Whilst I was out tackling the garden/jungle this afternoon, Windows 10 was installed on my Windows 7 laptop. I didn't want it and didn't need it but now it's there. So far, it is pretty much all the same as before but then I don't do much more than post on forums and do a bit of e-mailing.

The layout is slightly different but all is good, so far. Is this the calm before the storm ?

It put me on a countdown yesterday and today it tried to install so I just switched off.

I don't know if it will screw up my computer or not, but the way I see it is: why take a chance?

Its a sad state of affairs when folk are having to switch off there pcs to stop there pcs being taken over. Go for a cuppa and find a new operating system has just appeared etc....
Glad i wiped mine and went linux

Aye, it waited until I was in the kitchen unpacking the shopping. The crafty bastard. Already 5% done when I came back in and caught it.

It's a bit like Invasion Of The Body Snatchers isn't it?

A little longer and your features would have been on the screen

Too late for Dave though. His computer looks and sounds the same. But it is no longer his computer...

yes its new identity is a federal one. If it grows legs and pisses off to Australia, then you will likely lose your tablet and mobile phone once its settled ;)

Or it will become part of Skynet and overthrow mankind.

Well Dave, had you got in touch with an old pal who's been there and done it several times recently ;) (installed Windows 10 I mean :D) I could have told you that you can delay installation, or even remove the 'Windows Update' file that causes the upgrade to happen... For 30 days, I believe you can revert back if you want to.

Both my PC's run '10' and one upgraded from '7' with no issues at all. My wife has only this week updated her laptop as after a complete re-format and fresh install on Windows 7, it refused to update for a fortnight (not left on for four days 24/7 as recommended elsewhere) and then started to update all by itself. In fear of Win7 being terminated early, we allowed the 10 update to happen and after a couple of days complaining about the start menu screen stuffed with 'stuff' she didn't want (easily removed) and the (necessary?) install of 'Shut Up 10,' peace currently reigns again...

Can you expand on this please ?

Windows have tried this on me too, but I managed to stop them. I am happy with windows 7 so don't want to update. Thing is I don't think its possible to stop these attempts at assimilation, its my understanding that while one could deactivate the upgrade, one can no longer, that windows updates will detect this and switch it back on. Is that true ?

I'm only qualified to comment on the similarity between this and Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. I've no technological knowledge and I'm not a Doctor.

Windows 10 is fucking great. Just bow down to the lizard overlords and allow it into your life.

Macca

Maybe your right. I've been thinking of giving the alien overlords a go for a while now. They have fresh ideas.

I've been worried for months about 10 being installed but now it's here, it's hardly any different. The screen isn't littered with boxes, as I've seen on display computers at John Lewis, just a different welcome screen, a few different logos and the 'off' button hidden away.

Maybe I'm missing something ?

It probably is fine for folk like you and me but you know what these computer-geek types are like. They get upset by stuff I don't even understand.

They should have stopped with XP Pro. Everyone liked that so why cock about with it?

OK. Glad it's not just me then.

I was expecting W10 to be very different to 7 but it's pretty much the same.

I was happy with the DOS command line. Just got the hang of that and Windows came out. XP was the best, no question. Best e-mail version too. Have to use Outlook 2010 at work and that really is the worst piece of crap ever.

Want to put your 'out of office' on? Now logically, where would that be? Oh yes, in the 'File' menu. Of course. Not under 'Home' or 'Tools' or anywhere that might make sense.

Either they made it difficult on purpose or fuck-wittedness has reached new heights in California. Not sure which.

Xp pro was good although quite heavy on resourses after a time like most windows products... Vista became so bloated to crawled... 7 ultimate is my fav... Works great even on a vista machine. Linux is better but still lots of stuff doesnt work on it yet. Macs great but too damned expensive for poor folk like me

10 may be good especially on a new machine but can be a disaster on older ones... Alas anything a company insists i take even when i say i dont want it has to have something wrong for me in it and something right for others in it.

I use 7 at home with all the fancy-pants crap switched off. Who cares what their desktop looks like, seriously? Bloody tragic if you ask me.

What fancy stuff... Never noticed any! Lol

With win8 i reverted it to normal decktop pretty much straight away as i didnt want the tiles. Never used them after an initial test... Think there was several updates pending on mine for years.
It was a risk deleting my whole operating system, but it worked out ok, and dont have microsoft doing things to the pc without my permission. Their excuse that it was in the licence of using the thing is rediculous and i would have liked it challenged in court. It should be pointed out at point of sale that they reserve the right to do anything they like to your pc...

Windows 8 was a disaster. I bought a Sony laptop with 8 installed, for my Wife and it gave her constant trouble and had some bug (Kernel something) which couldn't be got rid of. In the end, I couldn't stand the anguish it was causing her and splashed out on a Macbook. End of problems and a very happy Wife - it is so easy to use and completely trouble free.

The trick with the Sony laptops and W8 is that most of them work better with 8.1. The only exception that I know of is the Pro 13. That one seems to mess up its touch screen drivers when you update to 8.1.
I am a big fan of the Sony Vaio range, having got my first one around 1999. I ended up getting a Sony for all five of us in the family.

When my Wife was having trouble with W8, it was just as W8.1 was being introduced and everything I read on the www was that it was a disaster, so we jumped ship to Apple.
To be honest, the Macbook is a delight to use, so it was fortunate that W8 was a disaster.

The W8 Sony is with our Daughter, so I guess it has been upgraded to W8.1, as she is enjoying it.

+1. I have a 17" Vaio and it's been a great machine. Went from 7 to 10 with no problems, still runs like a dream.

Real shame Sony have stopped making PC's.

Yes they sold it as it was a struggle to keep going... Vaio corp have started selling in us again as a high end brand so they may make a comeback. Dunno how much of Sonys old knowledge will be in new ones though.
