Anyone done this with their whole collection... And how long did it take you

Ive decided to make a concerted effort to get my lps at least cattalogued but it is a slow job.... Only managed 40 so far.. Tis interesting to se values mind, and how many different issues there has been.

Yup, 497 items catalogued (just my vinyl - not bothered about CDs) I think I still need to do my comps in with it, but all original albums are in there - took me a couple of days when I was signed off sick from work. Best thing about it is now that I have a sensible way of recording what I've cleaned and when. It's also useful when you're out crate digging and want to check if you've already got something.

The search is pretty good at just straight catalogue numbers, which speeds up the process of finding the right archive.

So... what are you doing with Discogs? I thought at first you were selling them on there... (I'm sure "Discogs" is not a verb? :) )

If you have an appropriately equipped smart phone, download a barscanner app and the discog app.

Then you can scan the barcode (using the app via your phone's camera), upload and paste to your collection. Of course it only applies to records pressed in the 80's and onwards.

Yes it's becoming easier as I go on. Ice added a few releases too that were not in database

As for barcodes. Not so many have them but it's a good point
I mostly put record no to start with

Was reading up on that recently... Not got money or room for more unless I get some offloaded lol

was initially seeing if you could make your list public but not sure you can yet, although you can export without pics i think

Been doing this myself this week. IM about half way through the albums for now, will finish them off and catalogue the 12" and E.P's afterwards. Wont bother with CDs probably although as they will all have barcodes on them i may do just for completeness sake.

Interesting selecting the right releases though. On some of them ive had to find the right release via the etching in the vinyls runout. For example i always thought i had an original Unknown Pleasures from Joy Division but turns out its the re-issue just after.

The only thing i dont like about the wants list is when you locate a copy it does not remove it from the wants list

I use an App called "Milkcrate" that scans a barcode or you can input cat number on iPhone or iPad.....Then it links to Discogs databases and stores your collection - it's very easy.....about 500 loaded so far, only 5,000 or so to go....maybe a job if I ever retire.

Doesn't it say everything on the sleeves already? :) I'm not getting it yet - sounds like a lot of effort for something when the records are there on the shelves. Unless you're digitising everything and filling in the things for each file?

No your not are you? :). When youve got hundreds of records you start to forget what you have, what issue it is, what condition its in and how much it may be worth. Just a few possibles. You have a easy to manage list in pour pocket you can access anytime.
You may be at a bootsale and woner if you have that one and find out quickly. You want to sell it then all the info etc is there whithout hunting for it ...
I sometimes forget some of the stuff ive got as it was bought in many cases many years ago.

Anyway i am up to 130+ now... Money is mounting up too. Lol

Interesting. People keep asking me what I'm going to do when I retire in a couple of weeks time ... now I have an answer :D

BTW, are those values actually achievable in the real world? Everytime I have ever taken LPs to dealers, they seem to think they are worthless

struth

Not likely with dealers.. They are thieves lol..." They discogs, give you min, median and high over last 10 sales so yes they are achievable depending on condition and to an extent how many want to how many available etc

The selling area is no different to many online secondhand book websites - nothing special. There is no auctioning or price discovery, only people's adverts for music they are selling.

The same thing exists on small ads online, ebay etc etc etc just that this one is off the back of a user-generated database of as many musical releases as people can find to list.

Values are pretty hard to work out. If you look for a record, you will have a couple of chancers selling a VG+ record for £30 and then a several private sellers with the exact same record in VG+ for £4. Likely the £30 ones never sell but people will go "oh, it's worth £30 ! ".

I've read the words and nope, I'm still not relating to why one would want that or go through the effort to get it. I can see the thing of considering your records as assets and getting some feeling from totting up what they're worth, but again that's not something I can relate to wanting to do (hifi maybe, but not music). Make a section of doubles if you end up with two of something and sell them at your leisure.

I have found it useful and saved a few quid in not buying a second copy of something. My memory is useless and just thinking about and or remembering what I have on CD is a headache
Hardly put any of my collection on there 257 so far. One thing I have used it for is to catalogue records by one composer so I can get a handle on what I have when looking to get some more.

My collection is in three different rooms in my house most of my non classical CDs in storage boxes. Vinyl shelves hidden behind boxes TT isnt plugged in, also a couple of hundred CDs at my Mums old house in another city.

Soometimes just a good place to look at whats on a record without having to actually look at the record also some records just dont have information on them that i can read

Ive got a dashboard etc. Dont really use the app as its crap. Better using full site on ipad I find or pc. Sure I paid nowt, just signed up, although it was a number of years ago. May have charged now. I buy stuff and have got about 40% of my records done. Selling is I think 8% as fee plus 20% of fee in vat, so about 10% all told. If I did pay it would have been very minimal, or wouldnt have bothered at time, as I didnt really fancy it much at time.

Haven't done it, probably should but at the end of the day value is a relative thing, it ebbs and flows and something is really only worth what another will pay. I have over a thousand lps, most I suspect have no massive value, a few might have, but to be honest it all smacks of too much hard work and I don't feel motivated to do it. That might change, never say never.

Wish you all the best with it Grant.

