Aliens and Sonic Booms in Yorkshire - Anyone hear them?

Only heard a sonic boom once. When I was a youngster, I was at RAF Leuchars watching a Lightning showing off. He flew in from about five miles away at about 500 feet and broke the sound barrier right over us, pulled the stick back and went vertical up into the clouds on afterburners. That was one hell of a spectacle. The bang apparently brought down the ceiling of an old girl's cottage a mile away.

I've seen a Typhoon crack one out at an air show when I was a kid...bloody loud.

Never seen an Alien (or have I?) but plenty of fellow goths in Whitby in the city of Yorkshire. lol

Avatar looks like Hotel Transylvania lol. Dont think ive heard one close up.. Sure ive heard it from a distance a few times. They are not suppose to do it for reasons Geoff gave etc.... And yes the English Electric Lightning is the coolest and best plane ever. Would love to havea trip in one

There was one in S Africa i think but may well be decommissioned. Now.....Brian Cox had a ride in it....straight up to 60000 ft in seconds. Its ceiling was classified

I have been in one :) RAF Binbrook 1990 whilst finishing my ATC. My 18th Birthday. My cousin knew a fighter pilot who got it cleared for me. It was a trainer jet and it was freakin' awsome.

Full throttle on those things were either ON or OFF.

I seem to remember they were starting to retire them off at the time but the trainer jet was still in use afterwards for some reason.

Slightly less than the F4 Phantom that superseded it in the RAF. The Lightning was supposed to have topped 80,000 feet in tests I believe and the Phantom somewhat more.

The sonic booms were explained on the local news here as 2 jets were scrambled to assist an air france flight which had lost comms and needed to be directed to the runway at Newcastle I think.
