I use the P77 on my Linn.
Replacement styli are like the proverbial rocking horse stuff .. Decent MM though.

The A&R cartridges used a common body with different styli from simple conical C77, elliptical E77 to the P77 parabolic. The P77 got good reviews back in the 80s. Since then, some have been less than enamoured with it over time. The P77 forms the basis of the Garrott P77i, which is excellent. You might wish to read Rauliregas very long thread on Audiogon - over 20 million reads and 240 pages!

I have used the P77i recently and it is very good indeed. You can get new P77 styli from Expert Stylus Company, who made them originally for A&R. I bought one earlier this year for £75 inc P&P - bargain.

Of course, it could be one of the A&R metal bodies MC's. They are nice sounding carts :)

I had one new many years ago and found it pretty good but ultimately a bit rounded and over warm. It was a fave rave of the mags at the time, probably mid '80's IIRC, and about £48 new then, again IIRC

P77's pretty awesome?
My first cart with Rega P2 when I still quaified for a Bursary....did the business for me for over 15 years.

Goldring 42 was a simdge better, but may have been "new cart" syndrome, as when my AT110 sounded better than my AT95e...until I actually sat down and listened?

Word..Yo.

A bit more info about the Garrott P77. You can buy a new Garrott P77i for Aus 600 (i.e. £300) - bargain really.

A&R P77 was a great MM of its day and worthy of use today if you can find a replacement stylus !

Expert Stylus made the original styli for the P77. They will make you a brand new one for £75 inc P&P (I bought one earlier this year)

My recently retrieved LP 12 had an original P77 fitted in good visual condition, probably 15 years old. Sounded dull and slow when replaced by Rega Carbon.

Age may be the culprit though!

I had the E77mg - it was okay IIRC and better than the Linn K9 it replaced but that was a long time ago now. I had a Nag MP30 after that which was better again.

There was also the uber rare P78 - had a brown stylus carrier. I know ESC made some of the styli but I remember reading back in the day that the P78 stylus was down to a single guy in Japan and when he stopped working no more P78 styli. Now this may be a load of horse poo but it makes for a good story. I had a P78 on my old Pioneer PL12D and later an RP3 from memory sounded more detailed and musical than the P77

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I once had a P77 but ultimately found it too warm, rounded etc for my tastes... same reasons I don't go overboard about DL103 or SPU etc... I lake a CD like sound from my cartridges... but without the digital "edge" and lack of front to back depth in the sound staging of course!

I've got an almost new P77mg (less than 10 hours) boxed up here. Really should get round to using it on something.
