my young daughter wanted a really simple system, but to also play very loud and have a nice amount of bass:gig:

she has been using headphones up till now, and listening to all her MP3's on her iPod Touch, when she docked the iPod on my Onkyo ND-S1 a few weeks back she loved it, and bought one off ebay, they generally sell for around £30 to £40, they are an amazing bargain when compared to the Wadia and other digital docks !

she also has lots of music on her laptop, and now connects the optical out on her laptop to the Onkyo which sounds unbelievably pretty good on her old Logitech Z2300 amp with two satellite speakers made by KEF model HTS 1001, whilst this is more than pleasant for lower listening levels, she wanted something beefier for when entertaining friends, more along the lines of my stereo system

so I gave her some Yamaha NS-300 speakers and Yamaha DSP A3090 amp ( both from around circa 2000 )

I had a nice coaxial 1mt cable to connect the Onkyo to the Yamaha amp, and cranked the volume knob to 16db ( which is about 12 o'clock ) , the knob starts at -80db all the way round to 0db, when we started to go much louder it was really noticeable that some tracks sounded much better than others

I asked her to rip a few of her favourite CD's to 320kbps MP3 files, and we found that we could now go much louder, and the MP3's sounded as good as playing the original CD's in my system, well maybe not quite, but I struggled to pick out any differences, so that was quite a revelation to my ears

she is over the moon, and I must say I am pretty impressed as well that such a powerful rocking sound can be had for peanuts these days

Excellent stuff, Peter. You're to be applauded for keeping our hobby alive! I'm sure she'll get many hours of happy music listening from that little system

thanks Marco

she is using WinLame to rip CD's to MP3's, she uses the setting V1 ( VBR 225kbs) , and getting very
good SQ, in fact really good, I am duly impressed :-)

and she bought Copytrans the other day, as she now has two iPod 5th Gens ( 80GB and 30GB disks ) , it is a
very swish Windows program for $30 USD, and lets her do all sorts of backup, moving of files around between
various Apple devices, including her iPhone

So far as kid's systems are concerned, son no. 2 cost me £129. A pair of Alexsis active speakers (£99 cables included), a Chromecast (£30) and Spotify. Happy as Larry with it for the last 6 months. Also good for parties.
