So it does the opposite of the Furutech vinyl disc demagnetiser?
Once the furtech is full they turn it into a dde1 then vis a ve...perpetual business... Hey it may well work for all i know.

At three grand and change you really wouldn't want it to work. I'd feel guilty getting it on trial as my expectation bias would be overwhelming.

But since we don't know what it does, it would be difficult to say if it works or not.
Russ Andrews should be honest and say "it does fuck all". That way they won't infringe the ASA, nor would they disappoint the punters, who after spending three grand would be delighted to know it does 'exactly what it says on the tin' . :D
I'm of the view that there is nothing you can do to a Cd that will make it play any 'better'. If it skips, clean it, otherwise that's it. I've never heard of any kind of CD treatment that makes the slightest bit of sense.

Just thinking aloud but since a lot of people have moved to file based audio this would be no good to them. No way to enhance the file if it is on a hard drive. They're stuck with the non-magentized version. Losers!
I was going to say let's invent a gizmo that claims to improve sound from your hard drive but I'm realising there probably is one already.
More audiophool BS IMHO . . . . oh, did I say that out loud!

I 'green penned' back in the day, and was happy that it did improve the sound, making it more focused and defined.
Of course, you could ask me why I haven't used one for years.
But then I used to go in for all sorts of cones and platforms and support gizmos as well, and no longer do.
Meh, life's to short for that sort of stuff, I really can't be bothered now.
Maybe I've just grown up, or maybe I've just grown deaf. :)

Noooooooo!!!! All of my CRC confirmed dbpoweramp accurate FLAC ripped CDs, are now rendered substandard
I'd like to think that my FLAC files have some magnetic properties, particularly in the context of an HDD ;)
I did attempt to magnetically enhance a colleague's PC once, via the means of a large motorcycle tank bag being placed upon it...the results were fairly negative, from his PC's perspective :eyebrows:

Just magnetise the hard drive. That should 'clean up' the sound nicely.
An honest, yet enticing ad for this device would say:
'Its effect is totally transparent; it adds nothing, and takes nothing away. Hear your CDs as they were meant to be heard!'

I've seen that too. Jeeeez.... yawn, pah.
I've cancelled my RA 'comic' as I was too overwhelmed and quite frankly 'bored' of reading tenuous theories to do with kit and cables with astronomical price points. They sell a small selection of okay stuff but when something like this comes along, well... it's power off for me IMO
No idea how it would do anything but nothing is made by the quantum uber wizzards in a far away land. Keep your feet on the ground people and white knuckle your purse strings. Common sense will prevail.
Beauty of it is RA make no claims really to its abilities. Just pocket silly money for selling it. Subjectively though unless youve tried it you will never know though.
I notice the link has changed from the actual item to the home page.
Maybe Russ is reading here? Probably already nicked my idea for a hard drive enhancer. 'Hello, I'd like to place an order please. Yes, my name is Punter. Mug Punter. With one G.'

Can you please explain to me what their is to de-magnetise on a CD disc??
Can you please explain to me what their is to de-magnetise on a CD disc??
This is a sample from the site I linked to earlier...it's the ink innit!!!!
"Firstly, it is thought that ferrous ingredients contained in the printing ink of the label side of the disc is one of the causes of magnetizing discs. For example, iron oxide is used for red, yellow or brown ink, cobalt is used for blue or green ink and nickel is used for silver ink. These materials, iron, cobalt, nickel, are called ferromagnetic substances, and they are relatively easy to magnetize.
Second, problems are caused by the use of aluminum used for the recording side of CD. Currently, the JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) states that the purity of the aluminum used must be 99.0%. The other 1% contains ferromagnetic substance such as iron, nickel and cobalt. Aluminum is a weak magnetic material, so it is easily influenced by magnetism.
CD players contain magnetic substances, when a disc is played, the rotation of the mechanism, magnet and motor generates a flux which quickly causes discs to become magnetized."

Pesky traces of magnetic material, bending that laser light... ;P
Well, i guess you never know til you try. Unless you dont believe in subjectivism lol.
I didnt think the Densen disc would make a difference but to me anyways, it does. Similar idea i guess...Initially on old gear it was most noticible, but i do run it occasionally... And i dont hang around to listen to the tones :eyebrows:
...I particularly like; "Aluminum is a weak magnetic material, so it is easily influenced by magnetism. "
Yeah, that Aluminium; two drinks and she's anybody's.
Ali is quite strongly affected my an electromagetism or paramagnetism especially in rotation. You can move it fairly easily in the direction of field as in paramagnetism it all lines up... Wont turn round though... When magnetism is removed then the electrons or whatever just lie in any old order unlike feromagnetism. So its not impossible theory

