Mr Liang 845

I have one of these 845 amps gathering dust after I got fed up with it. I wanted to modify/rebuild it but a series of injuries followed by much surgery meant I couldnt even lift the bloody thing let alone mess with it. Anyway I'm fit enough now to consider the options. The easy one is to replace the small input tubes with 6AC7 replace the driver tube with EL34/5881/KT66 and change the cathode resistor. Then it's replace the rubbish coupling caps for something better. The other option is the Lampizator mods. I've had a trawl around his site and checked out his mods to this amp but there is another there which I found more appealing and that was a circuit diagram provided by a Dietmar Gerlund. It replaces the whole of the input/driver board with a hard wired circuit using four 6SN7s I think. This floats my boat. I know someone here has done the first option but I don't know if he went any further and any comments from anyone would be appreciated. I'll get a link posted to the Lampizator 845. I'm not much cop multitasking on my ipad I'm afraid. There is another option I suppose, I could always get rid of the damned thing but where's the fun in that?

I know Nick has changed one to a triode front end in the past, don't know what circuit he used though.

I also recall one being changed to GM70, which was said to be better. Needs extra transformers for the filaments obviously, which I think were mounted on the rear of the chassis.

It's all down to cost tbh Ali and I do have pretty much everything I need to do Dietmars triode front end. I've never come across anyone who's done it though. Maybe I just need to stop pussying around and get on with it.

You need to do something with it Ralph as its not sounding too good at the moment, I was quite alarmed when I heard that distortion at higher volume, but could never remember it on others I had heard previously.
