OK so Sue and I couldn't stay in the town centre any longer and have opted for a sub-urban lifestyle. We moved in fully a couple of days ago and set up the sound system without any kind of delay. Cables initially were Atlas Equator interconnects and NVA LS5 loudspeaker connects. The first image is of my favourite piece of kit; the Thorens TD160 B MkII.

The second image is of the electronics under the main table.

The third image shows one of the KEF Q500's, probably the second best stereo imaging speakers I have ever owned.

After the first listen, it became apparent that the sound wasn't as good as the old house so I changed the interconnects for my usual Atlas Hyper cables and the sound was transformed. The stereo effect is now immense and all encompassing not closed in and strangled. The treble is much more incisive, clear and focused. The bass is going to be much deeper and more extended because the room is now well over twenty feet long.

All in all, we are very happy with our new location and very happy with our latest sound. For the future I think I feel a better tonearm coming on, a new phono stage and a new and much better cartridge.

Shaun if you fancy a trip down one weekend I can arrange for you to hear the KEF blades and a VPI Prime.

James, I'll seriously keep that in mind. Can't do much of anything though until the promised July/August deadline comes up. I should have some cash after that.

My only problem with getting rid of the TD160 is that I upgraded it with the new maple plinth less than a year ago and it totally transformed the level of detail coming off the disc. Unless I can be majorly swayed into something costing thousands, it isn't going to happen. I have thought very seriously about the Thorens and I think it needs a new arm and cartridge with a damn good phono stage. Something like the latest Origin Live Silver or Zephyr and a Dynavector DV20L as I am familiar with its sound. Then a suitable Graham Slee phono stage.