You are confusing paramagnetism with the eddy currents induced in the rotating aluminium disc. The permeability of aluminium is 1.000022 - hardly magnetic, or even weakly magnetic.
Didnt say it was magnetic, just that it can be affected by an electromagentic field.
Well, i guess you never know til you try. Unless you dont believe in subjectivism lol.
:
There's subjectivism and then there is complete nonsense. This is in the second category. In the explanation offered there is no explanation as to why the trace metals in the ink on the label (ludicrous in itself) being magnetized will have any effect on the sound quality. It will certainly have no effect on the read of the disc since in the unlikely event that there is an issue the error correction will kick in.
If the error correction cannot fix the issue 100% then you will get an audible drop out.
Although I did see someone claiming that the electronic noise generated by the error correction circuitry will have an effect on the sound. God knows what equipment these people are using where they think they can hear these effects but it must be bloody good, whatever it is.
Its unlikely i grant you but manyvthings were once i guess... Within reason i like to have open mind personally. Doubt it will do enough to justify price even if it works(big if). Better maybe getting a better cd player.
At least they offer a 30 refund so russ must have some confidence i suppose.. The ink bit was not in referencecto his one i might add...
Right Russ send me one for a test ;)
Open mind, yes. But if they can't explain exactly how it works how did they build it in the first place? How was it designed? And why is it so expensive?
If those 3 questions can be answered satisfactorily then I would, perhaps, deign to experiment with it. But we all secretly know they won't be because they can't be.

There are many things equally ridiculous that many (even a majority) of audiophiles believe to be beneficial even though they have zero effect in the same way that this crap would ;) There is unfortunately a trend in hi fi, especially in the "subjectivism uber alles" camp, similar to alternative medicine in that the less sense something makes... the more they seem to believe in it
To me subjective evaluation of hi fi is very important.. in conjunction with objective measurement. No matter how good a speaker or amp measures it also needs to be listened to as the final arbiter of sound quality and maybe some changes made after listening. This to me is sensible subjectivism. The other type of subjectivism, where someone will take a gizmo such as this seriously.... and maybe even report an improvement in sound quality... I have no time for... to put it mildly!

The chances of this making an improvement are the same as an after market mains cable making an improvement. Zero. And as the circular arguments have all been circumnavigated before there is also zero point in discussing it in further detail.... My point is that as silly as this gizmo obviously is, it's no more silly than other things that the extremist wing of the subjectivist party believe :D

On Bryan Adams we can agree! Love "Bat out of hell" but it's possibly the worst recording quality ever released by a major artist... The Fall would be an example of my idea of musical hell... A boring drone with some bloke talking over it.... worse still... country and western! I really don't adhere to the "musical inverse snobbery" (if that's an apt way of putting it) where any artist that can write and sing a decent tune with melody, harmony etc and play their instruments very well/with polish is then seen as "lacking edge, not 'real' enough, "too commercial"... but then if it's a tuneless slash yer wrists fest with someone talking over it/can't carry a tune in a bucket it's "street", "NME approved" "raw" etc :sofa:

My last cd player had both to which I'm sure is nothing special these days.
What it should have is an internal view and a full explanation of how it actually works and what it does, RA do it on cables with nice cross section computer generated diagrams so what's stopping them getting a screwdriver out?
It's human nature to question this because no effort has gone in to show us what it does, how it works and so on. So IMO they deserve to be ridiculed.

I’m completely with you on that one, Jez.
Although I’d heard of the Fall I had never heard anything by them until I caught some of their set at BBC 6 Music’s Bristol Festival on TV last year. What I experienced was as follows:
- A drummer and bassist who seemed fairly good and rhythmically tight
- A guitarist who was also good but was appeared to be playing a different tune to that of the drummer and bassist.
- A confused-looking toothless old man carrying a microphone. He stumbled continually round the stage, only pausing to either shout something unintelligible into it, or bash it on the bass amplifier/drumkit/stage.
I assumed there was something very wrong but it seems this is normal. I don’t get it.

Mark E Smiths concept of what singing consists of is very distant from the definition I have....
It would be interesting if some of the aficionado's of a-tonal a-musical stuff (not just The Fall). the stuff that basically has no tune, is just loads of noise crashing bashing etc and has "singing" which is shouting, talking or indefinable yelps, could explain what they get out of it?

That's just the sort of question my dad would ask me about the Stones. I'm not sure there's an answer, really; either you like it or you don't. In the same way that people like different types of humour - explaining why it's funny kind of defeats the object.
But The Fall has some great tunes, especially from the Brix Smith period. Here's one of my favourites:

I don't get Take That, personally I think they are 100% bin fodder in every respect but some people get them which is fine. Horses for courses I suppose.
The Fall are one of my favourite bands. So much so that I often run new music through my Mark E Smithometer, wondering what he would think of it and sometimes feeling a bit guilty if I thought he might not. Well that was until I read his book and found out that he quite liked Stevie Wonder, who I can't abide, and I stopped worrying about it so much. I bet he doesn't go in for 'hi-fi' much either. Someone as already said, you either get it or you don't with The Fall, sort of like any music really except a bit more exaggerated, but once you're hooked you're hooked. I've never heard anyone who is ambivalent about them. The thing is with a lot of older 'indie' type music, is that it was probably never intended to sound good on hi-fi or at least it was never considered. I'd hate to fall into the trap of listening to shite music just because it sounds good on hi-fi as I believe some may have done.

