I'd say that if the package was sufficiently non-rigid to enable a postie to bend it in half, then maybe the sender was at least partly to blame. Any records I've had through the post have been packaged in non-bendable material.
Even a relatively thin record is extremely resistant to being bent in 2 to facilitate going through a letterbox. It would have required a lot of effort and been obvious to almost anyone that the package was not intended to be bent in 2. Obviously the person failed to realise this...or he was a digital lover;)

True and i found it too... Not that that was the point Shane. It was i think his following abuse that was the point i think. Hiding a message is fine and clever, but if one doesnt use the reply and quote and reread the post then you wont get it.
Indeed, on both counts, especially as I didn't use the reply with quote option, and so hadn't the foggiest what he was on about.
The insertion of a ;) smiley at the end of his original post would've gotten the point across much quicker, but Richard wanted to be clever, and then I'm blamed for not getting it immediately and subsequently called a racist :rolleyes:

Back in the eighties it was quite common for music/entertainment magazines to send out "samplers", very very shallow pressed plastic film that actually was both foldable and playable on your average turntable. Did these surface in other countries as well?

I often get them just thrown over the gate, fragile and signed for. And it's a high gate.
I have a friend who is a postman, and he tells me that since the sell off the pressure on them to be quicker and just deliver anywhere (ie signed valuable stuff to unknown neighbours etc) is huge, their walks have become a lot larger, new staff are not trained so well etc.
I was only half kidding about blaming it on George...

Post staff dont do that here... A signed for that has no permissions to deliver elsewhere will go back to the sort office. Non signed for may be left at a neighbour... Nothing is flung or dumped at your door... Anyone doing that here would likely have it inserted in there letterbox.;)

I had a package of about 10 records slung over my 7 foot side gate by Collect plus - didn't smash the records but damaged the corner of the covers of all. Yodel (same company I think) have also thrown a printer over this gate. I won't use them.

To a postman, 'fragile' means 'throw underarm'.
The 'fragile' stickers always puzzle me. Parcels marked fragile are not treated any differently from those that do not have such markings (unless some unscrupulous operative decides to regard the fragile sticker as a challenge) so I don't really understand why anyone bothers with them.
It is a bit like the 'baby on board' sticker in car windows. What does this actually mean? 'Please don't intentionally ram my vehicle' ?
If it is fragile then it is best to pack it better, rather than waste time and money on stickers.
A few executions might concentrate their minds a bit:D. The Han dynesty had a way with them ;)

It was originally a message to the emergency services that if they came upon the vehicle in a accident to look for a baby in the vehicle. Its use is now lost as few seems to know what its for (as you proved), and leave them in the car at all times.

I had something similar - parcel thrown over my side fence (also by Yodel), landing up behind my shed. Ended up having to fish it out from a step ladder using a hook on broom stick. Luckily it was shoes not records.
Problem is, these delivery companies use self employed drivers who are paid by the number of deliveries. If they leave a card and have to come back they don't get paid a second time...

And then some customers have the cheek to ask me why I charge so much for delivery, which is a lot more than Yodel etc. quote their customers. I feel far happier to use a more expensive service that will try to deliver before 1:00PM, not 10:00PM. And they are happy to leave a card and offer you a chance to have the parcel redelivered, or get you to pick it up from a convenient local pick up point. These things cost money, but offer both the seller and buyer a larger degree of peace of mind.

Same here in Wales. If we're not in to sign for something, or a package is too big to go safely through the letter box, stuff is always left with neighbours or in the out house. Thank goodness we live in a civilised area, away from the headless chicken/rat-race, selfish hellhole that is London!! :exactly:

At the end of the day, regardless of what was written on the outside of the package, common sense should dictate that you don't try to fold something in half that is way too big to safely go through a letter box [the clue is there in the word 'letter', as in letters only, not parcels :rolleyes:], especially when the contents have quite clearly been packaged in such a way as to remain flat!!
Doing so is almost certainly going to damage the contents inside, which of course is precisely what happened. Therefore, the postman concerned was a lazy, brainless twit, and deserves to be suitably reprimanded. I also don't buy the nonsense that postmen are forced to cut corners because of time schedules...
At the end of the day, the job should be done properly, as that's what we (the customers) are paying for, with goods arriving in the same condition as they were sent - so whatever is required to facilitate that process to the highest possible standard, should happen. End of!
As Grant pointed out, if it can happen in Scotland and Wales (as in nearly 20 years of living in Wrexham, running a business and having all manner of things delivered through the post, I've never once had anything completely ruined, lobbed over my fence or squashed through my letterbox), it can also happen in England! :exactly:

Because quite simply, if that does exist, it shouldn't be allowed to impinge on the quality of the service customers receive from the Royal Mail, to the extent that cartoon-comedy errors of judgement occur, such as you've linked to on this thread - and if it does happen, steps should be taken so that such things never occur again in future, or are minimised as far as humanly possible.
Basically, a job should be done properly or not at all. I can't abide laziness, incompetence or lack of professionalism/couldn't care less attitude from any organisation.
Personally, I'd like to know what happened to the postman concerned, in terms of the punishment he received for his rampant stupidity, but I doubt we'll ever know!

That was my immediate thought.
To summarise from information that has been posted online:
A digital online marketing strategist ordered a vinyl record to be delivered to her home address even though she was out at work.
The company that despatched the record put it in plastic bag of the type used to package clothes instead of a rigid box and posted it Royal Mail by a not signed for service.
Somewhere in the postal system it was folded in half, could be the postman delivering it or could be in a sorting office.
The receiver of the package goes on a twitter rant instead of contacting the seller about the problem and the flimsy packaging.
Looking at the twitter comments Royal Mail are compensating the receiver which suggest the seller has not been at all helpful in resolving the issue, the seller should send a replacement at their cost and then the seller should claim off royal mail, not the buyer.
The buyer has done nothing wrong so they don't need to be spend time claiming from Royal Mail.
When these kind of problems happen to me with a delivery I contact the seller and ask them to send another that is more securely packaged and that is then the end of it, it's no big deal.

The postal worker that folded is of course at fault for folding it instead of taking it back to the depot but making things harder to damage might have avoided the temptation to fold it.

As Grant says, you cant fold a record of any thickness easily. He would have felt the resistance as he did it - absolutely arrogant and gormless behaviour with a total disregard for someone else's property ! :rolleyes:
