Denon PMA - 250SE

Following a recent request for help i have acquired the above amp in perfect condition, i have connected it to the only speakers available (Q Acoustic2010) the problem i am having is that i am having to turn the volume knob almost to maximum to get a normal volume,and have almost no bass, i have tried the source direct option and can hear no difference, can you offer some advice/suggestions please

Check that the speakers have their links connected. Sounds like your driving tweeters

Are you using a turntable without employing a phono stage. I can't remember if the 250SE came with an internal one as standard. The symptoms you describe are like those from plugging a turntable into a line level input.

Please forgive my ignorance, i am plugging the turntable into the phone stage on the amp, the person i acquired it from had used it with a turntable previously with no problems, a full turn on the volume knob is just giving me a resonable volume level

If the has a phono stage their should be a sticker above the phone input? Did the last owner have a phono pre amplifier stage for it im guessing he did as many dont have them built in....

as above,the phono stage is an optional extra at the time of purchase.

no probs. ive had this type of speaker and some have links that can fall out or disengage without it being obvious as they are underneath. Had that myself once.

Good point about the pre amp, there is no sticker there, is it right that i still get sound when the volume knob is turned right up though, i will have to get touch with the previous owner, i am using a M75 EJ Typr 2

you will get something but not much, depending what cart your using.

if you connect the tt into another line socket and if level stays the same then thats your answer:eyebrows:

The Shure should drive a normal MM phono stage just fine. I think there may not be one in your amp and that the previous owner would have used a separate stage between the turntable and amp.

What you describe. Low output and bright sound are exactly what you'd expect under the circumstances.

I had this recently with my new NAD C 320BEE their was no phono stage and had to turn the volume right up i stopped straight away as it wasn't right. DO NOT USE YOURE PHONE STAGE THIS WAY....i guess you but a phono pre amp...many about and cheap enough....