It certainly must be a case of you get it or don't.... I can't see how anyone could hate Stevie Wonder personally! Sure he's made some dross but tracks like "Superstition ", Master Blaster" "Pastime Paradise"... pure class in every way! What's not to like?
Funky Town
Tried to learn how to play that on my work phone keypad but couldn't figure it out. Then a more gifted colleague pointed out the keypad only has 3 notes despite having 9 keys.

I'm not familier with "Little Stevie Wonder"'s "seminal" Motown work :D
Mark E Smiths concept of what singing consists of is very distant from the definition I have....
It would be interesting if some of the aficionado's of a-tonal a-musical stuff (not just The Fall). the stuff that basically has no tune, is just loads of noise crashing bashing etc and has "singing" which is shouting, talking or indefinable yelps, could explain what they get out of it?
Presumably you don't enjoy Picasso's art either...;)
Not everything in life should be sugary sweet, and nice...sometimes you need a bit of edge, attitude, groove, and even self effacing humor!
I personally find the likes of Phil Collins, Meatloaf, Take That, and other commercial junk etc, nauseating in the extreme...
...FYI I have even more Miles Davis CDs than Fall ones, so variety is very important for me
If you're feeling adventurous why not try some early Can, or even some of Scott Wallker's later solo stuff...;)

As it happens I love Picasso's art... and Miles Davis, Can and Scott Walker! I wouldn't by a million miles associate Take That (which I can't stand) with Meatloaf or Phil Collins though.. completely different to me. I guess the chasm between our tastes is that I don't need (or want!) something to be over simplistic and often without musical merit ie can't sing, can't play "thinks shouting, yelping, swearing etc makes them "edgy"" in order to get "a bit of edge, attitude, groove, and even self effacing humor" ;) Even Mr Collins can be plenty edgy and with attitude on tracks such as "Through these walls" and "I don't care any more"!
I just can't see how or why folks can see positive in a singer being incapable of singing and therefore talks or shouts instead and in music having no tune one could hum etc... kinda banging, random notes, 2 chords and that's it and all over a drum machine backing or whatever.
It would be a boring world if we were all the same :) Some even like "techno"

But since we don't know what it does, it would be difficult to say if it works or not.
Russ Andrews should be honest and say "it does fuck all". That way they won't infringe the ASA, nor would they disappoint the punters, who after spending three grand would be delighted to know it does 'exactly what it says on the tin' . :D
You are wrong, this is a new piece of technology! Namely a gravity wave deflector. It has come about by work done at the University of Kendal. They discovered that Gravity waves have an adverse affect on turntables and CD players. The presence of gravity waves they found made turntables wow at a very low frequency and caused CD players to generate high levels of jitter. This device is designed to reflect those nasty gravity waves back into space where they belong, protecting your turntables and CD players. The device has a piece of di-lithium crystal at its heart, enclosed in a jacket of woven speaker cable. Mains 230v is passed through the speaker cable and because of the complete absence of RFI ( due to the woven cable ) the crystal generates the deflection field. The product is expensive because di-lithium crystal is very rare and only obtainable from the deepest depths of lake Windermere. It was noted that the product performs to it highest level when placed on a torlyte stand, supported by Jumbo oak cones.
Di-lithium crystals? Gotta have one... Star trek here i come. Might time travel me back to the 70,s when musac was musac and i was young enough to get my end away;)

Just found this thread.......back on topic for a moment.
Very cleverly marketed, doesn't claim to do anything so cannot be accused of selling something not fit for purpose.
I wonder if the effects of this device can be felt once the disc has been ripped and stored on a hard drive.
(EDIT: jumped in and posted without reading the whole thread here -- sorry if I've repeated what someone else has already said!)

We touched on it. I suspect the answer to your question is that it depends on how good your imagination is. :)
Since Russ Andrews doesn't say exactly what this device is supposed to do to your discs (apart from lighten your wallet by over £3,000), it's difficult to say if the benefits, or otherwise, of the treatment transfer when the disc is ripped to a hard drive.
No doubt RA is working on a device to enhance the performance of computer hard discs. :D
If he is then he stole my idea!

Nice idea but I doubt it would work. How much would you chip in? If £3, that would require over 1,000 participants.

