New arrival, a true vintage classic

More vintage kit arrived last night at Chateau Montesquieu, fresh from an expert refurb where it was fettled and re-voiced …

Bit of retro styling going on, was built in Kent in 1963, but harking back to a rather older design.

Quite minimalist in terms of features. Treble and midrange to die for, though the lack of size means bass extension isn’t quite what it might be.

Still it should be fit for purpose - not sure how it would hold up with rock music or even jazz, but perfect for baroque and (especially) renaissance music ….

A Neupert 'Silberman', built in Kent at the Feldberg workshops in the early 1960s. Lived for many years at the music department of Bath University.

I'm well impressed, the sound is very sweet indeed (if rather different from my old Zuckermann which was a much more powerful late baroque "italian" style one about eight foot long! - no room for that when we moved house).

Interestingly I'm not playing much Bach on it, mainly English early 17th century - just feels and sounds right for a bit of Gibbons / Bull Etc - Fitzwilliam Virginal Book is great fun, the Flemish and Italians next I have some Sweenlick and Froberger on the way.
