a fence but it can swing out of way with some supports so i can get in to clean the pond etc. Was cleaned but not finished yet.. Not sure if they are missing or just black screws..i often use those as they grip well and good small size. Think they are for plasterboard.

Been away getting a giant box of fat balls :eyebrows: 7.5 kg for £7 out of B&M...

They are hard to see even close up...had to do a double look. It was all made from what i had lying atvtime including screws etc.
Kids are both still alive n kicking sits done it job... Kinda got used to it so will keep it in case a passing kid wanders in...wouldnt want it on my conscience

At night time in winter that picture is pretty much what it is like. Indeed Hollywood pays big money to film its post-apocalyptic zombie movies here. (That's not a joke in case anyone was wondering).

I had a pond a bit like that years ago. It had a rockery behind it, neighbours fence behind that. I got a fed fed up with cleaning up the pond each year, a mass off stuff seemed to grow in it. To chat to the neighbour I sometimes stood on the rockery. Slid down the rockery and splash, into the pond. My neighbour thought this hilarious.

You would think that I might have learnt a lesson, but no, I managed to do this again on another occasion. The pond is now gone.

We have to think like the VC and use what is available. How about cutting up some of the dumped furniture and using the wood to make pungi stakes? Concealed in shallow pits in a chequerboard pattern. Simple, inexpensive and if it comes on top you can always blame the local Vietnamese,

Nah. I'll stick with the dog. He's enough. Think 75 pound Doberman with attitude, but in black and white and that's about right. I've had him out the front straining, leaping and fighting the leash and snarling and barking to get at intruders. He puts on a great show, practically howling with fury to attack.

Somewhat off the beaten track today. We ended up pushing our way through chest high thistles for the last hundred yards or so. Dog not impressed, even though I went ahead first.

The 'gypsies' have invaded. About thirty caravans and associated trucks etc., have arrived on the local village green. Bad news. There'll be human shit, used nappies. Piles of mud and rubble and general refuse left there. At least the council security people and the police had turned up. They may go, but that won't put right all the tyre ruts and other damage. I bet the local pubs have been having fun in the last day or two.

I blame the council for not acting sooner. Half a dozen landed here at the beginning of the week and nothing was done. They spread the word and loads turn up.

They're not really gypsies anyway, even though some try the Romany bit on. They are what used to be called tinkers, just 'Irish' travellers, though many were born here.
