Denon 301 Mk2

Having read about Jimbo's experiences with a Denon 301 Mk2 I purchased this low hours version from Mikeyb about a month ago to see what all the fuss is about.

I have since put about 25-30 hours on it and have experimented with different loadings and can confirm it is a very nice sounding cartridge indeed. However, and perhaps not surprisingly, in the context of my system I still prefer my £1k Lyra Delos.

It is as you say John very good for the money and gets probably 80% of the way to £1000+ MC cartridges.

Hi John,

Once you sell the 301, which is undoubtedly a fine cartridge, I'd urge you to try and obtain a Denon DL-S1, as that will get you 100% of the way to £1000+ cartridges, but only cost you £500! ;)

Hi, I'd be interested if it's still available?
Do you think it'd suit a stock 1200MK2 tone arm and headshell?

My TT came last week with Stanton 500mkii with D5100 AL-II stylus with an unknown lifespan.
I'm hoping the 301 should better that?

I'm no expert on Denon cartridges but there is much info over on the Analogue Art section originally posted by Jimbo.

Marco is very knowledgeable about Denon cartridges and may make an informed comment later?

It looks as though David (Woodhead) may not have phono boards fitted to his amplifier and therefore be unable to play his turntable at all. I've pointed him in the direction of Firebottle's current MM/MC phono stage and to the loan unit currently doing the rounds.

The cartridge is therefore still available for sale.

Can anyone suggest a headshell that suits the 301 on stock 1200 tonearm please?

Currently just got the original headshell.

Try the standard headshell with a half inch blob of BluTak on top to start with. That should work as a temporary measure.

I'm selling an AT MG10 which would would be an improvement on the original Headshell. Others here will be able to confirm that or otherwise, I never got to try it as it didn't fit the captive threads on my Zu Denon 103.