I'm unsure about the prices to be honest. Not bothered about that stat much (if at all) but I got up to 100 last night and just now clicked the value thingie.

I've got a price of £957 minimum / £1707 median / £3399 maximum. Really??? I certainly haven't paid anything like that.

Scary stuff if it's right.

ah... well. That might explain it as all my LP's are sealed. I just look at them and then put them away in handmade sexy silk slips. :eyebrows:

Bet someone in the world does that.

One thing is that I've got a ropey copy of The Beatles White Album, with one disc missing so I've graded it accordingly yet it still comes up with about £60! - bonkers.. lol

Thats the price for a full set. It doesnt really compensate for those things..you have to do that yourself. Your high is better than mine and ive done nearly twice as many. Minecare mostly top end condition as i keep mine in lucite :D

Mind you ive lots that have never been sold before and quite a few of them i had to add... So guess i could add a third to totals easily.

Apparently not, as she's never played them either.

Just do a few a day til you get bored. Some days i do a dozen some noe or a couple.. 218 done. A lot i had to add to catalogue as they were not listed. Ive a lot of rarities, and in super nick for age, although not perhaps as valuable as they should be. Blues stuff is not always high in folks mind yet its where it all began really.

Yeah, I'll nibble my way through the box upstairs at some point. I don't have many anymore to be honest, about another 50. I sold a lot a while back as we needed the room etc.

I agree, Blues and classical LP's are crazy prices, worth much, much more IMO. I've got a lovely copy of Semprini from 1957, it's mint and only ever played by me I think. A beautiful pressing in every way... Median worth, £6.50. Bonkers.

struth
25-06-2016, 12:26
Think its worth doing as you then have a list of what is there and its condition. Prices are a bonus. I,m up to 260 done now so not so many left now.

Just about 300 done now and only a few left... I have had to add dozens of releases or would have been finished long ago, but it will help others perhaps. Probably 25% or so have never been sold/ listed so my prices are obviously down quite a bit but its high of about £5k looks to be about it. Guess you could add 25% to that but inclined to say the missing ones will take up the slack. So happy for it to be about say 4/5 grand in total. As ive sold a few hundred its not too bad i guess.

Resurrecting an old thread as just added my collection - took around 4 days but enjoyed it.
Still a few more to do so almost there (some 78's I have don't show...)
Just short of 500 (feels like I had more than that) with a value of between £3k and £10k depending on the condition etc.

A few surprises in the values as I bought a Talk Talk EP for £1.50 a few years back from a second hand store and now worth between £62 and £177......... (not that I would sell - honest)

This is something I'll have to do, but baulk at the sheer time it'll take. Also, it's not just finding the album, but which issue/reissue and stamping info., which can affect a price (not that Discogs would help here).

Something which hasn't been mentioned is insurance. If you can catalogue (and photograph), you have a pretty good record and valuation in the event of a claim.

There's another sire, Popsike, which does similar things to Discogs, but may be less accessible for cataloguing purposes.

Found I have around 5 doubles so not to bad.
I found it therapeutic going through the albums and singles as I pulled some to one side to have another listen.
A few years back I played every one from start to finish - took many months - and you soon realise how your musical tastes do change over the years!!

To that point, taking a bunch of photos of what's in your shelves / crates is worthwhile.

In addition, as someone who has inadvertently bought duplicates, I've found it handy to be able to check the photos on my mobile when I'm a record shop and about to pull the trigger.

Fine if you've got a mobile; I haven't, but as the vast majority of records I've bought have come from charity shops, inadvertent duplicates come cheaply.

Loaded mine onto Discogs last year...bit of a ball-ache, but worth it in the end. Easy now to add to it as I make purchases.

I'm pitching my hoard's value somewhere between the median (£8.5k) and the top end (£15k), somewhere around £12k. Feels about right.

One thing to consider if you're insuring your vinyl is factoring in postage costs in the event of your collection being destroyed. Multiply your item count by £4-£4.50 (which is what I seem to be paying at the moment for domestic shipments) and include that in your estimation of your collection's value.

Replacing a collection of, say, 500 records (assuming you buy each one from different sellers) will cost you £2250 in postage alone.

Ouch - I think I will need to take some pictures soon and save them in the Cloud as no good keeping the pictures on the phone/camera/laptop etc - if they get burned then nothing to prove etc....

Don't know about you, but if I lost even part of my 1250+ collection, I certainly wouldn't expect to replace them all, even if I could. The insurance companies wouldn't entertain consequential loss (i.e. postage) anyway. The sheer hassles of trying to source duplicates IN THE SAME CONDITION from Ebay, Discogs, Popsike or wherever doesn't bear thinking about.

If I were to loose my record collection to fire or theft, it would be like a loss in the family! Like your 20 year old dog died! Insurance could lessen the blow, but it would be a real chore to even attempt to replace them. If a flood came and I had to leave suddenly, my records and photos would be the only items I would pack, all else can be replaced.

I’ve made my son in law promise he will take possession of my collection, and stereo. He tells me it’s morbid, but he has promised to keep the Records and not sell them. By the way he does like my kind of music. He can sell the stereo, to help pay to plant me in the ground. Or keep it and bury me in the woods?