For £3 you can buy a new leader for the Labour party.
And get £2.50 back in change!
Marco.

For sure, don't think there are enough gullible people here so it would be a non-starter.
I'm sure there is a Blue Peter version made from an egg cup, two toilet roll tubes and some sticky back plastic. In theory it will be just as effective and by Grabthar's Hammer, what a savings!

Actually, the cost has gone up to £25! So Brexit is definitely forcing up prices across the board.

OTOH, there's a 'Signature', gold-plated, bespoke version available at £25,000, so this basic £3000 model is, in the immortal words of Roy Gregory, 'something of a bargain'.

Didnt say it was magnetic, just that it can be affected by an electromagentic field.
And where does the field come from that it interacts with? Even the servo coil isn't close or anywhere near large enough to have an effect.
And as for pigments being magnetic, sheesh, just taking iron oxide as an example it's totally non magnetic, just like 99% of iron compounds.
Yes, the 'magnetic ink' idea does seem to be popular in some quarters - talk about clutching at pseudo scientific straws :).

The product of years of research it says on the site - years of research into what I have to ask?
As for the marketing - yes very clever as it makes no claims whatsoever and offers a full money back guarantee if you dont like it or feel it works.
So what it actually does and how is a mystery - I imagine it degausses the already entirely non-magnetic CD.
I can't remember who makes it now (one of the master foo manufacturers) but there is a CD treating device into which you put a credit card type thing and quantum dots are somehow energised/released - or some such - I'll have a look for it. Most of these devices either spin the disc over a magnet or shine an LED onto it. Either way I just see them as CD gadgets designed to replace the task of record cleaning for those who love the whole 'ritual' associated with audio.

That is such a great review, in almost every aspect. From the list of foo in the reviewer's system ( 'IAR carbon CD damper; Boston Audio graphite CD damper, Denson demagnetizer CD; Furutech DeMag; Nanotech Nespa #1; TacT RCS calibrated microphone and software; Exact Audio Copy software; Compaq server w/Windows Server 2003 and XP; wood, brass and aluminum cones and pyramids; Xitel surround processor; Manley Skipjack; Boston Audio Design TuneBlocks')
to this classic: ' The regrettable recent demise of the Nespa's original inventor with whom we had an ongoing dialogue stopped our investigations short before getting his complete answer'
to the bizarre conclusion 'Audible results are very good and it is hard to listen to a non- treated disc after listening to an enhanced version of that same disc on any CDP
I can't see any other alternative: Either the reviewer is insane, or is complict in the scam.
My experience is that people who are up for these sorts of psycho babble gadgets are really REALLY into them - nothing is stronger than faith.
But wait! Surely if the guy heard a difference, the difference was real? You measurebators with your white coats and oscilloscopes will never understand subjectivism, because you have no soul. Besides, science can't explain everything. As Einstein said [cont'd p.94].

Or it indeed worked.
The thing is, some elements of 'foo' hide in gray areas. But when it comes to a compact disc there is simply nothiing you can do to the disc that will change the sound in any way, except to damage it to the extent that the error correction will fail and you will get audible drop outs and skips, or the player will not read it.
It is just a piece of plastic with a simple code (amplitude/frequency) embedded on it. it isn't like a record where you can clean it, centre it, clamp it, mess with the VTA or the SRA and get better tracking and better performance. The cheapest, crappiest player will read the disc exactly the same as the most expensive, bestest player. Okay after the read there is a difference, but the read is the same every time.
So there is absolutely nothing, nothing at all, that will improve the read of a CD. There is no gray area here, not even for the most subjective of subjectivists. I appreciate that Machina Dynamica is some sort of situationalist piss-take, which is fine, but what is the reviewer's excuse?
I don't think they are (intended as) a joke - if they are it is a profit making one.

A touch absolutist there Martin...?
Just a thought, but given the tight tolerances the laser must work to and given the rpm of the spinning disk, vibration damping and light dispertion could be potential factors?
Know that I (confession time) had a stick on acetate disc I got free with Hifi News back in the day and it did seem to improve things?
In my defence m'lud, painting the edges with a green pen did hee haw. :)

Vibration may cause problems after disc read - creating noise, which may somehow make it into the signal somewhere inside the transport or CD player, which is the argument for having a well -engineered mech. But the read will either be perfect (after error correction) or will audibly fail. It is the nature of how it works, it can't be otherwise. There's a lot that happens after that which can affect the sound. But the read/ error correct bit is not difficult to get right. It was one of the main reasons for developing a digital medium.
I like the look of these: http://machinadynamica.com/machina31.htm. Not!

Well yes. There is plenty on line about it if you want it 'fully technical' ';)
The optical drives on a typical PC have no problem reading much bigger data files and they never put the comma in the wrong place, and they are built to the lowest possible cost.
