Hello!

I'm Geoff, from Margate, Kent.

Just joined up to pickup some tips and that, really. I make music and have a little all analogue (apart from my sampler!) bedroom studio. I'm a child/teen of the 90s so grew up with cassetttes and have got back into vinyl (after ruining all my dad's stuff back in the 80s!) recently when I started sampling from charity shop vinyl finds.

My set up? Currently just a Technics SL3200 and Tascam 122 cassette deck, not including my recording gear, at the moment. I have some old DBX companders that were made for stereo systems...but I use those as compressors in my recording! As I say, as I get drawn more and more back to the analogue world, I'm starting to think more about getting a 'proper bo' listening system, so am here to see what's what for my budget!

Also, I'll be looking for recommendations for what the best cartridge one can get for around £80? Any suggestions?

The rest of my system...well, I haven't strictly got one yet! My TT and 122 are currently running through my studio system, straight into my powered monitors (JBL LSR305s). I realise, however, that studio monitors for mixing are purposefully designed to be as flat, unflattering and honest as possible, so not neccesarily the best for music enjoyment, so I will be looking at getting a proper amp and speaker set up for such purposes. The one thing I've learned so far with Hi-Fi equipment is the sky's pretty much much the limit on how much you want to spend, so it'll all be budget-defined, I guess! I imagine, just as with my musical equipment and instruments, I'll be drawn to stuff from the late 70s/early 80s, which is probably a good era to buy stuff from at the moment, price/quality ratio-wise, anyway. Plus I just luuuuuurrrrrrve wood side panels on my equipment! I'm always looking out for early 80s Tascam/DBX/Akai stuff!

Music wise - a bit of everything! But not in a Heart FM listener way! My cassettes are mostly what I listened to as a whipper snapper (90s alternative rock, rave, Doors/Hendrix etc) plus a few rarer pieces like Loveless by My Bloody Valentine and Closer by Joy Division. Records, more likely early 00's canadian post-rock. But, yes, a bit of everything. I'm a big Beatles and Radiohead fan (looking forward to the vinyl release of their latest, which includes a piece of 1/2" master tape from their actual masters, as a keep sake!) plus a bit of jazz, dub reggae (and only dub really/strangely), funk, soul etc. For the music I make, I sample funk breakbeats, chop them up in the sampler and layer with various atmostpheric bits and pieces found on charity shop and bargain bin finds. I plan to self-release a cassette later in the year, so watch this space!

Oh, and I've just realised that some my studio stuff might count too! I have a Teac A3340S 4-track reel to reel (I'm looking to upgrade to a Teac 80-8...anybody?) and am currently looking for a good 2 track, 15ips mixdown deck (an A3300SX 2T would go rather nicely, I think!). Tascam M208 mixer. DBX 117 and 119. Roland RE-201 Space Echo. I also have the "Rolls Royce" of cassette multi-trackers, the Akai MG614!

Oh yes. Studio stuff counts, as does all audio.

Hmm. Cassettes, I seem to remember them from the dim and distant past...................... Joking! :D
