Just been listening to Judee Sill's eponymous album on a vinyl reissue and thought I should mention her here...
For those not familiar with her work, Sill was one of the first signings to David Geffen's Asylum record label in the early 70s. She was cited along with Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt and others, although her songs are far removed from her contemporaries in their subject matter and style.
Her two album career (Judee Sill in '72 and Heart Food in '73) was cut short by her disillusion with the music industry. Her rebellious 'wild' side caused a sad descent into drugs and prostitution that led, eventually, to her death in 79 - unnoticed by many who had been close to her, with some of her closest friends only finding out years later. But what a pair of albums - some of the most interesting material of the era IMHO, blending the west-coast folky sound with some seriously complex songwriting. Sill was heavily influenced by classical composers, especially Bach, and it shows in her songs. Check out her stuff on Spotify if you can, but here's a taster...
